As many of you will know, I invest in British hedgehog work through my business. It is important to me to give back to the natural world and I hope my contribution makes such a huge difference. As we're entering into the cooler months, I just wanted to remind you all that not all hedgehogs will hibernate during the winter months, especially if we have a mild winter. With little food resources around, it's vital that we provide food for these native creatures to sustain them until the spring. To do this, simply place a bowl of small cat or dog biscuits out in a feeding station in your garden. If you are feeling flush, then I'd recommend investing in some specialist hedgehog food, my personal favourite is @ark_wildlife's original hedgehog biscuits. Got a bit of a fright 😱when I saw the 👀 on top of the #geordiehoggieshotel 😂 At first thought it was a 🐀but zoomed in a phewf it was just a 🐱🐾 For some reason doesn't seem like the 🦔 are actually going inside this year, just seems to be mice at the moment but 🤞 they start when it gets colder ❤️🦔 Haven't done a post for a while as the 🦔 have been coming and going a bit slower this year. I don't often lift the roof on the #geordiehoggiestravellodge but last night thought I'd check it to see how it was in there and I discovered a sleeping hoggie ❤️🦔 so I quickly put it back on not to disturb. Put the camera out the front hidden in my potato patch 🤣 and this morning had some amazing footage! He pokes his head out a couple of times, looks like he goes in and out a few times. I've put together the first video of some of his evening with the speed turned up 😂❤️🦔 Second video is signs of the hay moving in the tunnel about 6am so hoping that's him gone in to sleep for his bedtime! 3&4th video is the same 🦔 a couple nights earlier at the #geordiehoggieshotel so I think he is a regular and I'm hoping he's made my garden his home in the the travel lodge ❤️🦔🛖 I think he's a male as think it's the same one in my last post with the 🍆🥰😂 * However, little bit concerned he looks like he's got ticks above his left eye. So it's really cheered me up this week seeing the hoggies in my garden after what happened at the weekend! ❤️🦔🌈✨🦔💔 First two videos are of mrs blackbird and wor magpie at my old feeding station, my first ever attempt at one last year. The 🦔 still use it but seems the birds have figured out it's there this year, so I decided to try an old rag to cover the entrance! It's seemed to of put them off a bit, made them a bit more nervous 😂 ❤️ but luckily the wor geordie hoggies are clever enough to figure it out!!! ❤️🦔 Last video is from when I was trying to figure out their route in and out of my garden as I'd noticed flattening in the growth into neighbouring gardens under my gooseberry plant and bingo! Thwarted by restrictions over the last two years, some of the Hedgehog Rescue team were finally able to get together, with wonderful hosting by Julie F, who opened her beautiful home and garden to us. We celebrated our many successful releases under the guiding hand of Yvonne Cox, founder and owner of HR, who has run the rescue from the garden of her home for over twenty years. I met this little ball of loveliness today. I feel so privileged working for/with Yvonne and the team at the Hedgehog Rescue hospital and also as a foster carer. It's not just helping hedgehogs that I love, although I do, it's being part of a team of like minded people who are kind and love animals as much as I do. I had a lovely pre Christmas shift today at the Hedgehog Rescue hospital. It was so busy, with 2 releases and 3 admissions and I met this sweet little hoglet Elfeline, isn't she a cutie pie. By the time I had cleaned out the outside shed hoggies, I had hair full of hay and was wearing 'eau de parfume' of hedgehog. Over the moon to have been featured in an article alongside @chrisgpackham2! The article discusses how to help wildlife in the winter months with my interest being in hedgehogs. Some other tips of how you can help hedgehogs throughout the winter months include: - not leaving nets outside (eg football nets) - leaving the leaves alone, unless they are a hazard. If you need to move them then leave them in a pile, somewhere outside. They are great homes for insects and a good source of food for hedgehogs. - clean food and water bowls daily - clean feeding station weekly - continue to put out food and water for hedgehogs In 2022, I am looking to set up a CIC, so that I can offer hedgehog education programmes. Hedgehog populations are continuing to decline and I hope through education that this inspire people to make small changes to their gardens which will make a huge difference in hedgehog lives. This is Lucky, a hedgehog I had to rescue the other week. He was out in daylight and British wild hedgehogs shouldn't be out in daylight, if they are it's usually because they're hypothermic. He was trying to escape from the box here, he was a lot warmer by now as I'd been putting a hot water bottle in with him. A lady from a proper rescue place came and took him as sadly I am too ill to care for them myself, he was covered in ticks which make them anaemic. I've had loads coming all summer, nearly hibernation time now. As i speak there's one in a box behind me on my drive making a bed with the leaves, pulling them in to the box.
