What a brilliant capture of human emotions, the working of the mind, the biases, the self and its interests. Every actor is nuanced in their acting, including the kid with just seconds of screen time. The dialogue writing is superb, the conversations just flow. It is effortless, as if it’s my living space in which it is happening. Considering that it’s written by Anand Ekarshi, one person, it’s amazing how he has been able to get inside the thoughts of every person, affected by their insecurities, be it a man or a woman. I was checking myself with everyone’s reaction. We generally find that one person, the main character, gets the maximum screen time or has affect on the movie, so that of course goes to Zarin Shihab, Vinay Fortt… but in this movie everyone is hero in their own right. Every one has influenced the story one way or the other. They played a significant role in shaping it on screen. Watch it for superb acting by everyone and for looking inside your own self and searching for yourself.There are too many elements at play in this movie, the personal circumstances, the notion about chastity, the pride and honour, the insecurities, the greed, the revenge and hunger for power, the casualness of actions, the seriousness of the impact and many deeper nuances. RGV: Your past can never excite you. What you're going to do is the only thing which can excite you. RVS: No question about the present related to VYOOHAM (2024) *elaa ichhaa stroke-uh* I would happily watch a personal interview had it came out in a different time, but with the film due for release this week, I naturally expect majority of the interview to be about that film and in such cases, I'm personally not a fan of the interviews that prioritize artist over the art... the reason being, especially in case of RGV, there are enough of his personal pHiLoSoPhIcAl interviews on the net for "only RGV is living independently after India gained independence"-batch to fap to and so we don't need more of such is what I feel! RGV will always be perfect to interview because he might not take any offence whatever you ask him and when you have that luxury, you could easily trouble him into asking questions that would make him think for a moment and then answer but that's not what we get here because every answer of him is on autopilot to me and no wonder why he enjoyed the interview because he was already signed up for these repetitive answers all his life! Even Baradwaj Rangan goes very personal sometimes, but his skill lies in how he ties back those personal aspects to the instances of how they have been reflecting in that particular artist's work over time [best example is Baradwaj Rangan's recent interview with Manikandan where those personal questions in terms of love and insecurities are all related to his character in LOVER (2024) and as a result would seep into how he approached his role as an actor] and that is of prime interest to me more than anything because if not for the relation with art, I'd have never known the artist. Anyway, this is all IMO and @ramvenkatsrikar, please take this as a constructive feedback from someone who wants you to do well and become the first RVS in Telugu space but not the next BR necessarily! Me being this early morning fdfs guy and having stayed away from her for college then or work now, didn't get the right time and movie to fulfill her dream of watching some movie on the Prasads' big screen, but finally, I thought it's the right time with HANU-MAN (2024)... two things my mother asked during the show are - 1. "Uppena music ne vaadaara enti" when that "Poolamme pilla" song started playing in their childhood and I was like haha abbo baane gurthunde thamariki Uppena song situation because throughout my childhood, she used to not remember anything even from a movie we watched just yesterday and I used to be like enduku naanna amma ki 70 bokka em gurthundanappudu. 2. When the film enters Anjanadri for the first time with all those sweeping aerial drone shots and zooms, she asked me, "aa ooriloki alaa elthunnattundi ra, bhale undi, emantaaru deenni 3D ahh?" 😭😭 Coming back to the rewatch thoughts, liked the film a bit more than the first watch, especially in terms of how local most of the emotions, humour and situations are despite Prasanth borrowing a ton from the west and our own old films. For instance, "Avakaya Anjaneya" is a dream action block for any star hero on the lines of something like say a "Sittharala Sirapadu" and Teja Sajja is lucky to get it very early in his career... my mother enjoyed the hell out of it to the extent of happiness literally palpable on her face. I stress on emotion here because we are seeing big directors making empty films with big stars devoid of a basic connect-to-all emotion and then there's the sister-brother relationship that came out so beautifully at least for me... yes, there's some artificiality or over-the-top-ness to it at times either due to the dialogue or performances, but I love how it all came together in