So often when we see the popular 'trainers' on social media, they are talking about how to 'fix problems' with your dog, about how to 'fix' their bad behaviour and usually promising quick results. When a caregiver is struggling with an aspect of life with their dog the idea of fixing that problem can seem tempting. When we look at what they are actually doing, a lot of it involves tools and punishment. And yes, it seems to work very quickly (although often a lot of what is going on is hidden) as the behaviour stops. The difficulty starts to come when we look at the dog with an educated eye. We will see signs of stress like lip licking, yawning, the white of the eyes showing. The dogs are often leaning away from the trainer trying to create some space. This tells us that the dog is stressed, uncomfortable and wants to get away. The other issue is tools and punishment don't teach the dog what to do, only stops the unwanted behaviour. This is behaviour suppression and, while it appears to work for a while, it can lead to a whole new set of problems. The cause has not been addressed, any issues triggering that behaviour are still there. That means the behaviour is likely to come back, or there will be a degree of 'fallout' where things can get much worse because they are still struggling. A good ethical trainer or behaviourist will take the time to find out what’s causing the behaviour and consider the best way forward. This might involve referring the dog to their vet for a health check. Maybe simply setting things up so we can show the dog a more appropriate form of behaviour for that situation. It might involve a careful programme of behaviour modification to help the dog feel better about something. It could be managing the situation so that the dog doesn’t feel the need to show the problematic behaviour. And many other options, none of which are attempting ‘fixing’ the dog, and none involving discomfort, pain, or fear. For the sake of your dog and the relationship you have (and want to have) with them, if a potential trainer of behaviourist promises they will fix your dog, walk away. It's not worth the risk to your dog and the bond you share with them.

A Saturday morning treat for me (and Bobbi!) A cuppa back in bed after everyone (except me!) has had brekky, with a good book 📚 (a really good book actually - definitely recommend!) I like mixing up our routine sometimes - it means they don't always expect early morning exercise or anticipate exactly what is going to happen. Dogs learn patterns quickly - useful when they are beneficial behaviourally and functionally, tricky when they are not 🙈 I talk about this a lot with my clients - 'X does not always mean Y'...... AND I think about it a lot with my own team! At the moment, we are working on...... Front door opening does not mean you exit (we have become a bit sloppy 🙈). Instead, front door opening means just wait inside the hallway..... X (door) does not mean Y (exit), it means 'wait' (Z!) 🖐 Very much a work in progress 🤣 What 'X does not mean Y' are you working on with your dog? And if you'd like #CanineCoaching where we think about applying this to real life, check out my classes that start on Monday May 6th in Nottinghamshire- PM for details🐾 #DogTraining #DogTrainingNotts

It can be all too easy to look at a behaviour, particularly one that we find problematic, as an isolated thing that just occurs, or is put down to false and outdated ideas like 'dominance' or 'stubbornness'. Think of behaviour as a symptom - underlying that behaviour there is an emotion driving that behaviour. Behaviours don't happen just 'because', there is always a reason for them and so it's up to us to learn how to understand what they are trying to tell us so we can work out what that emotion is. And at the root of it all there will be a need. Something that is causing the dog to feel that particular emotion and so lead them to show the behaviour that we are seeing. Once we have discovered the emotion the dog is feeling, we can work out what the dog needs and help them to get whatever that may be. The three pictures here give an example: Behaviour: the dog is barking at something. If you look at their posture and body language the body is leaning back, away from what they are barking at. The ears are back, whiskers flared, and eyes fixed on something. The front paw is slightly lifted and there is a back paw in the air, and the back end of the dog may be lowered towards the ground a little. Emotion: what the overall picture of the body language is telling us is that the dog is scared of the thing they are barking at, so the emotion they are feeling is fear. Need: What this dog needs is immediate space from the thing that is bothering them, so they can feel relief from that fear and feel safer again. What they need going on is an increased feeling of safety and security, more trust in us to help them if they need it or get them out of a situation if it's too much for them. When we can understand the need and emotion driving the behaviour we can understand our dogs far better and see where they need our help.

