Had an adventure picking bramble blackberries. 😅 Fun fact: and bramble is a thorn covered vine that creeps along the ground. Squatting and bending over to get the berries as I am followed by a red wasp and fearing a snake is going to randomly pop out is not all it’s cracked up to be. Would you believe me if I told you this was actually a creamy WHITE the day I poured it into the mold? After letting the bars cure for 4-6 weeks, they turned into this beautiful dark brown. Swipe to see the before picture. Why this happened? Vanilla! Being a flavor derived from orchids, vanilla pods start out very green and then darken to brown as they age and ripen. The darkening is caused by various reactions in some of the components. One of those is vanillin, which is the organic compound that gives vanilla its flavor. 💚 Blackberry Terrace Bed 💚 I recently finished planting our blackberries complete with trellis. The unique aspect is this bed is on a slope. I created a small terraced pathway on the downside slope to make walking and harvesting easier. As I work on setting up this bed the pathway has already proven convenient and ergonomic for my knees. Some few days after putting the final touches on the trellis it's nice to see this years primocanes already starting to come up! The first 5 photos show the finished project while the last five show how the bed was constructed. I first dug a trench and moved the soil to a berm for the pathway. After transplanting the blackberries into the bed (the crowns were raised with soil) the trench was filled with charcoal, rotting wood, horse manure and topped with goat bedding. This "trench bed" or "pit bed" is a technique that I am using to establish many of our new beds now because it holds much more water (and fertility). It's my first time creating a wire trellis so I got more practice with fence wire terminations! Except for the two wood fence posts, the wire, ratchet tensioners, t-posts, insulators were used / salvaged and repurposed. The columbua star thornless blackberry plants were gifted two is two seasons ago. We grew them sorawling in the corner of a garden as a temporary nursery spot until now. The crowns are much bigger than when we received them and they are ready bust with growth! I look forward to seeing last year's canes fill in more as the season progresses! 💚🤗👍🏼🌱

This might be a soapmaker “hot take,” but I don’t really vibe with swirled soaps all that much 🌀🌀 Don’t get me wrong, I find these two bars to be absolutely stunning. That said, swirled designs don’t really require all that much effort. Sure, you want to pick the right colors and make sure they don’t get muddled, but honestly, it’s a pretty basic design. Again, I'm not trying to throw shade at swirls (or anyone who loves them); they definitely have their appeal. It’s just I'm more drawn to designs that involve a touch of complexity and creativity. Sure, every now and then, I’ll still whip up a swirl, but truth be told, I’d probably much rather be creating something a bit more adventurous 🤷🏻♂️ And, I mean… did you see yesterday’s post? That rainbow soap is something else!

"Majestic Plumes" This is my entry for this month's #SoapchallengeClub. I know I said I would get to this post only later this evening. But I got my lunch break, and this is a perfect time to take my mind off for some time. For this month, we had to create soaps featuring the drop swirl technique . This is such a beautiful technique with endless possibilities. You can create unique designs with drop swirl on its own or add another soap technique or design element and create something completely different. I wanted to do something different and it's not as easy to find an unique idea. I decided to pay homage to the Majestic and proud peacock 🦚 this month. The soap is an upside down design . First, i made the scraped background for the peacock and also to amplify the shape of the feathers. Next, the fluid soap drops were poured, mimicking the feather colors. Finally, the peacock embed went in. I decided not to level out the top of the soap or rather the bottom part of the soap now since it gives a nice curvature, I think. "Eternal Flame" This is my bonus entry for this month's #SoapchallengeClub . This month, we had to create the drop swirls technique which I think is super fun. Typically, I don't manage to make two attempts for the competition, one for the competitive category and one for bonus. Honestly, this was no different. This is part of a happy accident. I was very pleased when I cut into the loaf last week. I love how the drops are positioned and kind of looks like a fire or lamp. Agave Teardrop Elixir is my entry for the April ‘24 Soap Challenge Club. This cream & agave colored design with separate layers of mini drop swirls was fun to create in a 10” silicone mold. The fragrance is Emerald Agave by @brambleberry, which smells fresh and awakening, behaves very well and stays fluid in cp and discolors slightly to off white. I used squeeze bottles for the mini drops and funnel style beakers for the drop swirl on top. Purple jojoba beads and gold beads with a swirl and oven processing finished the loaf. I’ve added my Triple Butter Soaps FINALLY 🧈 This soap has a creamy, soft lather that conditions your skin as you wash and rinse it! It’s got shea, cocoa, and mango butter and it’s formulated with coconut milk 🥥 As always, lightly scented with a phthalate-free crisp apple fragrance. I’ve been testing it out and I’m loving it so much! I’ve spent so much time formulating, tweaking, and testing this recipe, and I’m very happy with this final form. I only say this is the first “version” because my brain decided to blank out while cutting it and I cut them into the wrong size, making them significantly smaller (hence the reduced price). Tired mom brain 🙂↕️ Anyways, I love this soap and I hope you love it too! I’ve only got a limited quantity available, so once they’re sold out you’ll have to wait til the next batch cures. It seems like every year, I add a new soap to our lineup of Pride-themed bars, and each new soap is a testament to our journey (and my growth as a soap maker) 🧼 Pride & Joy 🏳️🌈 has been with us since before Sleepy Hollow Handmade even existed. After that came Trans Pride 🏳️⚧️ (now called True Colors), followed by Venus and Bi-Scentual, and then last year I introduced Pastel Pride. Not one to break tradition, I began dreaming up this year's Pride soap at the end of last summer. While I didn't have the time to make it then, the idea lingered in my mind ever since, growing more vivid with each passing day. Anyway, a few weeks back, I finally brought this long-awaited creation to life! Launching in June, Ray of Light 🌈 is a rainbow-inspired design that I'm certain will become an instant classic (although I’m not certain I’ll bring it back in this form — those rainbow balls took literal hours of hand-rolling 😵💫) Stay tuned for more updates on the launch of Ray of Light and join us in our continued journey to celebrate love and inclusivity!
