• Active Management of the Third Stage • Swipe to see the placenta! 😍 👶 As baby emerges, a postpartum Pitocin drip will be started, or the dosage will be adjusted if already running for induction/augmentation. 🧑‍⚕️Your provider may initiate fundal rubs immediately (firm pressure at your belly button directed towards your back to encourage placenta detachment and/or firming of uterus) while providing traction to the umbilical cord. 💗Alternatively, they may start an exam of your tissues to see if repair is necessary. They may work on or even complete a repair as they wait for the placenta to come. 🩸Or they may wait for signs that the placenta has released (separation gush, your desire to push). 🤱Most often, they will guide/pull the placenta out as you bond with your baby. Sometimes you may be asked to give a little push to assist. 🏥Once the placenta is out, it is placed in a bin and placed on the delivery table. It is a beautiful and i believe very honest look to postpartum and its nuances and challenges. It is a definitely must watch for anyone that have been tru a postpartum period or are going to. BIRTH PHOTOS AND VIDEOS For my last birth I Hired a photographer to take photos and also a video. In the past, my mum or my husband had done these but I really wanted them to be more present this time and so I outsourced. I also thought this might be my last birth so wanted to make sure that I had some beautiful photos! Hiring a photographer or a videographer might not be possible for everyone. So if this is something that you can’t source or you just don’t feel comfortable with a Photographer, then there are some other things that you can do: 📷 Purchase a small tripod and pop your phone camera on there to take a video of the whole atmosphere! 📷 Ask the second Midwife present to video or take photos of baby coming out (in whatever angle you feel comfortable- make sure you specify) 📷 Get your support partner or if you have a second support partner Doula etc to be in charge of the photos 📷 Ask a support person to take short little clips throughout the labour. These could be short 5 to 10 second clips they can all be put together in chronological order after the birth. You can put a nice song in the background and then you’ve got a beautiful video which didn’t take up too much of the partners time and distract them from supporting you! Nitrous. I’m often asked about the use of nitrous oxide as a pain management tool in labor. While it’s not for everyone, for others it’s amazing. Nitrous doesn’t take away your discomfort, but it can make you care a lot less about it. I’ve had clients compare it to a buzz or gentle high. It can help you find a rhythm in your labor pattern or delay other forms of pain management (IV pain medications or epidural). The great thing about nitrous is it’s easy to use and it’s in and out of your system quickly. If you don’t like it, you simply stop inhaling. The anesthesia team (hospital) or midwife (birth center) will get everything set up and explain how to use it. The #1 rule: only YOU can hold the nitrous to your face. Did you try nitrous? Longer caption and birth story is on Facebook, but I figured I’d just share a snippet on here. Last year, I became a mom. Even though I have had (and will continue to have) sleepless nights, days of exhaustion, a never ending to-do list, and often find myself walking around in circles seemingly accomplishing “nothing,” becoming a mom has, without a doubt, been the single best thing I have ever done. Everyone tells you about how much you are going to love your kids, but I was still unprepared for the kind of love I felt for my son once he was born. It’s the kind of love that is so deep and powerful that you physically ache to your very core. I will forever be in awe of how powerful and beautiful a woman’s body is in supporting a growing a baby both within and outside of her body. It’s a magical experience as a spectator, but growing and birthing a whole human yourself gives you a completely different perspective of what our bodies truly are capable of accomplishing. Some days I still can’t believe I am a mom who made this little human, but I will be forever grateful that I became one and have the pleasure of experiencing motherhood firsthand. Pregnancy, labor, delivery, and motherhood as a whole may not be a walk in the park, but the love I have as a mother has made every struggle, ache, and pain worth it. Happy Mother’s Day! 💕 Special shout-out to my entire birthing team. My midwives, Sarah and Hayley @geneabirth, provided me with the confidence to trust my body and let everything unfold as naturally as possible. My doula, Jeannie, offered endless personal support and teamed up nicely with Matt to give me what I needed throughout the day. If I could summarize the first few days of postpartum into one photo, it’s this one. Diaper changes on the bed, nursing cami, and still bleeding. I love the way this entire newborn session exemplified what it means to be a new mom, with a brand new, 48 hours old baby. No makeup, no fancy outfits, she left the bed only briefly to take a few photos in the nursery, and her husband took care of both of them the entire time. 45 days before we move and we FINALLY got official orders from the Army. I love that the Army has not only enabled us to live in gorgeous places, like Alaska, but it’s allowed me to meet incredible people along the way. 2 things I’ve never do when photographing