It's my turn to introduce myself - I'm Therese Sullivan, one of the co-founders and the operations lead at Optimal Living Therapy. My journey into occupational therapy began uniquely. While pursuing ballet, I was introduced to occupational therapy through interactions with soft tissue OTs who managed injuries. This experience led me to prioritise OT as my top choice for university. After graduating, I worked at a hospital, where I serendipitously crossed paths with my future business partner and "work wife", Lauren Hart. Transitioning into community-based OT, I experienced a profound sense of autonomy and the far-reaching impact our profession can have. This inspired me to join Lauren in building Optimal Living Therapy from the ground up - and what an incredible, eye-opening journey it's been so far. Over the past 6 years, we've transformed our practice into a thriving business, driven by our unwavering commitment to empowering an amazing team. It's been a challenge, but I can say with a grateful heart that I've found my true calling as an OT, business leader and co-founder. Being an OT requires such a diverse set of skills, and what fills me with joy is supporting others to realise their potential, embrace life's challenges, and cultivate their own growth mindset. Aligned with this mission, Lauren and I co-founded Otuition - an engaging, self-paced e-learning platform that equips OTs with the skills and knowledge they need to truly thrive. Different from low back pain, sciatica is a pain that happens along the sciatic nerve, which begins in the lower back and radiates down each side of the leg. ⚡️What causes Sciatica? A slipped disc (or herniated disc) in the spine, is the most common cause of sciatica. It happens when a disc bulges out, putting pressure on the nearby nerves, resulting in sharp pain, numbness, and weakness in one side of the hip and leg. 🩺 What to do? Sciatica usually gets better over time with sufficient rest and a healthy lifestyle. However, prolonged rest is not recommended as it lengthens the recovery process. Individuals are encouraged to stay active and perform normal acitvities. Physiotherapy and acupuncture may also help relieve pain caused by sciatica. If symptoms persist a few months after the onset, individuals should seek help from a medical professional.
