Dev Patel begins his directorial debut by placing himself as the leading actor in this one man army revenge story in the mould of film characters such as ‘John Wick’. However, despite taking a different cultural approach and a more harrowing backstory, ‘Monkey Man’ fails to match the levels of similar lone wolf predecessors. Unlike ‘John Wick’ and similar films where the context of the plot is laid to us before the action kicks in, here the story is allowed to run without any knowledge of why Kid (Dev Patel) is seeking such revenge. Eventually throughout the story it becomes uncovered as to why through snippets of flashbacks that reveal more and more that ultimately justify the pain you can see administered through the well performed Patel’s eyes. Nonetheless, I found this was detrimental to the movie, it’s always good to see something different but here I found it hard to root for the protagonist in the first act. The context of the revenge is so powerful that if revealed earlier would have had me zoned in way more than I was. Also the film had a strange tone at times as naturally it has dark and gritty moments but also thanks in part to Alphonso (Pitabhash Tripathi) there was plenty of comedy, while the comedy was quite entertaining it created a confusing overall tone at times. On the flip side of this Dev Patel offers a committed performance while also directing a film that offers something slightly different to the genre it lies in, strong fight sequences and good editing. Overall, this film was not for me but it's not a bad film by any imagination. Despite a well rounded performance from Patel in acting and directing I was unable to invest in the story as much as the alternative army of one movie characters partly due to the slow release of the contextual background here. Final Movie of my Obscure Arnie Triple Feature: Bogged down by some bad 90s CG, a weak screenplay with some terrible one-liners, and not enough James Cromwell, Eraser (1996) isn't great but it has its moments. The rail gun stuff is cool, James Caan seemed to be awake and into this performance (not always the case at this point in his career), and the final act is a lot of fun with Arnie and his mafia backup saving the day. 2nd movie of my Obscure Arnie Triple Feature: I had to finally watch Conan the Destroyer (1984) because I absolutely love Conan the Barbarian (1982) as an operatic feast for the eyes and ears with so little dialogue there might as well not be any, I love it as a bizarre fever dream that's basically the fantasy version of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), and I love it as an unintentional satire of toxic masculinity. I say unintentional because anyone who knows anything about John Milius knows he was all-in on the ideals of warrior cultures. Conan the Destroyer is sorely missing the authentic gravitas of a John Milius film, partly due to the weakly mixed Basil Poledouris score, which is at its worst in the recycling of the Thulsa Doom temple theme (nothing short of a crime). I was pleasantly surprised to see such an early Arnold performance have legitimately funny moments, but that's not really Conan unless he's punching a camel, which he does again here. The humor ties into an overall imbalance of a tone that's more about "the friends we made along the way" than the previous film's focus on the brutality of survival in a warrior culture. And what an eclectic group of friends it is this time around with Wilt Chamberlain, Grace Jones, and Tracey Walter aka Bob, the Joker's "Number One Guy" in Batman (1989). Overall, Conan the Destroyer feels like low-rent Conan the Barbarian the whole way through but the Lovecraft-esque Brundlefly monster at the end was unexpected and somewhat awesome. I had a great time with the movie, though, because while watching it it hit me like a ton of bricks that there was a VHS copy of Conan the Destroyer in my home as a child and I saw it probably a half-dozen times about 35 years ago. For a bit I thought maybe The Shining was going to be your favorite, but it was no match for your love of Irvin Kershner's sequel to the original Star Wars movie. Only one made it in your 10 favorite. So, that finally ends our year-by-year bracket polls. We'll decide your favorite '80s movie based on all of your number ones and a few others. For those that are unfamiliar, Late Night With The Devil follows the story of a late-night talk show host who, in an attempt to boost dwindling ratings, brings on an allegedly possessed girl for his Halloween special in 1977. One aspect that I particularly enjoyed about this film is how it all seemingly takes place in real time. This is a rather tricky technique to pull off, because you’re dictated to exist in real-time and forced to maintain a certain level of intrigue and tension in each passing second without the luxury of being able to cut to the next hour or day. In this case, you’re trapped with Jack Delroy from beginning to end as he navigates his 90 minute episode, both live on TV and between commercial breaks. Some films employ this method as a gimmick, but in this case, it actually elevates the narrative to a level it wouldn’t have otherwise achieved. As events begin to escalate, you start to experience the same level of anxiety and confusion that Jack himself faces as he’s obligated to keep the show going, no matter the cost. It’s great editing, excellent writing, and overall a very intelligent way to foster suspense. However, this all would’ve amounted to nothing if it weren’t for the incredible performance from David Dastmalchian, who once again proves himself to be one of the most underrated and under-appreciated actors working today. One thing David is especially remarkable at in particular is portraying a man haunted by thoughts of inadequacy and severe trepidation, which is precisely what this movie required in order to make the story work. The range of emotions necessary to embody a man that’s conflicted by a desire to be seen in contrast of being exposed to the horrors of the supernatural is a very thin line to walk, and yet David pulls it off with beautiful strides. However, I do think the movie begins to lose itself in the third act. Contrasting its previous slow-burn approach, it instead turns a bit bombastic in its presentation, implementing some pretty egregious CGI that heavily removes the audience from the viewing experiencing. But overall, I thought this was a very unique and effective horror film, and absolutely a standout in 2024.