families with littles… 1. Rush you or rush the session to completion. Unwanted stress comes across in photos & the interactions won’t appear as genuine. If you’re running late, if your child needs a minute for a snack, if you need an outfit change, or need to nurse, there’s no rush. For scheduling purposes I say my family sessions are “an hour” but never have I actually finished exactly at 60 minutes. I value my work and my clients more than minutes in a photo session. I want to make sure we get everything envisioned and discussed and rushing it along will not accomplish that. 2. Pressure you or your kids to smile. Let’s face it, posing and prompts are tough with littles. I’ll offer guidance on where to stand or I might give you a small prompt like “tickle time” but I will never force your children to sit in certain spot and pose a certain way. It’s just not my style. My lifestyle photography lends more towards the documentary style, which is completely unprompted. The images will tell the best story as I capture it as is and will portray the most emotion this way. Quick life update. I’ve worked 1 on 1 with an incredible mentor since November and it’s been a game changer for my business. Having a mentor wasn’t even something on my radar, but when I was randomly looking at different birth photographers in the Greenville area I came across Leslie’s page and the first thing I saw was her mentorship post which made me consider it. I was on the fence about getting back into birth photography (hence me looking at other instagram accounts) after having my third baby and balancing 3 littles at home. But with a nudge from my husband, I ventured into mentorship and it has paid off tenfold. Trying to focus on the positives about our upcoming move, here’s three: 1. We will be an hour from family, which means 5 cousins for my kids to play with! When hanging new pictures in your home, do you replace the photo in an already existing frame or buy more frames to hang up? I’m always curious on peoples approach to this. I try to print pictures every 6-ish months and put the new picture in the old frame, but I keep the old ones in there and it’s a fun surprise every time I switch them out. I had a client reach out saying she wanted updated photos of her children with their Grandma and I spent the first half of the photoshoot just observing them quietly behind my lens. I did this so that I could take pictures that really exemplified each child’s personality and unique relationship with their Grammy. I’ve been team canon for over 15 years. I remember being in grade school snapping photos from my aunts canon with my cousin @nikguiney - who is also a photographer and happens to take incredible photos! We used to go on family trips every summer and we’d be the ones taking alllll the photos. And then taking a photography class in high school using my dads old 35 mm canon, and being excited to buy my own canon for the medical trip to Africa I went on after college. It’s always been canon. But fast forward to using my mirrorless in birth photography and I was getting frustrated with focus issues, so I decided to switch over to @sony and I am HERE FOR IT! The Double Hip Squeeze. Counterpressure is a tool we can utilize throughout labor to help the laboring mama. The Double hip squeeze is one pain relief technique we go over before labor begins. This allows everyone to have an idea of what to do once labor start and to cycle through relief techniques until we find what works the best. hey it’s me! The photographer behind all these photos. I recently was on my website and noticed that Instagram wasn’t syncing properly and when I went to my IG it wouldn’t let me log in. After trying to reach out to IG for 3 weeks to figure out why my page was disabled and never receiving an answer I’ve decided to start it all over again. The good news is I have my photos pretty organized on a hard drive, but the bad news is that I’ve had that Instagram account for 4 years… which means that’s a lot of photos lost! During labor, we need to be able to turn off the highly stimulated neocortex, which is the thinking brain, to be able to surrender to the experience. To get in tune with our body. To trust our body. To let it do what it needs to do... We need to be able to connect with the sensations and our baby, and to dig deep into our inner strength. To be able to do that, we need to be in a safe, intimate, and supported environment. Surrounded by people we fully trust, so we don't have to be on 'high alert' and feel like we have to fight for what we want, or submit to whatever someone else says. We need our loved ones to gently touch us, encourage us, remind us that we are not alone, help us dig for the deep power, and most of all, they must TRUST US! Labor is no time for power struggle. For doubts. For feeling unsafe. When your child enters this world. What hands and environment will they enter into? What voices and words will they first hear? What type of 'spirit' or mood in the room will they first feel? If the moment of the birth of your child gets written into your brain for forever.... What moment is it gonna be and what will be the feelings forever tied to it? We can not control everything about birth. Sometimes things don't go as we hope. But we can make the best choices for our birth team, birthing space, 'procedures'... We need to realize that we either take the reins and make that birthing experience happen...