Training should never make those involved uncomfortable, anxious, or scared. That includes both human and dog. It can sadly be easy to assume that a trainer is giving the best advice because they are a professional and so must know what they are doing. The thing is that there are trainers who have not kept up to date with how our knowledge and understanding of how dogs learn and their emotional capacity over the last few decades and so, although they think they are doing things correctly, they are causing fear and discomfort to dogs and showing caregivers out of date advice that might harm the relationship between human and dog. Even worse there are those who don't care. They market themselves based on 'quick fixes' and appealing to ego, talking about dominance, needing to be the boss, the 'alpha' or the 'pack leader'. They claim that they are imitating natural behaviour and treating dogs like the 'tame wolves that they are'. Dogs are not wolves - related, yes, but with thousands of years of evolution to live alongside humans that distance them from their modern cousins. Dogs do not operate a strict hierarchy, there is no set breeding pair (which is what in fact defines the alpha wolves in wolf packs) and, perhaps most importantly, dogs know that we are not dogs. We are a part of a family unit together, but we are not the same, so dogs do not think of us in those terms. And, if we look at the definition of dominance as being the one in charge, the one who controls access to food and other resources, it quickly becomes clear that in human homes, we are most definitely the dominant individuals. Our dogs' lives are short and our time with them precious, so if you find your trainer is making either of you uncomfortable, walk away. Find a trainer who works with behaviour in a gentle way, not using fear and suppression behaviours by force, but who shows the dog what we would like instead.

Let’s talk about HOPE 💫 Hope, to me, is a belief or trust in positive outcomes being possible for us. It is the expectation or belief that things will get better, even in difficult or uncertain circumstances. It is a sense of optimism. A trust that what feels impossible is only temporary. Only temporary… 🥹 Hope can BE the light at the end of the tunnel that guides us through difficult times and helps us overcome challenges. ✨ It is easy to lose it and not even notice that process… Hope can be a powerful tool for healing and personal growth… and to keep your motivation ALIVE! When people have a sense of hope, they tend to have a better quality of life, can be more resilient, and can have healthy coping mechanisms. It allows people to look towards the future with a sense of optimism & positivity, trust & even surrender, rather than becoming overcome by present difficulties. It can allow us to SURRENDER to now, without grasping to the future needing to look a certain way. Hope is imperative on your training journey. 🥰 I have lost it and found it again, again, and again… and it feels like I’m coming back up for air every time. If you’re out of touch with HOPE - comment #hope below with a tid bit of where you’re lacking it & I’ll send you a loving affirmation. ❤️ Ps - if you need ongoing support, our Emotional Support Group “Connected Companions” is tonight, an affordable as-needed community to help you find HOPE & feel understood. A common dismissive misperception of reward-based training is that it simply involving tossing food to the dog when they get something right. There are several issues with this, but here we are going to look at one - the fact that it must always involve food. While food is a great reward to use and hugely motivating for many dogs, food is absolutely not the only potential reward that we have. We can offer toys as a reward - one of my dogs loves being thrown a rope toy to rag around and then parade around the area showing it off before coming to request a game. We can use interactive play such as tug (and no, the idea that tug makes dogs aggressive is not true) as a favourite game with one of their people is hugely rewarding to many dogs. We can let the dog have some time to run and explore (where safe to do so and as long as we are not interfering with anyone else in the area). We can use the environment itself to provide rewards. Walk beside me for a few steps and then we'll go over so you can that tree. One of my dogs is quite a sensitive soul and currently an adolescent so things can get very exciting for her quickly. A quiet word of praise and an ear rub is something she finds really rewarding but that also keeps her calm and relaxed. The exact list of rewards we can offer as about as varied as the dogs themselves. They will all have different favourites, even within a group of rewards. My older dog is very food driven and likes almost everything we have offered to him. Topping the list, however, is cold cooked broccoli! Take some time to work with your dog and find as wide a range of different types of things they find rewarding as you can. The more potential rewards we can find, the more variety and interest we can add in to their lives!

