News from The Living Ocean making waves in the Caribbean! 🌊 Exploring St. Eustatius has been an absolute delight! 🏝 Walking through the charming village of Oranjestad, surrounded by picturesque Dutch-inspired houses, feels like a piece of home. Managed by @stenapastatia (St. Eustatius National Park Foundation), the island boasts the breathtaking Quill and Boven National Park alongside the renowned St. Eustatius National Marine Park. 🌿🐠 This marine sanctuary, established in 1996, covers 33km2 of land and sea, dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Statia. 💙 During my visit, I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Erik Boman, the director of @stenapastatia, and delving into the significance of this marine haven. Since its inception, the St. Eustatius National Marine Park has flourished, earning a spot among the top 5 sites in the Caribbean for thriving coral and fish populations. 🐟🌿 Some areas boast up to 50% coral cover, including rare black coral strands, showcasing the park's commitment to conservation. We also discussed the invaluable contribution of internship students and volunteers, who support STENAPA's mission year-round. Similar to Zanzibar, where I've been involved in similar initiatives, STENAPA welcomes university students eager to make a difference in marine conservation. Despite the challenges posed by hurricane seasons, the STENAPA team remains steadfast in their dedication to safeguarding the Caribbean's marine ecosystems. 🌀✨ Let's continue to support their vital work and cherish the beauty of St. Eustatius for generations to come!
