Please keep an eye out tired bees-especially this morning after a sharp frost. I found a little honey bee first thing who definitely should have been in the hive and not out in the cold. I put it on a window ledge in the sun and gave it some sugar water. I was just minding my own business, staring into the sky & day dreaming, when this tiny fella appeared. He didn’t appear hurt but he clearly couldn’t fly properly yet. He was just sat, startled on the pavement. The best thing to do with babies is to leave them be as parents are usually near by, but unfortunately, this guy was too near the road to be left so I ushered him to the nearest bit of grass & foliage for safety. Sadly our neighbours are not cautious in their cars & there are cats about so I didn’t want him to get run over or worse! The males don’t have stingers and not aggressive (because they have no hive to protect). Females have stingers but are not aggressive either. There are 1600 different kinds of native bees in California. Only the honeybee (who was brought to America in 1622 by the European colonists) builds enormous hives with well-organized family groups.
