BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY! 🐾📚❤️ This past week was probably the most rewarding time I’ve had as a preschool teacher. I was given the privilege of bringing my dog Copper to class! Now, this wasn’t any show-and-tell experience. There was purpose and intent behind every moment. Shortly before taking the position at Taylors Falls Elementary I had just finished raising up a litter of ten puppies. It was an absolutely amazing experience. I learned a ton about the behavior and habits of dogs, and also how to care for ten precious little puppies; keeping them alive, safe and happy. Not long after I began teaching preschoolers, I realized the similarities between puppies and four year olds were uncanny. After all, It takes great patience and determination to get a littler of pups and a class of preschoolers to come when they are called, to sit on command, to go to the bathroom at the appropriate time and place, to have a calm body, and to exhibit self control. Right away, I decided to incorporate the concept of puppies into my classroom. I bought a golden retriever puppet to use for social-emotional storytelling. I found a gigantic stuffed dog and created a calm space for kids who needed to take a break or have some privacy. (I call it Copper’s Corner). I use pictures and stories of my dogs and refer to them often. There’s just something about dogs (and cats), that bring comfort and joy. Even my shyest students will perk up and respond when I ask about a pet. So it was extremely special to bring in “the real Copper”, as my students lovingly refer to him. And wow, was he a star! Maybe I’m biased, but golden retrievers are so incredibly gentle and intuitive. Copper was sensitive, creeping on his belly when approaching a shy or nervous child. He was calm and gentle making connections with each and every student, meeting them at their needs. I was so proud of him and in awe of what I witnessed. I whole heartedly believe therapy dogs are an important part of health and healing.
