79 Years of Italian Liberation: Resistance & Remembrance (25 April 2024) On April 25th, the Comites of San Francisco honored the 79th Anniversary of Italy's liberation from Nazifascism and the end of World War II with a special event at the Museo ItaloAmericanoMuseo Italo Americano in San Francisco, attended by 80+ people. The evening kicked off with a nod to last year's commemoration at Casa Fugazi. Maria Fassio Pignati sang "Bella Ciao," accompanied by an enthusiastic audience joining in to sing along. Two poignant reflections marked the evening: 🇮🇹 Red Poppies, resilient symbols of strength, beauty, and remembrance, endure even in the harshest conditions, reminding us of lives lost in battle and inspiring hope for the future. 🇮🇹 "Bella Ciao," originating in Italy but embraced globally, embodies universal values of liberty and resistance against oppression, earning its title as the 'resistance song.’ Special thanks go to the Museo Italo Americano and Sandra Bagnatori for graciously hosting the event, to Paola Tonelli and Sonia Alioto for organizing on behalf of COM.IT.ES. of San Francisco, to Sara Bianchi Chamberlin for capturing the event on film, to Bianca Friundi for technical support, and Gina von Esmarch for capturing the photos. Siamo alla fine dell'Ottocento e i partiti dei lavoratori, socialisti e di ispirazione marxista, prendono coscienza, a livello internazionale, di quanto si sia resa sempre più necessaria una giornata dedicata alla celebrazione del lavoro e dei proletari, una manifestazione di potenza, capace di riunire sotto un'unica egida i lavoratori di tutto il mondo nello stesso momento. Nel 1889 i lavoratori chiedono a gran voce che l'orario di lavoro sia fissato a 8 ore sempre e comunque, e non più a 10 o a 12 come accadeva in alcuni paesi. A prendere le redini sono gli Stati Uniti, proponendo il Primo maggio poichè memori di una manifestazione operaia avvenuta a Chicago nel 1886, cominciata il primo di maggio e proseguita per molti giorni, fino a terminare nel sangue. La data viene accettata e nel 1890 vengono organizzate le prime manifestazioni operaie in tutto il mondo, decretando un successo plateale che ha portato alla ripetizione di quelle stesse manifestazioni, ogni Primo maggio, anche in Italia. Do you know what ‘guaglione’ means? Dialects and Italian songs, what a wonderful symphony they make! I think I’ve done the neighbours heads in lately with my loud Italian playlist! Many songs stemming from the days where I would watch my mum and dad waltz the night away like they were the only two on the dance floor. @siestacartel you brought the ‘guaglione’ back into my memory file! From Guaglione, Paese e Bella Ciao just to name a few. Such an incredible assortment of heartfelt and lively tunes, awakening every sense of what it felt like to be part of an Italian club & the San Marchese community. Many connections to this… . Many childhood memories such as dancing at the back of the hall while our parents paced up and down the dance-floor. We would create all sorts of concoctions at the table with all the left over food and drinks. But the most priceless memory of all - arriving at somebody’s house after midnight once the dinner dance had ended. The adults would continue to drink, dance and sing loudly while the pot of boiling water and sauce stewed over the stove, cooking a second meal in the early hours of 2 or 3am. All the children…sprawled across the floor, on sofas or wherever we could lay our heads, asleep but always ready for pasta! . My mother and father were both an incredible force during the San Marco club days. I could never match the long hours and dedication they put into these events, but the simple act of making homemade pasta these days with my mother brings me a fulfilment and connection to my Italian heritage, as well as memories that I feel so fortunate and sometimes overwhelmed to have. @mariascara21 you are the part of the circle that just keeps on growing!
