In 1954, a Norwegian company completed the freighter Bow Santos. She was 4,900 tons, 420 ft in length and could make 15.5 knots. She served under the Norwegian flag for 7 years until being sold to a French company in 1961 and renamed Vera Cruz. In this new company she served until 1976 when she was sold to Singapore Islands Line (who’d have guessed, a company in Singapore) and renamed Bukom Island. Unfortunately the waters she was to sail was teaming with intense storms, some might say greater than that of the North Atlantic in intense regularity. By the beginning of summer in 1977, a tropical depression forming in the western side of the Indian Ocean quickly formed into a tropical storm. By June 11th it was rated a category 1 cyclone, dubbed Masirah later, going north then making a hard line west toward the Arabian Peninsula. Bukom Island was underway to Singapore at the time and, on June 12th, was caught off guard by the storm. I suppose her navigation crew expected it to continue north into India and Pakistan, however when it turned west it must have been a surprise as they went right into the eye of the storm. There the strongest winds, up to 75-80 mph were present, battering the old and small ship. A leak developed and she took a list, which in a storm is bad news with waves throwing the ship around. Finally the call was sent to abandon ship and her crew took to lifeboats and life rafts.
