Or possibly you lived with or worked with people who had experienced a huge fracture in their relationship? It’s not pretty, nor is it easy to maneuver around. In these verses, Paul gets right to the heart of things. There were divisions within the church which were affecting many. The devil wants nothing more than Christian believers to be at war with one another, because when that happens, the entire body suffers and the true work of Christ cannot be accomplished. David Guzik says, “The ancient Greek word for divisions is ‘schismata.’ Although we derive our English word ‘schism’ from this Greek word, it does not really mean a ‘party’ or a ‘faction’; it properly means ‘tear or rend.’ Paul’s plea is that they stop ripping each other apart, tearing up the body of Christ.” Nobody knew the pain of this as Paul. For he and Barnabas had had a sharp disagreement over John Mark, and parted ways (Acts 15:36-41). Division is never of God. It only causes heartache, and disruption. Yet, because we serve a God who is much bigger than our human weaknesses, He can and will work in and through it if we allow Him room. The key…forgiveness. William Barclay describes “perfectly united” as this: [It’s] a medical word used of knitting together bones that have been fractured, or joining together a joint that has been dislocated.
