Cactus Market ATX is this Saturday, May 11th! 🌵🌵🌵🎉 A huge sale of cactus and succulents (and more) is coming up, and I’ve finally finished my dragon fruit and night-blooming cereus inventory. I’ve also completed the final pruning sessions of my largest plants, adding new and low-inventory varieties. Three large trellises need to come out of the winter greenhouse. But after some repairs, I can’t wait to get them outside in the spring sun. It’s been rainy over the past week, and the plants are soaking up the rainwater. I spotted flowers on my Ecuador Palora, Peruvian Apple Cactus, Epiphyllum Hookeri, and Epiphyllum Granada White. I also recently discovered my large (yet fragile) Albino Ocamponis blooming for the first time! I’ll have the following dragon fruit and columnar cactus varieties: Zamorano Purple Haze Ecuador Palora Chimera Albino Ocamponis Edgar’s Baby Harrisia Bonplandii Triangle Cactus (Acanthocereus Tetragonus) Peruvian Apple Cactus Monstrose Peruvian Apple Cactus White-Fleshed NOIDs (no identification) I also have named but un-confirmed varieties that haven’t produced flowers or fruits (but might this year): Halley’s Comet David Bowie Vietnam Jania Selenicereus Macdonaldiae AX Bruni Delight I’ll have two epiphyllum varieties too! Cracked texture pots are coming along nicely for the @cactusmarketatx in two weeks! These two pots are 4.5 and 6.5 inches tall, 8 inch diameter. Collected gravel is added to the clay surface for texture. The exteriors are glazed with a mix of waste ash and oxides, the interiors are unglazed. Oh, boy! I went to a cactus sale today! 🌵🌵🎉 Cactus Market ATX hosted an event at (my enabling cactus store, lol) East Austin Succulents Nursery today. It was so cool to see the various vendors across the local area and states and others who love cacti! I came home with a 'Boobie Cactus' and four Myrtillocactuses, which are great for grafting! Lately, I’ve been preparing or buying new rootstock cacti. The itch to graft cacti is getting stronger each week. The weather has been cooling recently. It’s still hot but not as oppressive as the constant 100 to 105-degree days. Next week should be in the lower 90s (hey! That’s a cool down! lol). I’ve wanted to graft different cacti together all year. But the record-breaking summer heat was too dangerous for the plants. I’ve put my plants in survival mode: I protected and fertilized them if they were under the shade cloth or kept them watered while they were in the shade and rooting. I’ll see my dragon fruits tomorrow, and many were producing flower buds last weekend, some for the first time this year. One for the first time in two years! My plants are reacting to the cooler weather, added fertilizer, and shortening daylight. I’m also preparing to make five new 20-gallon dragon fruit trellises and getting my winter greenhouse ready. I plan to individually pot the plants I bought today and use the Myrtillocactus as rootstocks. I’m technically still selling dragon fruit cuttings, but I hope to do more local plant markets in November. The heat did a number on my cuttings, and I want to nurse them to health.
