Creative, down to earth, loving, selfless, wise, talented, an open book...all those wonderful things and more. Oh yeah, and let's not forget that he gives the best hugs EVER ๐ซถ I got two new pens to try today, they're Copic Spica glitter pens. I used the blue one on Brandon's necklace...what do you guys think? I also have a gold Spica pen and can't wait to use it. Mine are 11 AM, Nice to Know You, Blood on the Ground, and Echo. The backing vocals @nicolesrow does on 11 AM and Echo are so beautiful and add this sweet, bright sound that compliments Brandon's voice perfectly ๐ฅน the added effects and dissonant guitar chords in Blood on the Ground pack a punch and add an even angrier sound to it, almost like a growl...I love it! And of course, it's impossible to leave out the kickass intro for Nice to Know You. It's so funky and gets me even more hyped for when that guitar note hits and I start headbanging. I used a reference photo from the amazing and talented @tasyavanree and she loves photography in black and white, so it felt fitting to pay tribute to her signature style!! Mirror of Venus ๐ช๐ ้ๆใฎ้ก This little pic, inspired by my favorite song from @brandonboyd 's solo album "The Wild Trapeze" started as a little scribble in my travel sketchbook, and you can swipe to see the original picture ๐ธ I felt like it deserved to be made into something fancier, so I did it and I'm happy with how it turned out! I love outer space, it has always fascinated me. "Mirror of Venus" for me evokes images of the blackness of outer space and glowing stars leading the way to Venus ๐ฅฐ plus, it's just a gorgeous song by none other than my favorite musician and artist in the universe. It felt only natural and fitting to turn it into a drawing! Honestly, there's no better way to unwind after a long school day than drawing while listening to music... sometimes I sing too. It takes my mind off all the worries I've had, and art is a way that I show love to the people, things, and places that make me happy. I've always considered drawing to be a love language of sorts ๐ because of that, I don't understand the whole "tortured artist" trope For me, drawing is something joyful and I feel the most creative when I'm happy! I got to try my new yellow ink in this picture. It wasn't opaque like it said it was, and no matter how much I mixed it and shook it, it still didn't get dark enough. It's still pretty though and I plan to continue using it anyway. Thought I'd do a redraw of an old @incubusofficial fanart piece featuring Brandon: "Blood on the Ground" ๐ผ๐ถ๐ฉธswipe to see the original digital drawing I made in 2021, which didn't completely fit in the frame. I'm sure we can all agree that I've gotten a LOT better since then ๐น because although I am proud of my past pieces and how much passion I put into them, sometimes they make me cringe to look at. I used a reference photo from the special KROQ "ROQ The Beach" concert earlier this year, there were so many good photos from that performance ๐ I'm excited for the people in Australia and New Zealand who will get to see them perform in April. ๐ถ You're a Jet Black Crow...deadly and beautiful๐ถ ๐ฆโโฌ๐๐ My drawing for Inktober day 13 "Rise". This picture is inspired by a solo song by Incubus's Brandon Boyd, titled "Jet Black Crow" and a short story that he wrote to go along with it. Both the song lyrics and the story have such beautiful and rich imagery, making my picture scenes from The Neverending Story and Spirited Away...can you see their influences in the picture? ๐ฒ This was the first time I got to draw a bird in probably 10 years or so, I feel like I'm a bit rusty but I'm still happy with how it turned out ๐๐ for those of you who don't know, before I was into cats I was into birds, so I drew birds and bird-people! A lot of them were inspired by the art of JG Quintel and some of his characters in "Regular Show" and he continues to be a source of artistic inspiration for me to this day. Also, can we take a minute to appreciate Brandon's 2013 solo album Sons of the Sea? It's so beautiful and emotional and the lyrics and music alike are ethereal...the musician he collaborated with for this album, Brendan O'Brien, is a musical powerhouse too ๐ it's pure poetry, music from the heart of I've ever heard music from the heart. Three Incubus fanart pieces in a row? Uhm, yeah, because honestly why the heck not... especially after the Ocean's Calling festival last night? ๐ผ these guys are my biggest source of artistic inspiration after all! Today I thought I'd give my Posca paint markers another try so I drew @brandonboyd with them, on my fancy Bristol paper. I used my usual Copic markers to color the ears, nose, eyes, and mouth, but everything else is paint marker including the outlining! They're a challenge to use, but a challenge I'm willing to take on because they're so cool and I know that with practice I'll get better ๐จ๐ฉโ๐จ So, I'm participating in Inktober for the first time this year! And of course, like using my paint markers, it's gonna be difficult but that's what makes it all the more exciting ๐บ I'll be posting the daily drawings on my story along with the prompt, and every week I'll post that week's drawings to my feed for all of you to see! I'm hoping to experiment with many different artistic mediums...I did my first challenge in colored pencil and graphite (side note: soft graphite isn't very lefty friendly ๐). After seeing all the photos and videos my pals in the Incufam took of the special KROQ "ROQ The Beach" Incubus concert, I felt so inspired ๐ผ a picture that my dear friend Erika took of @brandonboyd was precious and showed him so happy and in the moment, so naturally I had to turn it into a drawing! Although I'm sad I wasn't there at the beach to rock out with my fam in person, I'm grateful that they took photos and livestreams because I got to be there in spirit and headbang, sing, and jump around with them from home ๐๐ I can't express enough how happy I feel to have fallen in love with a group of such talented musicians with the kindest hearts like them. These guys helped me find my people (@incufam ) and gave me the courage to express myself creatively again