This started out with a walk on the beach. A piece of sun bleached drift wood caught my eye. It had a real personality about it. The grain twisted and turned. Then I saw this chunk of wood had a character in it that made me smile. I put it in the car, drove home and started to imagine what I would make out of it. I cut a broken end off of it and noticed an unmistakable aroma of Western red cedar. Then I sanded the outside to see what the real colour of the cedar looked like and was pleasantly surprised. It was so dark, rich and aromatic. Nothing was carved to enhance the shape, even the ‘toes’ are separated by natural cracks that were in the wood. After only a few hours of work and sanding, I brought it upstairs to show my wife. The reaction was priceless, no words, just a wonderful, hearty, laugh out loud. This piece has been pure joy to work on. Mother nature created it and I saw its potential, and with a smile on my face, brought it to life. This corner display is absolutely gorgeous. A masterpiece put together with a collaboration of unique and rare burls. The base is a thick slab from a twisted up Sitka spruce burl. Beautiful ‘ribbons’ reflect back at you throughout the burl. Next, the ‘stem’ or ‘trunk’ is actually a large piece of a Western red cedar root that has been infected or ‘endowed’ with no fewer than twenty four small burls of varying sizes. The root has been masterfully cut at lengths that can be drilled through longitudinally, without breaching the sides. To give you an idea of how rare this burled root is, it’s the only burled root that I have ever found in my 30 years of road construction experience. I kept it stored, not knowing what to make out of it for about 15 years. When the vision was formed, holes were drilled through, a threaded rod was inserted, put in a lathe and the ends faced. All of the shelves are slabs of Cypress burls - three sister slabs from one burl and two from another. A long threaded rod was inserted through the five root ‘posts’ and five Cypress shelves and the thick base burl, nuts were threaded onto each end of the rod and tightened to hold it all together. Would you just look at those colors!!!! Believe it or not, this mug has one glaze on it. It's fierce and bold and ridculously vibrant. I wish ceramics was as easy as I thought it was going to be, but it isn't. Not all pieces I pull from the kiln make it. Sometimes, they crack on the bottom or the glaze runs, or in this case, the piece bloats and can not be used for dinnerware. If you like the grain in burled wood, you’re going to love this classy spruce burl. It was saved maybe a touch too late because it had started to rot. But that rot also resulted in the beautiful, funky patterns, mixing with the wild grains of the burl and the holes and tunnels in the wood. Altogether, you get a piece that is absolutely wicked. As far as burls are concerned, this is a beauty, perhaps one of my favourites. This remarkable piece is a small pine tree with roots encapsulated by an epoxy silver metallic base. The trunk and branches of the small tree carry the first shelf at 36 cm height. Dragon Head Dinner Table This tabletop has been waiting for some legs to complete it. Believe it or not, there are over eleven gallons of epoxy in this table. It’s quite heavy, so the base has to be strong and stable, so the choice was steel tubing. I believe the base needs to be just as beautiful as the top. So the legs and coupler have been designed, bent, formed, welded and finished by the same artist that had imagined and designed the top. The legs were then ‘painted’ with VA gun metal metallic grey epoxy. The legs and coupler are easily removed from the top to aid in shipping, storage or setting up. The top: The wood, I believe is hemlock. It was in a burn pile but didn’t get completely burned. The ‘chunk’ was brought home along with other firewood. When it had dried out, it went inside the house but was too big to go in the wood stove. I cut a couple of slabs off of it and noticed ‘dragon heads’. I cleaned out some rot that became the eyes which I coloured red metallic and a background of gold in turmoil because dragons love gold! Two spruce burls make up the foundation of the top, surrounded by a ‘tumultuous sea’ of turquoise, green and blues with amazing highlights of gold. The ‘sea’ looks like it could be boiling. Cast into a small oval, it is a perfect setting for a romantic rendezvous for two love birds. The ‘leg’ is a trunk and branches of a small alder tree. The trunk set into a socket of poplar turned on the lathe and fastened to the base which is a piece of Russian poplar 2” thick. The bark was kept intact to show its personality. In total only two pieces. The top is attached to the branches and trunk which is fitted into the socket and secured with one large steel pin, to the base which also shows off a serene turquoise green river gently flowing under the socket. 12” Pine Tree Bowl When I first spotted this tiny pine tree, it was like a little low lying bush. I had no idea what I would or could make out of it. Something about it attracted me. I brought it home and there it sat for about one year until an opportunity arose. I molded the branches to cradle a bowl which was very challenging to manage 20 individual little branches at the same time. The next challenge was to keep the bowl and the base level. Next it needed a base to support the bowl so a metallic salmon-coloured epoxy base was poured as the root base wasn’t adequate enough on its own. Now it sits proudly, waiting for you to put some fruit or chips or popcorn in it to complete its next task. Patchwork Wood Block Table Top This piece is an example of the artist using left over pieces of wood and burls to make something truly beautiful, wasting nothing. The table top is a conglomeration of six species of wood consisting of spalted alder, red cedar, cypress, hemlock, Sitka spruce, and Russian poplar, all hand-picked and placed in a random pattern. The approximately 1 inch thick (25 mm) table top is framed in red cedar. The base is made from steel plate and tubular steel, coated with durable glossy metallic charcoal finish. A conversation piece that will keep you and your guests talking for hours at suppertime. See if you can name the species of each block of wood, it may surprise you. Three-tier Water Feature Display This inspiration came from a collection of different pieces of wood and at different times. The post or trunk used to be a piece of Sitka spruce driftwood, the shelves were originally meant to be firewood (alder) and the ‘colour’ was a collaboration between my daughter and myself. The trunk used to be bleached white, had been attacked by teredos and showed signs of rot. I decided to stain it dark brown. The shelves were saved from the wood stove a couple of years ago when I decided to slice the alder into slabs, dried it out thoroughly, and made it as water tight as possible with duct tape. Then I discovered this amazing turquoise gold and it finally all came together to make this gorgeous piece. Phoenix This piece literally came from the ashes. I rescued a piece of root that was in a burn pile on a recently logged block. This is a piece of the root that I rescued. A translucent, peach coloured epoxy top fits it well. The top has what I call the ‘cracked ice’ effect. I wanted to be able to view the root through the top, so as to show off the root’s beauty.
