Feb/Summary 🫶 Haven’t fished much the last month but tried to get out whenever I could , since the season started I managed to land every fish I hooked until February as I lost 3 fish in 3 back to back sessions and one of them felt so decent (could be even a catfish /carp) snagged me not far from the margins and had to wait about an hour watching the tip and expecting the fish to swim free at any second , unfortunately it was set free from the snag and the hook at the same time 🥲 Defo that made me feel so down for couple of days and lost some of my confidence then I back out to a new swim is where I lost one of the other 2 , first cast landed a fish before I set the second rod up, then I cast again and went to have a look at the fish which is in the net and the rod went again landing me a brace of Thames Barbel. Well it's not often I get speechless at a fish but this one has. Setting off after a big end of season barbel with one rod I chucked a big bit of meat in the margin on the second rod to see if I could temp a chub in the cold conditions. Sitting back and not expecting much just taking in the beautiful countryside in all its winter colours. The mind away dreaming of ending the season with a big fish my margin rod ripped off and soon headed to mid river into a powerful flow, straight away the thought was barbel, but then it didn't feel like one, and then it did. A powerful fight that had me guessing the whole way was ended when I had my first glimpse of a big chub inevitably heading for the marginal vegetation. A hard pull to divert it had its head up and ready to net. A shout of yes left my mouth as I leaned over to look at my prize. I gasped at the depth of the fish and thought, that looks big. But the realisation of what I had only hit as I lifted it out the water and felt the weight, then I knew straight away I had something special. A weigh in the net had my heart racing as it reads 8lb 4oz. Taking away the weight of the net left me with a fish that weighed 7lb dead!! A truly special fish that has piled the weight on throughout the last couple of months in the treacherous, unfishable floods we have had since the new year. Yesterday was my last session of this river season. I had a few things to do in the morning, then headed to the river. When I got there, the river was very high, and I wasn’t that confident to be honest, and I had just got two new free spirit barbel tamers that I was using for the first time. The 10th barbel I landed from this small stretch of river this season, and 9th different fish. I hadn’t made the effort to fish for nearly month after getting a bit burnt out with it, deciding it was probably time for a rest and recoup. However with some warmer weather and rain coming in the river came calling once again! First swim I dropped into was one I hadn’t fished much in the autumn but I had history with, but after sitting there for nearly an hour drinking baileys coffee, watching football on my phone and holding onto my brolly that was trying to take off in the wind, nothing had come of it. The decision was made to have one final cup and move on upstream when all of a sudden the moody but strangely calming atmosphere created by the pattering of rain was shattered as the pin screams and I jump out of my skin. With coffee now all over my lap I strike into a hefty fish and after a relatively hassle free fight I scoop this one into the net. She weighed 12.02 making it my second 12+ of the autumn and as you can see a recognisable one, might’ve even been an ounce heavier if she wasn’t missing a pelvic fin 😉. Tough day today targeting barbel. They have moved from some of their main holding areas since I last fished for them. Took a while to find where they had moved but, fortunately they were feeding when I discovered them. Two on a caddis and one on a squirmy.