and share it with others after all! And as an autistic person, both my fam and the guys themselves are some of the rare and special people that I don't need to mask around. They accept me and appreciate me for who I am, wholeheartedly. New portrait of @brandonboyd on my fancy bristol paper that I got back in Montana because honestly, why the heck not? ๐ธ @_shawnhanna_ continues to take amazing photos of the guys on tour and so many of them are basically begging for me to draw them ๐น gahhh, I love that feeling... seeing something and then just immediately feeling inspired and opening your sketchbook because you've got to capture it on paper. This picture is from when the guys performed in Windsor, Ontario Canada ๐จ๐ฆ Hearing the news of the special "Morning View XXIII" release and the upcoming performance of the whole album at the Hollywood Bowl has me SO, SO EXCITED ๐๐ although I cannot choose just one "favorite" album because they're all special in their own ways, if I absolutely HAD to make a decision then Morning View would be up there. It was the album that truly made me fall in love with Incubus's music as a teen ๐ถ and it's still one of my biggest comfort albums to this day. Been a hot minute since I made a new portrait of the amazing @brandonboyd himself so I thought "hey, why not again?" ๐ผ also thought it would be fun to try drawing from a side point of view for the first time in a while seeing as most of my pictures are front-facing ๐น and you know what? It was a fun challenge! I definitely have a lot of practice I need to do, but I think this picture turned out very well. I used a reference photo from the performance in Rogers, Arkansas this year and wanted to really capture the passion in his singing ๐ค I went to Olympia to visit my family and brought my pencils and outlining pens, so I created a few pictures in my free time. Now that I'm back at the apartment and can access my markers, I'll be coloring them in and sharing them all with you ๐ผ I hope they make you all happy! I'm gonna be busy packing up and moving for the next two weeks or so, but I'll still make sure to draw a lot and post in my free time. Also I can't help but feel like being in an art museum means that he's in his natural habitat ๐น speaking of which, now I kinda wanna visit one soon, or an art show. It's a fascinating and wonderful experience, seeing so many beautiful original works up close and in person. Sometimes I'll approach the painting or drawing and observe the brush strokes or ways that they used colors because different techniques and mediums always fascinate me. The amazing @brandonboyd himself chilling and hanging out between songs ๐ธ๐ต I used a reference photo from the Sick New World festival that happened in Las Vegas not that long ago...from the pictures and videos I've seen so far, it looked like such a fun experience! And of course, Incubus put together an awesome set list as always ๐ค I love how they're playing fan requests, mixing things up, and including deep cuts and rare tracks alongside the hits and classic fan favorites ๐ผ makes me excited for what's in store when the Montana concert rolls around. You could probably say that this is indeed, none other than Brandon Boyd in the wild ๐น๐น I'm still trying to see if I can make it to one of the summer tour dates...there's a lot of stuff coming up around that time ๐ but believe me, I've got my fingers and toes crossed that I'll be able to go! A quick little picture of @brandonboyd singing during last year's tour ๐ถ he always looks so passionate and absorbed in the music while he sings, so I hope that I was able to capture that! ๐ธ I remember how I asked during a @moonlightartscollective stream if he had synesthesia, and it turns out, we both have the same type!! We both perceive music as colors and shapes, which is called chromesthesia. It's such a wonderful experience, not only hearing music you love so much but also SEEING it in the form of bright colors and shapes. I have a tendency to close my eyes when singing or getting into a song because it helps me experience those colors the best. ๐จ (In addition to sounds, I also perceive words, letters, Japanese characters, and numbers as having different colors too. My second picture in the Incubus x Doctor Who art series: Brandon as the 11th Doctor. The 11th Doctor, who is played by Matt Smith, is one of my absolute favorites ๐ผ he's a big goofball, super loving and caring, curious about everything, and always does his best to see the good in people. So it was only a natural choice that I make my hero into my favorite Doctor! ๐ He's holding a sonic screwdriver, the handy little tool that every Doctor carries around: it can break things, fix things, open and close locks, turn devices on and off, scan and retrieve information, hack into electronics, and a lot more. As one of my good friends put it, it's basically the science fiction equivalent of a magic wand. ๐ช On the table next to him is fish sticks and custard...This is one of those jokes where if you're a Whovian, you know. My hero. One of my favorite people on this entire planet. Somebody I will always admire for his love, kindness, humility, and artistic talent in so many forms...none other than @brandonboyd himself. ๐ Even after an unexpected setBACK (okay that was terrible, I'll see myself out the door ๐ฅด) he still rocked ๐the ๐ house and brought all of us fans in the Pacific Northwest together for the best night ever. Ever since I was surprised with the tickets back in June, I knew September 1st would be a night to remember, and it was amazing...even more amazing than I could have dreamed. Incubus still blow me away every time. Their Make Yourself album is probably the most tear-stained first love heartbreak teenage angst album I own and so I'm automatically transported to feeling 15 again when I go their gig. The black t-shirt, plaid shirt with cap and tunnels and key chain guys who moshed out totally helped with that too. I don't care that they have lyrics such as "took a look in a book" and "perils of being in 3D" They sing about topics other bands don't even talk about like "spontaneous combustion (woe is me)" - who else does that?
