Hauled out today on the biggest travel-lift we've ever been on! Hoonah has a 220 ton lift, capable of lifting boats much much larger than ours. We have a lot of work to do - bottom paint, shaft seal, cutlass bearing, a whole bunch of thru-hull replacements, a transducer replacement, prop greasing, prop paint, sand strut, etc. It's going to be a very busy and tiring week. I knock off one of my bucket lists by having the opportunity to sail in the iconic ocean of Busan, South Korean sea. Sailing feels like you are reconnecting how our ancestors traveled. Don’t poke fun; I felt a little bit like a fisherman when I helped hoist the mainsail! It’s also really exhilarating to be at the mercy of the elements: To move forward, one must adapt to the wind and not the other way around. It’s a challenging sport that requires forethought and a lot of patience. Oh, the patience! The incredible quality that I do not possess. There’s a weird feeling when you haven’t sailed in a while. When the boat lists meaning, it tilts as the wind moves in the sails; the feeling can be a bit scary. I asked myself a few questions: Will the boat tip over, will I slip, and will I fall into the water? I was reassured that a keel was weighing almost a ton under the boat, preventing it from tipping over. PHEW! When it came to falling in the water, it was up to me to be careful! If I had to summarise my impressions of sailing: it’s a challenging sport that can give you a hundred different sensations. Just got back from an incredibly epic 2 week polar cruise from the far north of Alaska all the way to Victoria Canada with ponant 🛳️ We got the opportunity to see so much of Alaska that usually no one gets to see - from Nome to the remote Pribilof Islands, to Dutch Harbor, Kodiak, Icy Bay and bunch of stops in between. We saw icebergs, calving glaciers, streams filled with salmon, Kodiak bears, more whales than we could count, remote mountain ranges towering up to 18,000 ft, and thousands of miles of desolate coastline. So stoked to share all the video content I shot from this trip - but for now these photos shot / edited by Nicole and I will have to do!
