It's National Hedgehog Day today! To celebrate I'm sharing my painting which I completed last January. The original has now sold but prints of this little chappie are available. Here's a bit of information about the origins of the tradition. I've also shared @cuan_wildlife_rescue s top tips on how to help our spikey friends 🦔 History of National Hedgehog Day National Hedgehog Day is a Roman tradition preceding the modern ‘Groundhog Day’. While groundhogs are native to North America, various animals have been used in Europe to help predict the end of winter and the coming of spring, including the hedgehog. The Ancient Roman tradition passed down into other European folklore, in particular in Ireland. If a hedgehog was seen at the start of February it was thought to be a sign of good weather and a promise of warmer days, whereas a no-show from hedgehogs meant winter was sure to continue for several more weeks. In hindsight, this may not have been an especially reliable method of weather forecasting, especially given that hedgehogs tend to hibernate from November through to the middle of March! What to do if you disturb a hibernating hedgehog 🦔 A hedgehog that has gone into hibernation uses up valuable body fats if they are disturbed. Not long home from a much needed and long overdue catch-up with my Aunt. While there, my Aunt had a young male hog admitted to the small Hedgehog rescue she runs, this time of year is pretty busy with hoglets born late that require overwintering due to not having the sufficient fat reserves to sustain them through hibernation. And then there are adult Hogs that have made full recovery from injury that are ready for soft release. Sad day today -whilst supervising our poorly cat Django outside noticed shindiznoo out and closer look realised he must have had accident / been attacked by fox or cat ( not ours) or something else while we were away - he was fine when we went away - but had clear injuries to his right eye and leg and was out in day and wobbly - contacted hedgehog preservation society who gave me a number of hedgehog friendly vet - they were closed but Coventry PDSA emergency clinic were able to take him. They were fantastic- I’ve rung just and his injuries are such he can’t be rehabilitated back to our garden but if he survives will go to a hedgehog rescue. Our late night visitor came again last night! 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔❤️❤️❤️. Unfortunately he arrives at the same time we put the dogs out before we go to bed so need to devise a plan to prevent any scaring of the hedgehog. We do know if he is around due to the mad sniffing the dogs suddenly do so that’s helpful. . I think he’s a youngster even though he’s huge as he seems a little inexperienced. Currently making a home for him & well as a hedgehog highway that directs him away from the road at that back of the house. We live in Exmoor so it’s very quiet, the road at the front is mainly used by walkers, cyclists & riders. However the road at the back is known for its picturesque views at the top so busier so will direct him away from there. Currently landscaping the garden so will make a quiet hedgehog friendly area for him. It’s really important to try and increase the hedgehog numbers. They’re now listed as vulnerable with their numbers decreased by about 75% since the 1950s.😢. The population is now thought the be less than a million. The good news is that in some areas, this decline has levelled off. The bad news is that is only in some areas, not all & has only levelled off & not increased, If you want to know more about what you can do to help the them & make your garden hedgehog friendly @thehedgehogsociety has lots of information.
I help out at rescues in the North East & I foster Hedgehogs, doing my bit to help save them. They are amazing unique little creatures which are vulnerable to extinction. It is sad to think we have had them on this planet for 15 million years yet in a few years we may no longer have them at all. However there seems to be more awareness lately & of how people can help them. Leaving wild areas in your garden, leaves, compost heaps & wood piles which are ideal for the mini beasts they forage for. A hedgehog house & or a feeding station in your garden with dried kitten biscuits & a shallow dish of water. If you have a pond please leave a ramp or area easy for them to get out if they were to fall in. Please drive slow around your local area/ estates in the evenings as hedgehogs tend to get run over so easily. They have no fight or flight response so will just freeze or curl up. Holes in your fences (13cm x 13cm )are a great way for them to get from garden to garden. They can travel a mile or so in an evening. Hedgehog close up We found this beautiful animal in our garden under a bush one afternoon last week. I carefully picked her up (wearing gardening gloves) and checked her over for any injuries or signs of illness. She ate some soft cat food (not fish flavoured) and drank some water before setting down in a hay filled box in the quiet darkness of the downstairs loo. Day 175/365 Hedgehog close up We found this beautiful animal in our garden under a bush one afternoon last week. I carefully picked her up (wearing gardening gloves) and checked her over for any injuries or signs of illness. She ate some soft cat food (not fish flavoured) and drank some water before setting down in a hay filled box in the quiet darkness of the downstairs loo. Aiming to highlight the problems our hedgehogs have and how you can help them. 🐾 How can you help our precious hedgehogs? 🦔 Hedgehog Highways are an access hole that only needs to be 13cm x 13cm, to allow hedgehogs to roam from garden to garden. Sadly our modern gardens are like fortresses nowadays and (clue being in their name!) they are not used to navigating fences. Did you know that a hedgehog can travel up to 2km each night looking for food? They can be forced out onto our roads without hedgehog highways. 🦔 Offer food and water to hedgehogs in the evenings. (NOT milk!). Loaf / biscuit cat or dog food that does not contain fish is perfect. Mealworms should only be used sparingly or not at all as they offer very little nutrition. They can fill up on too many and get bone disease. 🦔 Keep wild patches in your garden with nice piles of leaves or logs for hiding places. Or place a suitable hedgehog house somewhere secluded. (Not the small wicker ones). 🦔 If you have a pond of any size, create a 'beach' area or secure ramp area for hedgehogs to climb out of the pond if they fall in.

On 9 November last year I took a 285g hedgehog to my local rescue as she would not have survived the winter. On Saturday I released her (called her Storm) back into my garden. I didn’t really see her as she was in the container covered in shredded newspaper when I left her. I love hedgehogs so when I saw this cute little thing in a shop in Totnes I couldn’t resist… On reading on the Hedgehog Preservation Society’s website about where to site them I have placed it with the entrance facing South as they don’t like cold winds (who does?!) and at the back of the large bed against the wall with some dried leaves inside. Once cold has got to them, they start to shut down. There is very little movement and if left, they may die. My neighbour found this small hedgehog in her garden yesterday. I have looked after it overnight and am taking it to the rescue. It only weighs 295g and would not survive the winter. It’s been eating and drinking so I think it’s only it’s size which is the problem.
