Lá Bealtaine shona daoibh! The first day of summer is finally here, and it's a belter! Despite 1,600 years of Christianity, Ireland's pagan traditions live on in many ways. Yellow flowers such as these were traditionally gathered for the home to keep the Good People at bay in the pagan tradition. Bealtaine was also a time of bonfires, with one tradition seeing people drive their cattle between two fires in order to keep them free of malign influences for another year. The last week of "The Céilí", a photography exhibition by Melanie Black and Geoff Greenham in Blue House Gallery, Schull. This exhibition is a celebration of the ceílí: the musicians, the instruments, the music, the dancers and the dance itself as both tradition and community event. Our photographs aim to show, in their stillness, the shape, colours and beauty of instruments before they are taken up and given life by the band. In contrast is the blur of movement and exhilaration which is the dance - an energetic whirl of intricate steps and formations following the melodies and beats of jigs, reels, polkas and waltzes, for hours at a time before the well-earned breather and catch up with friends old and new. We look forward to introducing you to these iconic pieces, starting with one of our all-time favourites: the Bunbeg chair by Crannac. Crannac was the first, and only, mid-century modern furniture manufactured in Ireland from 1962. Designed with the help of Arthur Edwards and designers from Scandinavia seconded to Irish companies through the ‘Nordic Programme’ (organised by the Kilkenny Design workshops), the Bunbeg is today a design classic. Made of afromosia, or African teak, imported from Ghana, and covered in Irish tweed, the Bunbeg is a testament to Irish-Scandinavian design collaboration, and a worthy icon of Irish product design.

I have finally admitted defeat in my efforts to have Hosta plants in pots by my back door. These had hardly started to produce leaves this year when the snail attacks started. To my mind this is earlier than usual and if other years are an indication I will soon have no leaves left. Piseoige Lá Bealtaine Bealtaine, celebrated on the first of May in Ireland, is deeply rooted in our tradition and folklore, marking the beginning of Irish summer and was one of the major festivals in the Gaelic calendar. The day is surrounded by a rich tapestry of customs and beliefs here in West Cork, many of which involve piseoige or superstitions. These were thought to influence luck, health, and in particular the prosperity of those farming the land. - In the morning before the sun rises, green branches such as sycamore are placed on the doors of houses to show the beginning of the summer. - Milk or its products or any farming produce should not be given to a neighbour on May-Day. - The fire in the house must not be lighted on Bealtaine, no light not even a match. However cattle were driven into the fields on this morning ‘idir dhá thine Bhealtaine’ between the embers of two fires in some parts of Ireland. - If butter is being made on this day, the people of the house must on no account allow anybody to assist them other than the occupants of the house. - Eggs must not be exchanged or sold on this day. - The soil should not be turned or reddened on May Day. - If you wash your face in the dew on May Day before sunrise you will not have any pimples or boils or any sort of rashes on your face or skin for the coming year. #bealtaine #mayday #westcork #westcorklife #irishfolklore