It’s easy to get bogged down by the list of things you cannot do with your beloved dog because of their behaviour, preferences or physical limitations. 😅🥹 But what happens if we practice a re-frame here? 💫 What sort of joy or peace would be accessible to us if we looked at things with a silver lining of sorts? 🥰 What happens if their shit-uation is actually in service of what you might subconsciously need? 😛 What is their needs actually mirror your unknown needs? ✨ What happens if they are leading you toward your own path - that might look a little different than you had imagined for yourself? 🙏 Struggling on your training journey? We can help ❤️ 👋 Reach out for our Emotional Support Group or our Connection Coaching online ✨ following the link in the bio. #youvegotthis #selfcare #perspective #dogtraining #dogtrainer #learningfromdogs #therapydog #lifewithdogs #dogmom #canineconnection #selfdevelopment #connectioncoach #doglove #reactivedogsunite #caninecoaching #conciousconnection #dogtherapy #reactiverecovery #dogsandspirituality #doless #reflectionswithdogs #lessonsfromdogs

Separation related problems are so distressing for both the dog and their people and helping a dog who struggles with separation is a long, slow process. When we bring a dog home it is important to help them feel safe and secure in the and with us and only then gradually start teaching them that alone time is nothing they need to stress about. This can be time consuming and awkward to start as it means organising life so that the dog does not need to be left for extended periods before they are ready. The time put in during these early stages is absolutely worth it, however - helping a dog who has developed separation related problems can mean a long time of the dog not being able to be left, and working on helping them to feel comfortable in very small increments (seconds at a time to start) takes a lot of work and effort.

Hii - I’m Chloe, the owner and founder of Remraf Pet Services! Since I was young l’ve always loved animals - both learning about them and also the physical aspect of taking care of them. Starting Remraf in 2018, gave me the opportunity to share my love of animals with pet owners all over the Hertfordshire area and hope I get the chance to meet your wonderful pet/s soon :) After my own dog was attacked at a young age, he became very reactive to other dogs. This made walks miserable and unenjoyable for us both. We were limited to where we could walk and were always having to avoid other people and their dogs! At the time I didn’t know anything about dog behaviour or body language and had absolutely no idea how to go about helping both of us get past these issues. I contacted a couple of local trainers at the time but the advice I was given just didn’t sit right with me and I certainly wasn’t comfortable using any form of corrective tools. We struggled through for a while, but I wanted us to be able to enjoy walks again and go on those all important bonding adventures together. So I took action. I stated to research, to learn as much as possible and teach myself everything I could about dog behaviour, body language and the methods of teaching our dogs. Not only has this enabled me to achieve results with my own dog but has given me the skills and knowledge to pass onto other dog owners who are in the same position I was. Having now taken the path of becoming a canine coach/dog trainer, I have achieved a number of certifications from recognised online courses and am always building on my understanding through continual professional development. What a stunning morning here in Nottinghamshire 🌞 I headed out with some of my team for a long caniplod *mix of canihiking and canicrossing* and explored new routes 🐾 Those routes took us cross country and through two large fields of sheep 🐑 - one full of lambs and their mums 🥰 Thing is..... our dogs (and even human presence) can seriously upset and scare sheep. Your dog might be AMAZING off lead BUT PUT THEM ON LEAD NEAR LIVESTOCK. The farmer and animals will thank you for it 👏 My team and I walked carefully through the fields, giving all sheep a wide berth and I had them on their grab handles, so they were close. Mini and Bobbi both tried to stop for 🐑💩 snacks 🙈 My boys were more interested in finding the footpath so they could run again 🤣 They are all good around livestock (we pick up among sheep during their gundog season) but do I trust them 100% in a different context? No. Plus, there were signs politely asking to keep dogs on leads 👍 Also, locally there was a recent sheep worrying incident, so being proactive and respectful is critical 👍 Finally, it gave me a chance to meander through the ladies with their lambs gently, chatting away to them and telling them how lovely their little ones were ❤️🐑 Leads are good. Leads are proactive management. Let's help keep sheep safe, our dogs safe and our fabulous farmers happy 😊 (Last photo was taken on footpath across open land - no livestock so we were all running, but you can see grab handles) #LeadsOn #LetsTalkAboutLeads #KeepSheepSafe #DogsAndSheep #SheepFarming #CanineCoaching #ApdtTrainer

One of the most important things we can do as caregivers of dogs is to learn their language. With dogs this means learning to interpret their body language. Bites can often happen because a dog has found themselves in a situation where they feel stressed or scared, and it comes to a point where the dog will feel the need to show aggressive behaviours to get themselves the space that they need, culminating in a bite if the earlier signals don't get them that space. If asking for space has not worked for the dog in the past (or worse has been punished), they will move up to the signals that do work and miss out the lower level signals. This is how a bite can seemingly happen 'without warning'. One of the biggest ways we can all contribute to preventing bites is to make sure we understand their body language and how to tell when stress levels are starting to rise, and ensuring that we are always watching when those who can't understand these signals (children, for example) so that people and dogs can all be kept safe.

