Did you know Black Lotus actually began under a different name? 🖤🪷 When I first formed my LLC at the end of 2023, I was motivated to get everything for the business together, but I was struggling with what to name it. I settled on a name that was perfectly adequate but a bit generic. I started working with @summit.therapeutics on building a website and thinking of what I wanted it to look like. (You should definitely be following her!) Going through that process, I came to the sudden realization that I was building something that lacked authenticity. The name came to me one day like a bolt of lightening - thanks, Mercury Retrograde 🪐 - and Black Lotus Therapeutics was born! There's a few layers to the meaning behind the name. 🖤 Black- if you've ever felt like the black sheep, a misfit, like you didn't belong, lived with depression, suffered through grief, I've been there too and you are welcome here. 🪷 Lotus- No Mud, No Lotus by Thich Nhat Hanh is a book that explores the Buddhist philosophy of transforming suffering. The lotus flower is an infamous metaphor for growing through muck and mud to blossom into a symbol of beauty and grace. 👐 Therapeutics- the definition of the word is to help healing take place. That is the ultimate goal of every session, whether that is on a physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual level. By focusing on therapeutic massage and somatic techniques, I help clients achieve deeper layers of relaxation throughout the body and mind, so clients leave feeling more connected and at home in their body. There is one more reference in the name, but you must be deeply embedded in "nerd culture" to identify. 2023 was not my year. 2023 was a year full of grief, pain, and immense suffering for me. There were many times I did not think I would not make it to see the sun rise, and as many times when I did not want to. I wish I could say I'm leaving that all behind and jumping into the new year with only positive thoughts - good vibes only... but that just isn't real, and it isn't who I am. I'm sorting through the rubble of the old beliefs and thoughts that once made up my life and trying to find my footing among what was to find the path to who I will become. Every step I take fills me with fear and self-doubt if this is the right step. But I'm still here. I'm still trying to find my way, and I know I'm not alone in the wild darkness. I'm learning to brave the wilderness as Brenee Brown puts it. If there is one thing I'm taking with me into 2024, it's this.
