@midlifepsychosis Sarah Grounds is a visual artist specialising in areas of photography and performance. Her work is a mix of self-documentation and candid documentary work of life living on an eco-farm in South West Wales. She subtly explores the politics of modern society and her own feelings about being a woman. Sarah uses many experimental techniques, exploring paint, movement, sound, digital photography and performance. The resulting work is an eclectic mix of video, still image and installation, interlinking through themes of politics, community and personal honesty. Forming a bridge between photography and fine art painting, Sarah pushes the boundaries of documentary photography, viewing her self-portraiture work as the ultimate form of documentation. Little moments of happiness these days 🌺 Unemployment is teaching me a lot about myself, about patience, about my strength and value in spite of all the uncertainty. I wouldn’t say I’m grateful for it, but I am content in this chapter of life and seeing the beauty in the small moments. I want to be more transparent about this phase in life because I think it’s important to talk about being #unemployed and how there are real people being affected en masse by these large media corporations’ efforts to “cut costs”. I know I’m far from the only person feeling the weight of this suffering industry. I personally know so many talented and incredible people who have been forced to make some difficult decisions. It’s hard not to feel inadequate or less than in the face of so much rejection. People have written original Haikus about moments in time, experiences they had, about love, loss, a beautiful sunset, the wing song of a bird. I have the best story! I went into @blainesartak today to pick up a painting I’d had in their recent acrylic show. As I was walking out a man held the door for me and said “I have a painting by that artist too.” Now, I did some quick calculations 😂 I’ve only sold one real painting up here. My girlfriend tried to venmo me at midnight for another painting & I told her we’d have to wrestle in the street in our pajamas before Id let my best friend of 30 yrs buy a painting from me. So that leaves the White Raven. Back to the man holding the door for me. I said “I am the artist.” He stopped and looked at me & told me he had a friend who’d asked him to go to the White Raven show at @dosmanosgallery & he’d fallen in love with the painting. He then went on to tell me that he used to own Blaine’s. Rewinding again, growing up in Anchorage Blaine’s was THE & ooonnnllly art store & it was lofty. It was more like a museum to me. I dreamed silent dreams of ever being able to justify a reason to really go to Blaine’s. Those were “capital A” Artists. I’m kind of dying with pride & disbelief & gratitude that I got to meet him & close the loop on where my White Raven went. 🙏❤️ Friday I have three paintings going to @pennyroyaltyalaska for the month of May. This Friday is @ancfirstfriday so I’ll be at my studio from 5-8pm. And because life happens to us especially when we are off track the message from this painting Is to “…focus on creating your dream now. What you think now becomes your reality. Stay present.” 🙏 I have been off track 🙏💔 “I have come to learn that losing the track is not the end of the trail, but rather a space of preparation. The whole process is contained here as a pure potentiality. Prepare yourself to hear the call, invite the unknown, look for the first track, tune into the instrument of the body, and learn to see the track amidst many that brings you to life. All of these dynamics must lie latent in you as you look for the next track.”

AMRITA DHILLON | DKS Stipendiatin 2023/24 Ausstellung „things fall apart" mit Candy Bassas 8.5. – 5.7.2024 | #dksgalerie Schlüterstraße 71, Berlin-Charlottenburg "Als Inderin komme ich aus einer Kultur, in der soziale Normen, Kollektivismus und Konformismus eine große Rolle spielen – und in der der Wunsch nach Individualität argwöhnisch betrachtet wird. Diesen Normierungsdruck habe ich immer als sehr beklemmend und einschränkend empfunden. Malerei ist das diametrale Gegenteil davon: Sie ist frei. Zu malen, ist für mich daher auf einer ganz persönlichen Ebene vor allem eine Befreiung von sozialer Kontrolle – und dadurch eine Bestätigung meiner Individualität als Mensch im Allgemeinen (sowie als Frau im Besonderen). Ich möchte durch mein Malen einen Kontrapunkt zu gesellschaftlichen Vereinfachungen und Kategorisierungen setzen. Meine Gemälde haben ihren Ursprung oft in alten Familienfotos, gefundenen Bildern und Filmszenen, die ich verfremde, verschönere, verzerre oder verkläre. Ich arbeite mit unterschiedliche Medien wie Druckgraphik, Aquarell, Ölmalerei und Fotografie, die sich in meiner Praxis häufig gegenseitig beeinflussen. Die Elemente, die ich in meiner Bildsprache verwende, haben sich nicht sehr verändert, aber die menschliche Figur scheint das zentrale Thema zu sein, und die Natur ist ein Element, das die Protagonisten dieser Geschichte umarmt, um Symbolik zu implizieren. Unter dem sozialen Druck der heutigen Zeit, in der unsere Umgebung durch eine Frage des Überlebens bedroht ist, wird unser Wohlergehen ständig in Frage gestellt, indem uns ein Gefühl von Schuld und Angst vermittelt wird. Die brutale Ideologie scheint nie aufgegeben zu haben und regiert eine Gesellschaft, die einst die Freiheit gekostet hat. All dies weckt eine rastlose Ungewissheit, die sich in meinen Bildern widerspiegelt." Candy Bassas Candy Bassas (*1992 in Barcelona, Spanien) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