#spacetruckers oder Stuart Gordons missglückte Eintrittskarte in den Mainstream. Der Erfolg des Vorgängers Fortress - Die Festung sorgte dafür, dass Gordon diesen 25 Millionen Dollar teuren Film machen konnte. Besetzt mit einem erstaunlich gut aufgelegten #dennishopper , einem jungen #stephendorff und der hübschen #debimazar (und durchaus prominenten Nebenrollen, wie z.B. #georgewendt ), erzählt der Film eine Geschichte über Lastwagenfahrer im All, die eine äußerst gefährliche Fracht an Bord nehmen. Im Gegensatz zu seinen früheren Filmen (die eher für schwarzen Humor bekannt sind) tat er dies mit grellen Farben und grellem Humor. Der Humor vertrug sich aber auch nicht wirklich mit den immer erkennbaren Grindhouse- und Sleaze-Ansätzen. Manche der Effekte sind erstaunlich gut (vor allem die praktischen Effekte), aber viele leider gar nicht. Erschreckend schwaches und hässliches CGI lässt den Film unnötig trashig aussehen. Space Truckers ist schwer unterhaltsam, hat richtig coole Elemente (die Kampfdroiden sind wirklich scary), ist aber ein Film der Kategorie: „grandios gescheitert“. Anders’s thoughts on The Princess Bride: “I know it’s a cliche to say that with some films you can watch it again and again and never get bored of it. The Princess Bride truly is one of those films. You could be down in the dumps, having a bad day or just not feeling well, you put this film on and it immediately fills you with joy and puts a big smile on your face. There is nothing about The Princess Bride that I would change. It’s perfect. Every camera shot, music choice, piece of dialogue and performance is top notch. Like everyone involved with this film understood and knew the assignment. It’s one of the best comedies of all time. And apropos, if you’re a super fan of the film, I’d recommend Cary Elwes’s book ‘As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the making of The Princess Bride’. Yo comprendo su angustia.. pero hay que vivir. Jonás: ¿Por qué hay que vivir? Mi Reflexión: Cuando no se encuentra un Por Qué no se puede dar con un Para qué. La sinrazón aniquila la esperanza. LA MISIÓN: MÄRTA "Le pedí algo en que emplear mi fuerza, y también me la dio. Mi misión eres tú." Mi Reflexión: Creer puede llegar a ser funcional a la búsqueda de la concreción de una meta personal. Pedir para satisfacer un deseo. LA DECEPCIÓN: EL PASTOR “Si Dios no existiera, ¿habría alguna diferencia? .. No buscaríamos explicación al sufrimiento. Si no existiera un creador, no habría vida eterna, ni designio. … Dios mío … Dime por qué me has abandonado.” Mi Reflexión: El Pastor considera que, aún siendo su fiel servidor, Dios ha dejado de protegerlo quitándole a su esposa. Puede encontrar palabras para justificar las atrocidades del mundo pero jamás podrá hallar un justificativo para su dolor personal. LA VOZ DE DIOS: EL FELIGRÉS ¿No le parece que nos equivocamos al pensar en la Pasión..? ... Comprender que nadie comprende. Quedarte solo justo cuando necesitas confiar en alguien. Un sufrimiento terrible. Pero no fue eso lo peor. Cuando lo crucificaron y se quedó ahí colgado y sufriendo gritó "Dios mío, Dios mío... ¿Porqué me has abandonado?.. Creyó que todo lo que había predicado era mentira. Cristo tuvo grandes dudas antes de morir. Eso debió ser su mayor sufrimiento. Me refiero al silencio de Dios. Mi reflexión: Seguramente quien tiene fe siempre sabrá escuchar la voz de su dios, hasta en los silencios. Mi conclusión final: Los padecientes de esta historia no encuentran un "entiendo tu dolor" en la mirada del otro, solo escuchan el silencio de Dios en su corazón.