the final dabba scene that morning or the later aakhari snaanam scene where that shot is just preceded by Anjamma's snaanam/bath of Hanumanthu during his childhood... reminded my mother of her over-achieving younger brother unlike the under-achiever here. My mother was equally excited as she had watched the movie many times. And today, it is my favourite Mani Ratnam film. I can’t explain exactly why because yes I love Nayakan, Iruvar, Alaipayuthey, and even the latest Ponniyin Selvan but if people ask me the question - then I’d still say it’s this film. An exploration into the workings of an arranged marriage, the way it still functions. I love this movie for the way it explores Revathi’s fears and the way she deals with the horrors of her past while trying to reject/build a new relationship with her husband. On the other hand, there is a man (Mohan) trying to make this marriage work. But the circumstances are so he’s asked for a divorce as a gift and he then puts forth an interesting present - a choice. Ilaiyaraaja fills these scenes with impeccable score and songs. The movie is a special one - with singin’ in the rain, a Beatles song, filter coffee, wide-angle shot of Rajpath, Revathi at her absolute best, and some fun with a Sardaar. Watch it if you haven’t yet. I'm a huge beach person but I'm not that much of a travel-enthu (some have already asked me bro just for a PK re-release, you come all the way to Hyd no? - but the travel for movies is different haha) person as more than the place, the person with whom I'm spending at that place means the world to me no matter how much of a wonder is that place in the world. So recently, my mother came to Bengaluru for the first time and we wanted to cover some places among which Murudeshwar Lord Siva statue plus the beach was something I've been excited for so long and while I was also searching for other places to.visit there near Murudeshwar if time permits, in one article, I came across a beach named Anjarle or in general a couple of beaches at Gokarna that are said to glow at night due to the phytoplankton and that led me to further searching on what all beaches are there across the world that could glow like this at night and I came across this photo that I showed to my mother and said ahhh this is how I want to experience this glow with my girl beside me oneday - now the thing with mothers or maybe the thing with cruel sons like me is that I show such things and imagine the person to be my girl or future wife or whoever but forget about amma that makes her put a face like "pakkanunna puri akkarledu kaani ekkado unna aa chapathi moham..." and in this regard, apart from temples, my mother has always requested only one thing from me that to take her to Taj Mahal on a full moon night and in childhood, I used to be like ori nee yavva adhi lovers tho ellaali ra neetho kaadu and she used to be like 😒😏 Anyway, ippudu e paina sodhi anthaa endukante, there's this beach scene in HI NANNA (2023)... ***SPOILER ALERT*** [tbh this is a kind of story where nothing is there to spoil because it will mostly happen the same way you anticipate and it still works, at least for someone like me who stopped looking for perfect new stories per se long back and instead the emotion or feel of a moment is all it takes for me me remember a film and keep that film in mind/computer even for that one moment even if I'm running out of storage and 'Hi Nanna' is one such film to me] (contd in comments)
On Sunday, 26th November, I had the pleasure of listening to #RaniMukerji live for the third time in 2023. At the 54th International Film Festival of India, Goa ( #IFFIGoa), the actor engaged in a freewheeling conversation with eminent film critic #BaradwajRangan. One that ran for about 45 minutes, it was too crisp a session to discuss the actor’s stunningly versatile repertoire. Mukerji has had the variety, the box office power, and a time-tested sway with the viewers and the media. To give the moderator due credit, the questions were intelligent and meticulous enough to focus solely on the actor’s body of work. For a fact, we would know they were coming from an individual who understands the grammar of Indian cinema and its unique syntax of acting. The conversation – along with a bunch from the audience – made me realize how Mukerji’s filmography is far more diverse than any of her contemporaries and, arguably, her predecessors and successors in Bollywood’s mainstream realm. Rani Mukerji spoke at length on why she chose to do Hum Tum (2004). It was a story centered around a woman who does not allow a night of lovemaking to change the course of her life. #KunalKohli’s film was a critical and commercial success and its progressive subject feels fresh to date. Speaking of progressiveness, Mukerji cheekily quoted how there were many divorces post Karan Johar’s extramarital drama #KabhiAlvidaNaaKehna (2006) – a multi-superstar vehicle that made a generation and their parents squirm in their seats for speaking certain unpleasant truths.
