Camp Kiwanee, today and over half a century ago. BB and I met in 1970 at a Massachusetts Camp Fire Girls Camp in Hanson Massachusetts. I was a camper there as a child and worked there in 67, 68, 69, 70, 71 as a counselor and head of Puppetry. BB was head of Tennis and Archery. Every wedding photographer tries to find that one thing that separates them from their competition when it comes to attracting clients and, for me, one of those things is fun candid moments at a wedding reception. But I always feel awkward taking credit for capturing these moments because, in truth, I can only do so much on a wedding day. It's up to a bride and groom, and their friends and family members, to have a wedding reception worth documenting. And then there are couples like Elizabeth and Spencer, who simply couldn't be more my type of bride and groom in this regard. Elizabeth and Spencer were married back in October at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson, Massachusetts and I knew going into their wedding that their reception was going to be off-the-wall rowdy and fun … because I saw many of these same guests rocking out at Elizabeth's maid of honor's wedding one month earlier. Still, I had no idea just how crazy this reception would be. Whether it was full-throttle 80s and 90s hits, full dance-floor line dances or even some stuff that might have seemed out of place at other receptions (Like the pole dancing, lap dances and partial stripping that took place), this reception was absolutely bonkers and SO MUCH FUN. By far one of the biggest challenges I face on a wedding day is finding a way to capture a bride and groom's personality in their portraits. This is especially difficult if I've never worked with the couple before and have limited time to find the way they “tick.” Luckily my latest couple, Elizabeth and Spencer, are so unapologetically themselves that all it took was a few minutes to see the way they interact to know exactly how I wanted their portraits to look: Fun. Silly. And full of laughter. I can think of no better way to sum up this bride and groom. Or their wedding as a whole really. Elizabeth and Spencer were married back in October at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson, Massachusetts and while their wedding was one of the most beautiful I photographed all year, it was also easily the silliest and the one that took itself the least seriously. And I adored them because of it. Their formal portraits were more of the same and in the 15 or 20 minutes or so that we had together, I thought we did a great job capturing their spirit and bringing their authentic personalities to life. There are a lot of skills necessary to becoming a good wedding photographer. You need to know how to tell a story. You need people skills. You need to adapt to each and every situation you may encounter. Above all, though, you need to learn how to trust your instincts. And that's why I knew within minutes of talking to Elizabeth and Spencer for the first time back in 2019 that I didn't just want to be their wedding photographer, I NEEDED to be their wedding photographer. Elizabeth and Spencer, who were married back in October at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson, Massachusetts, are the very definition of "my kind of couple." They're fun. They sweet. They have a beautiful love story. More than anything else, though, they're a little bit awkward. In the best way. Elizabeth and Spencer are unapologetically quirky and I adore them so much because of it because, well, so am I. And their fall, rustic wedding was easily one of the most beautiful I photographed this year. Both for the rich, vibrant colors AND the oddball, silly and awkward moments that made the day so strange and fun.
