Deal count remained stable across the three months, with the average deal size closing out at $3.67 million for the quarter ending. Logistics startups raised the highest amount in funding, $151 million, compared to other sectors. The 3rd-largest producer of soda ash in the world has reported a ₹841-crore net loss in the quarter, as per a filing. The net loss stemmed from a one-time loss from its UK operations. In the same period, a year ago, the company had announced a ₹692 crore profit. Notably, this was the first quarterly loss reported by the company in 9 years. It has also declared a dividend of ₹15. It has been reported that the company, for the fiscal ending March 31, 2024, has recognised a non-cash write-down of assets. These add up to ₹963 crore. This has been declared as an exceptional loss in the UK soda ash and bicarb operations. Other statistics showed that in Q4, the company’s revenue dropped 21.1 percent to ₹3,475 crore. In the year-ago period the same was ₹4,407 crore. Tata Chemicals EBITDA was reported at ₹443 crore, which had dropped from ₹965 crore in the year-ago period and EBITDA margin was also down at 12.8 percent versus 21.9 percent in the year-ago period. The company said that the reason behind this performance was the drop in soda ash demand in Europe and low pricing outlook. The break up for the amount of ₹963 crore comes from the write down (non-cash) of the cash generating unit and also spans property, plant and equipment that add up to ₹821 crore. To this has been added ₹122 crore for capital work-in-progress, ₹4 crore for right-of-use assets and finally ₹16 crore for other assets, linked to the UK group. Tata Chemicals is experiencing reduced demand for soda ash (mainly used to reduce the melting point of silica to produce glass, along with the soap and detergent industries) which constitutes two-thirds of its total sales volume. This decline is attributed to the increasing attractiveness of caustic soda in the silicate market due to falling prices. The Anil Agrawal-led Vedanta Ltd on Thursday reported a 27.21 per cent year-on-year (YoY) drop in consolidated net profit (attributable to owners of Vedanta) at Rs 1,369 crore for the March quarter compared with Rs 1,881 crore in the same quarter last year. The consolidated revenue from operations fell 6.14 per cent YoY to Rs 34,937 crore from Rs 37,225 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Vedanta said sales were flattish despite lower LME and exchange rate fluctuations. Ebitda for the quarter fell 4 per cent YoY to Rs 8,969 crore. Ebitda was up 3 per cent sequentially, mainly driven by higher volume and structural cost saving initiatives across businesses partially offset by lower LME and exchange rate fluctuations. Following its quarterly results, shares of Vedanta were trading 0.26 per cent lower at Rs 382.25 on BSE. Vedanta said its net debt stood at Rs 56,338 crore, down 10 per cent QoQ. Net debt to Ebitda improved to 1.5 times against 1.7 times in the December quarter. Liquidity improved 21 per cent sequentially, with cash and cash equivalent of Rs 15,421 crore, Vedanta said in a press release. For the March quarter, Vedanta said it generated robust free cash flow (pre capex) of Rs 9,948 crore, up 131 per cent QoQ. Executive Director Mr Arun said: “FY 2023-24 has been a remarkable year for Vedanta. We have achieved record production across our key businesses, a testament to our consistent focus on operational excellence. This focus, coupled with our commitment to cost leadership, ensured strong margins even during a challenging commodity market. The acquisition, executed through a share purchase agreement, will see Happiest Minds obtaining 100 percent equity interest in PureSoftware, thereby making it a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company. PureSoftware Technologies, with a paid-up capital of Rs 3.23 crore and a turnover of Rs 351 crore for fiscal 2024, will be acquired through an upfront cash consideration of Rs 635 crore. Additionally, a deferred consideration of up to Rs 144 crore will be payable at the end of FY25, subject to the achievement of set performance targets, Happiest Minds said in a disclosure to the exchanges. Indigo Airline's parent company Interglobe and Archer Aviation are going to launch air taxi in the country. Air taxi service in India may start from 2026. After this, passengers will be able to complete the journey from Delhi to Gurugram in just 7 minutes by spending just Rs 2 to 3 thousand. Food delivery giant Zomato has received with a GST demand and penalty order totaling Rs 11.81 crore for the period of July 2017 to March 2021, the company said in a regulatory filing on April 19. The order is split into a GST demand of Rs 5.9 crore and a penalty of the same amount. The order was issued by the Additional Commissioner of Central Goods and Services Tax, Gurugram, for export services provided by Zomato to its foreign subsidiaries between July 2017 and March 2021. “Order passed under Section 74(1) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 read with Section 20 of Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 for INR 5,90,94,889/- with applicable interest (not quantified) and penalty of INR 5,90,94,889/-,” the company said in the filing. Despite Zomato’s attempts to clarify the allegations with supporting documents and legal precedents, the authorities passed the order. The company has announced its intention to appeal against the order before the appropriate appellate authority. “The demand order has been received confirming demand of GST on export services provided by the Company to its subsidiaries located outside India during the period July 2017 to March 2021 by upholding that such services do not fulfill the conditions for the supply to qualify as export of service under GST. Shoppers are turning their backs on department stores amid rising prices, official figures suggest. The volume of sales in department stores fell 3.8% last month, according to official figures. Overall, sales stalled in March, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, with no growth at all from February. Rising prices have been blamed for many retailers having a hard start to the year. Heather Bovill, senior statistician for the ONS, said that hardware stores, furniture shops, petrol stations and clothing stores all saw a rise in sales last month. “However, these gains were offset by falling food sales, and in department stores where retailers say higher prices hit trading,” she added. Figures released this week showed inflation - the pace at which prices rise - has fallen to its lowest rate in two-and-a-half years.

HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd on Thursday posted a 14.76 per cent jump in its fourth-quarter standalone profit (Q4 FY24 PAT), at around Rs 412 crore, from Rs 359 crore in the year-ago period. The private insurer’s net premium income climbed 5.46 per cent to Rs 20,488 crore in Q4 FY24 compared to Rs 19,427 crore in the corresponding period last year. HDFC Life has also declared a dividend of Rs 2 per share. The stock was last seen trading 1.19 per cent higher at Rs 611.65. HDFC Life said, “Our new business margins are 26.3 per cent. Value of new business is Rs 3,501 crore, implying a 2-year CAGR of 14 per cent. Embedded value stands at Rs 47,468 crore, with an operating return on embedded value of 17.5 per cent.” We have delivered a strong profit after tax of Rs 1,569 crore, implying a YoY increase of 15 per cent, fuelled by 18 per cent increase in profit emergence from back book, it added. Solvency continues to be healthy at 187 per cent, HDFC further said.
