Along Upper Bukit Timah Road, stand three shopping centres in a row. These are Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, Beauty World Centre, and Beauty World Plaza. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The name Beauty World was not coined up on a whim, but in fact, was named after what once stood directly opposite these three shopping centres. Beauty World was built in 1947, but the story of the place goes further back. Before the war, the area was simply rural land, occupied by a few attap houses and plantations. During the war, the place was in need of rebuilding due to the damage, and two enterprising businessmen got permission to set up Dai Dong Ah Sai Gai Amusement Park (translated from Cantonese as Greater East Asia World). However, after the war, the amusement park went into disrepair, and the then proprietor got permission to convert it into a market place. That was how Beauty World Market came about in 1947. Because of its prior existence as an amusement park, the name Beauty World was chosen, in reference to said past existence. There were then quite a number of amusement parks with the name World in it. Gay World, Happy World, and New World. 1/2

Spider conch (Lambis lambis) This goggly-eyed spider conch is a common species sighted on our shores as well.It is identified by the large cone shaped shell with 6 spines on the flared lip. It also has a green body with white spots. While the underside may be pearly with a pinkish orange colouration, the top side is usually encrusted(barnacles, algae,sponges etc.)Which allows it to blend it well with its environment.