Wanna know what you can do with your dog when you’re… just sort of… over it? 😜 Tired? Low motivation? Training fatigue? 😜 Me too sometimes… If I’m uninspired - I take the pressure off and go on a long line walk somewhere quiet and play a lot of good old “find it”. I say the cue, toss the treats/kibble into tall grass, let him sniff and let that be my cue to take deep breaths. When you don’t have the mojo to connect with, train or engage your dog on the walk, you probably have a need of YOURS not being met… Maybe you’re tired 😴 Maybe you’ve lost hope 🥹 Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed with life 😟 Maybe you’re annoyed with your dog and they are only gonna get half of what you can usually offer today 🤬 That’s okay! Find some nature, bring some food, do some long line “find it’s”, and call it a day. You’re okay to take short cuts sometimes and put some extra energy into what you need.. 🥰 #selfcare #perspective #dogtraining #dogtrainer #learningfromdogs #therapydog #lifewithdogs #dogmom #canineconnection #selfdevelopment #connectioncoach #doglove #reactivedogsunite #caninecoaching #conciousconnection #dogtherapy #reactiverecovery #dogsandspirituality #doless #reflectionswithdogs #lessonsfromdogs

I’m a human focused trainer. Not because it’s a short cut. Or I’m not super effing good at working with dogs. 😊 But because, after 15 years of helping people help their dogs - I’ve realized that the people need help too. And by helping them - we ARE helping their dogs. 💫 That often our dog’s behaviour is an INVITATION IN US… to pay attention, to nurture, to explore, to get curious, to expand, evolve and grow. 🪞 Helping YOU is helping THEM. And safety is the biggest concern for us & them - we are all animals after all. 🥰 When you show up for you differently, you can show up for your dog differently - and vice versa. ❤️‍🩹 Are you accepting this challenge or off loading your personal development onto your dog? No judgement either way, I’m simply here to ask such questions for your consideration. 💕😜 #perspective #dogtraining #dogtrainer #learningfromdogs #therapydog #lifewithdogs #dogmom #canineconnection #selfdevelopment #connectioncoach #doglove #reactivedogsunite #caninecoaching #conciousconnection #dogtherapy #reactiverecovery #dogsandspirituality #doless #reflectionswithdogs #lessonsfromdogs

19 months ago I became a mum and life changed forever. Not just for me. For my dogs too. I thought I knew what I was getting myself in to…I had no clue. I thought dogs plus baby would be just fine… I had no clue. I had no clue about a lot of things. Still don’t! But I love my dogs and my baby and so we figure things out as we go. It isn’t perfect. It’s often messy. I often apologies and promise to do better next time. But I don’t give up. Even when I have no idea how I’m going to do it. I have faith. And I put one foot in front of the other. I know I am blessed. And I am extremely GRATEFUL 🙏💕 Where there is a will and a WHY, there’s a way. When I’m struggling, I take a deep breath. I take a minute and release the tension with a quick meditation. Then I visualize and reconnect with my why. If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. And if this resonated, drop an emoji in the comments and share with someone who might need it ❤️ #hugyourdog #hugyourbaby #dogandbabies #malonoislover #malinoisofinstagram #caninecoach #caninecoaching #trainwithoutpain

Continuing the Bite Prevention Week theme. Children represent a massive proportion of reported dog bite cases. These pictures, selected from a massive library of similar stock photos of children with dogs, show some of the reasons for this. Humans like physical contact. We're generally huggers, particularly with a gorgeous animal like a dog - that soft coat and gorgeous faces just look perfect for a hug, especially to a child. Dogs are definitely not like us in this way. True, there are some dogs who may enjoy cuddling up with their people, and even like or don't mind hugs. One of my dogs is very much in favour of physical contact. Importantly, however, it is only with the people he chooses. The ones he knows and trusts. Kids often cannot read canine body language. The signs are here in the photographs used of a tense and unhappy dog, but the children in these pictures can't see and interpret them. It's up to us as adults, whether parents, dog caregivers, or both, to make sure that we are educated on canine body language and can see the signs of stress. That we make sure to advocate for the dogs so that they are not put in this position. To make sure that the children around us are educated and taught about the likes and dislikes of dogs. To stop putting children and dogs into potentially dangerous situations for the cute photo or video (the videos of babies propped up against dogs make most behaviour professionals shudder because that is so not fair on either species!) Let's be fair to both dogs and children and use education and understanding to keep children and dogs happy and safe together.

