Would you just look at those colors!!!! Believe it or not, this mug has one glaze on it. It's fierce and bold and ridculously vibrant. I wish ceramics was as easy as I thought it was going to be, but it isn't. Not all pieces I pull from the kiln make it. Sometimes, they crack on the bottom or the glaze runs, or in this case, the piece bloats and can not be used for dinnerware. I picked up a bunch of crystal on the cheap at the auction, because I LOVE the patterns in it. Awhile back I took @sarahpikepottery ‘s class on @domestika_en about making your own stamps for clay, but haven’t gotten around to creating my own little designs due to #life. I don’t actually want to hang onto this crystal, I think. The tiny studio is a tiny space after all. So I got the idea to use the crystal to make myself some stamps! Then I can pass the crystal along but will still have these fantastic designs PLUS I can add a bit of my own detail. Plainsman M370 is a cone 6, smooth, very plastic, white-firing, semi-vitreous, functionalstoneware. A casting version is also available. Compared to similar clay bodies, M370 is whiter (because it uses more kaolines and less ball clays). It is white enough that the powder is a good base for slips and engobes. Since M370 is less vitreous than a zero-porosity porcelain it does not require as much feldspar in the recipe (enabling us to maximize the clay content for greater plasticity). If you need to attach elements (i.e. handles), use slip (not water) and apply as much pressure as possible during the joining process. #MugOfTheDay today is a contemplation of the balance between food safety and aesthetics. I made this mug for a friend of mine, but it was one of the first times using this glaze and as you see there are little tiny cracks in the glaze. These little cracks , technically called "crazing" in pottery , while not releasing weird toxic chemicals or anything, do provide little crevices that water or food bits can get stuck in, and bacteria and mold can grow in. It's not a huge risk, especially with modern dishwashers, but I opted to keep this mug and tweak the glaze instead, giving them a different mug. For many years several civilizations used porous or semiporous pottery and many people still choose to use it in various ways for various reasons. It seems like currently I don't. The tweaked glaze is not shown here but is more aqua and less forest green. It's still very pretty, and it does not craze at all.
