Still can’t believe I finished my first year of PA school!🎉 It feels like we had just started yesterday and I remember feeling nervous, unprepared, and uncertain. Deciding to attend a PA program in a new state with no friends and/or family to lean on for support was terrifying. 🚨 Countdown to CASPA🚨: Are you a low GPA applicant and nervous about the new cycle? Well, this post is for you! With the the deadline slowly approaching till CASPA officially opens up, I wanted to share all the 🫖 on how to get your application ready for this upcoming cycle. My best advice: every misdirection on this journey to PA-C has the opportunity to be a redirection. Sometimes it takes a few tries and for some all you need is one school. No matter what happens this cycle feel confident that you have done your best to prepare and be proud of the accomplishments and obstacles you’ve had to overcome to get here! At the end of the day let your passion for the profession, dedication to making a positive impact on patients, and your ‘WHY’ be your motivation. The process may feel impossible and out of reach but as a second cycle applicant with a lower GPA who went from 0 interview requests my first cycle to 5, I can tell you it’s not! A MOMENT OF TRANSPARENCY ✨ This semester in PA school has proven to be a journey of growth and resilience. Navigating through the challenging coursework, I find myself continually adapting and discovering new study techniques tailored to each class. In particular, Adult Primary Care Medicine, an 8-credit class, has been leaving me with feelings of anxiety and discouragement. Yet, here I am, standing resilient. I share this not to dwell on the struggles, but to emphasize the importance of perseverance and trust in both oneself and the process. In my mind, the video on slide 3 is cute—a happy girl dancing and singing to her cat. However, it doesn’t reveal what transpired after the video concluded. Fatigued, I sat on my couch, listening to the same cheerful tunes, pondering a series of questions: • Enjoying your wine? Yes. • Enjoying the music? Yes. • Are you happy right now? Yes. • Have you been happy for a long period? Yes. Despite my elation, a dark turn occurred as a simple question lingered: “Do you think that this happiness will last?” Contemplating, I found myself thinking, “Okay, then tonight would be a good night to end it all.” So, I planned it for the next day, January 22. Today marks one year since that pivotal day, reflecting on the six months of silently carrying the heavy weight of thoughts. Wondering what changed my mind during that period, I conversed with my dad. It’s about me and what I allow myself to believe. Not sure why I’m sharing this—maybe to convey, echoing my exclamations to my dad, that “none of my experiences are unique to me.” I want you to understand you’re not alone. With gained wisdom, I realize we’re not as alone as we tend to believe. Perhaps, like my dad tells me, you are no ordinary person meant for more than you have right now. I know nothing can change your mind, but consider my journey a marker—proof that even in the darkest times, things can and do get better. For you, if not me, know there are people to talk to who will understand. Your people will find a way to understand you, and if your current ones can’t, there are more out there. You just have to find them. Applying to PA school can be challenging and feel overwhelming. Here are some tips that helped me get through the process and into PA school. 🥼 1. DO network - Networking is a powerful tool that can open various doors and opportunities. Networking is what helped me to get my first direct patient care job!🤝🏾 2. DON’T apply to every school on CASPA - Quality over quantity. Applying to each school requires a significant investment of time and money. A targeted and strategic approach enhances your chances of finding the right program for you.⏳ 3. DO stay organized with supplemental, fees, and hours - PA programs have STRICT deadline so staying organized ensures that you meet these expectations and save money. 📋 4. DON’T compare yourself to others - Everyone’s journey to becoming a PA is unique. Everyone has different timelines, goals, backgrounds, and factors. Focus on yourself and your path. 🏃🏾♀️ 5. Do extend yourself grace - The process is already demanding and complex, it’s okay to not excel in every aspect. Also acknowledge that some circumstances are out of your control. 🤞🏾 6. DON’T be afraid to ask questions - Asking questions is a fundamental part of the learning process and allows you to deepen your understanding and clarify concepts. *HINT* Ask PAs about their application process and journey! ❓ 7. DO go into interviews confidently - Confidence during interviews will ensure you give the best presentation possible. Practice, preparation, and a positive mindset can contribute to your confidence.🫡 8. DON’T give up - Persistence pays off! Many successful PAs have faced rejection before gaining acceptance. And just like that.. my first term of Medical School is passed and complete 🥲❤️ WHEW what a time! I am so grateful for the friends, mentors, and people I met along the way. Truly a blessing! A few things I learned this term: 1. DON’T compare your journey to anyone else’s. God placed you right where you are for a reason. 2. Sacrifice. Some things you’re going to have to give up/reduce in order to optimize your time or get where you’re going. 3. The Company You Keep. I am soooo grateful for the friendships I’ve made. To have a group of God fearing women with like minded values has kept me afloat. 🤞🏾 4. Know Yourself! If you know you don’t study well at night, don’t procrastinate 😂 just get up early and get it done. 5. Seek Help. There were many times where I didn’t understand a topic or wasn’t doing well in a certain area. I wasn’t afraid to ask a friend, learning strategist, or even a family friend at another med school for help. Seeking help paid off every time! There’s so much more I’ve learned but I’ll save that for another day.