It's Dog Bite Prevention week, and a huge part of preventing bites is understanding canine communication. The dog's whole body is involved in communication but the face in particular can tell us a lot about how that dog is feeling. Being able to recognise the different appearances of the face and how they indicate the dog's inner state in that moment is so, so important. When the face is soft and relaxed, the dog is happy and content with whatever is going on around them. An alert, interested dog is likely also quite happy, focusing on things going on around them. The unsure and uncomfortable dog is starting to struggle with something in their environment. If this facial expression is seen, that dog needs some space and time to feel safe again. If the uncomfortable dog doesn't get the space they need, the dog will move to the warning stage. This is a dog who seriously needs space and who is saying they will escalate if they don't get this space. This is the dog who, if pressed further, will go on to bite. By learning how to tell when a dog is uncomfortable and needs us to back off and give them room, we can massively cut down on the number of bites that occur.

I know very few, if any, dog people who don't look back on their past life with dogs and regret some of the things they did, the choices they made, and the ways they worked with their dogs. I make no secret of the fact I am a crossover trainer. When I was a child Barbara Woodhouse was the Graeme Hall of her day, on the TV all the time and regarded as the expert of the time. Pretty much every dog we saw wore a choke chain (yes, my dogs included) because that was just 'how it's done' and I didn't know any better. The thing is that I started to learn (although, sadly, years later). I learned about canine behaviour and communication, to see how to understand what my dogs were telling me in the moment. How they felt, if they were happy, comfortable, in pain, feeling unsure and stressed. I learned a better way to handle my dogs, with different walking equipment, comfortable and safe for them. I learned how to make sure I avoided putting them into situations they would struggle to deal with. All of these are massively positive things, which have changed my relationships with my dogs and brought us to a whole new understanding. This doesn't mean that it was a comfortable process to go through, this realisation of what I'd been doing wrong. It was by far the opposite and I’ll be honest, there were (a lot of) tears shed over what I’d done. Cognitive dissonance, when you realise the wrongness of how things have been in the past, is a very difficult thing to go through. This is why I don’t judge people who have used these methods in the past but who now want to change. I have little time for the people who carry on using aversive methods with little or no regard for the physical and mental well-being of the dogs in their care. Especially not for the ‘social media training gurus’ who often have little knowledge but a great amount of marketing skills and fool people into thinking that what they are doing is fine. For those who really want to find that better way to live and work with their dogs, my door is always open. No judgement, just help and support for you and your dog while you find that more cooperative and harmonious way. Connection, not corrections.

Our dogs as our mirrors can illuminate what needs our loving attention & what needs our celebration & recognition! 🥰 Think of your least favourite thing about your dog - and ask yourself if it might remind you of pieces of you, or feelings in you that you struggle to accept and embrace. 💕 Ouch - sometimes this realization can be a LOT to sit with. ❤️‍🩹 That part of you might need a little extra loving attention or awareness! ✨ ✨✨ And then ask yourself what your favorite thing about your dog is… the thing you most admire, the thing you can’t get enough of… what you love about their character. 🤨 And reflect - this might be pieces of you being mirrored at you, the parts of YOU that you love, or wish to be more like… the parts of you that have the potential to grow & should be celebrated! 🌱 Learning about yourself through how your dog makes you feel can have great impact on your own self awareness and self development. Shout out to this wee sausage who made some awesome choices today during our session! We have been working on her engagement with her humans and teaching her that although she has a lovely voice, she can offer other behaviours. (And gold star for managing to ignore the wedding going on 💒) ⭐ Misty and Pip were on call today too. Providing some company for the crazy frog whilst working on his recall. Misty showed him that he may as well put those spaniel legs to good use and have a shot on the agility. 🦘 #dachshund #cockerspaniels #caninecoaching #121sessions #dumfriesandgallowaydogs #caninebehaviour

There is a very good reason why we say never punish a growl. If a dog is punished for growling they may well stop growling, but that doesn't change the fact that they are extremely uncomfortable or scared in that situation. Without the growl to be able to warn us, they are left with little choice but to escalate their warning signals to us. Perhaps even forced to the point where they feel feel their only option to escape a situation is to bite.

Here's a great list of some yummy, refreshing "snacks" you can share with you furry friend. This list isn't "complete" but just a few common things we may have in the fridge this season. As always, you know your pup best and different allergies, stomach issues etc play a big part of what some pets may or may not tolerate (even if it is a safe option). I also realize some choose to not give any human food, that's ok too. We each do what we believe is best. What fruit/veggie snack is your pet's favorite? Behaviour is INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION. Next time you think your dog is “stubborn” for not going into the car, or for stopping on the walk, or refusing to do something you want them to - STOP 🛑 & LISTEN 👂 Press pause for a hot second 🔥 to try to interpret what they are communicating to you. Dogs do things for a reason. Rather then rushing along. Pushing them to hurry up. Or asking them to stop doing something. Like I used to… Get lovingly curious about WHY they might be doing it. 💕🧐 Cedar used to bite the leash and my arm before going back inside our building… and avoids jumping in the car… I finally realized the stairs/jumping were hurting him. Avoiding going inside was avoiding pain. And taking his pain out on me (and causing me pain haha) was INFORMATION that I needed to EXPLORE with kindness. ✨ Understanding your dog is the gateway to patience, compassion & connection. ❤️ 📸: @angelastearnsphotography #perspective #dogtraining #dogtrainer #learningfromdogs #therapydog #lifewithdogs #dogmom #canineconnection #selfdevelopment #connectioncoach #doglove #reactivedogsunite #caninecoaching #conciousconnection #dogtherapy #reactiverecovery #astrodogs #dogsandspirituality #doless

Whoever said time heals was right… But it also makes bad habits VERY hard to change! The longer you wait to work on the life you want with your dog, the longer that dream is going to remain out of reach. I was about to say “because dogs don’t teach themselves”, which is true, BUT they do learn without you. So either they’re learning things you want them to, or things you don’t. In which, case the longer you wait the more ingrained those undesirable habits will be. Don’t wait! Start investing in your future with your dog now. Because if you’re worried about the time it might take or how much it will cost now…it will only take more of both the longer you wait. I’ll show you how to make REAL progress in six months or less working with me 1:1 for less than the cost of fixed group classes. It’s easier than you think it is. Especially when you have someone guiding you every step of the way. DM me if you’d like to find out more. Eclipse season is upon us. 🌘 It’s a time to let go of habits that no longer serve you & have a fresh start. 💫 May your fresh start with your dog involve a little less pressure (on both of you) and a little more gentle connection (ahhhhh, breathe into it). ❤️ #perspective #dogtraining #dogtrainer #learningfromdogs #therapydog #lifewithdogs #dogmom #canineconnection #selfdevelopment #connectioncoach #doglove #reactivedogsunite #caninecoaching #conciousconnection #dogtherapy #reactiverecovery #astrodogs #dogsandspirituality #doless #bemore

Using 'corrections' to alter behaviour only tells the dog what not to do. It gives no information on what to do instead, and doesn't take the reasons for the dog showing that particular behaviours into account. In particular it suppresses the emotions that have prompted the behaviour and, while it seems to have worked as the behaviour stops, the emotions are still there. Those emotions can then lead to fallout later, with the potential for much more serious issues than the original behaviour their humans wanted to stop. When we focus on building a connection, understanding our dogs and their behaviours and why they do the things that they do, we can see the 'why' of the behaviour and take any action necessary to remove the need or reasons for that behaviour. Whether there is something the dog is struggling with in that situation or if they need a bit more reinforcement history or help to understand that the cue we are asking them to follow means the same thing out in the world as it does when we first taught them it at home. Whether the root cause is fear, frustration, confusion, pain, or any more of a list of possible underlying causes, having a strong connection and understanding of our dogs will let us see what they need and how we can work to provide it for them.

What do you need from a person helping you with your dog? When I was a professional (I was a CPA at an audit firm the …) starting out with my first gsd I can tell you what I didn’t need: - hour long classes where one size fit all; - the assumption that sit, down, heel and stay were they keys to life; - that what would work for the happy go lucky dog next door would also work for my environmental, low food drive, independent dog. - or that 6 weeks was the right time frame to teach my dog these behaviours. I needed a coach who: - listened to what I needed for our life together; - helped me to question why I wanted these things (e.g. a dog that went to the dog park) - came up with a plan that would help us achieve our goals while making sure I wasn’t being unrealistic in my expectations, specifically with things like timeframe. - educated me to ensure I bought into and understood the plan; - someone who understood my challenges, who’d been in my shoes and knew what I was talking about, and - someone who was flexible and could think outside the box to problem solve. If any of the above resonates with you, let me know in the comments. You don’t need to feel@stuck or unheard any longer! #environmentaldog #sensitivedog #lowdrivedog #highdrivedogs #caninecoaching #caninecoach #dogtrainer #dogtrainersofig #yvrdogsofinstagram #yvrdogs #yvrdog #yvrpetprofessionals #k9connection #canineconnection #k9training #workingdogs #workingsogsofig #gsdofinstagram #ilovemyworkingdog

Are you taking the day off? Getting in a little R&R before the week ahead? As any good coach will tell you, you also need to take time off! And I'm telling you the same. You work hard all week at work, and work (and play!) hard with your dog. It's ok to take a day off. In fact it's a good idea to take a day off 😊 Take a relaxed walk. Chill on the couch or in the sun at a park. Just enjoy each other's company. No string attached. I'm going to be taking some of my own advice and not doing much. I know the week is always busy with crazy dogs, a business and a baby, so time off is important and it will give me the much needed energy to meet the week with enthusiasm. And the dogs will get to chill too.🐾 What are your Sunday plans? I'm always curious so let me know in the comments. #sundayfundays #sundayfunday☀️ #relaxedcanine #relaxedcaininelife #caninecoaching #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #crazydogs #taketimeoff #takeabreak #chillwithyourdog #canineconnection #relaxedsunday #sundayrest

So many of the things that people consider 'behaviour problems' in dogs are in fact perfectly normal and instinctive canine behaviours that stretch back over their evolution. The problem is that these behaviours can be inconvenient and potentially problematic in human homes. Understanding dogs, where they came from and the traits that were vital to their survival in the past, lets us see that we need to provide ways for our dogs to carry out these behaviours. It is a vital part of ensuring their welfare and mentioned in the Five Freedoms - the freedom to express natural behaviour. Of course we don't want them chewing the furniture, shredding the cushions, digging up the flowerbeds etc. The key is to find ways to let them carry out these behaviours that both they and we find appropriate and acceptable. A child's sandpit filled with dirt or sand makes a great digging spot, and you can hide things in there for them to find. Alternatively, select a specific spot in the garden and direct the dog there if you find them digging elsewhere. Make sure they have plenty of appropriate chewing material and redirect them to a chew if they start nibbling on the sofa or the chair leg. Provide soft toys to be eviscerated to save the cushions. The great thing with soft toys is that you can restuff them and sew them up - often several times before they are beyond repair. Charoty shops can also be good sources of budget friendly soft toys for this purpose (always making sure they are safe with no bits the dog may swallow). Shredding dogs often also love cardboard. Use the household recycling to fill a cardboard box with things like egg boxes, other pieces of cardboard, packing paper and so on, anything that is dog safe. Scatter their food or some treats through the box contents and let them hunt the food out and then have a great time shredding the box and contents. Yes there is a little clearing up that needs to be done, but it saves the furniture or other items from destruction. With a little imagination it's simple to come up with ways to fulfil these natural drives and your dog will definitely thank you for it. 🧡 #letthembedogs #meettheirneeds #goodguardianship

Shout out to this little lady and her lovely mum. She completed her puppy coaching sessions and what a delight she was to work with! We had four 1-2-1 sessions covering topics such as: 🐾 how to build engagement, 🐾Recall 🐾Loose lead 🐾 Socialisation. Thanks as always to my four legged teacher Crumble for assisting her learning journey. ⭐ I encourage questions when we meet up. In fact I absolutely love it when dog guardians pick my brains about their dogs. It shows a willingness to learn, to help their dogs and do the best for them. There are no timescales when we are learning. It's based around individual needs. The dog's enjoyment and coping thresholds are always at the forefront of our sessions.
