A little history behind our "Castle to Castle" event...... When we decided to relaunch Enniskillen 10km, we wanted to showcase some of the beautiful sights and landmarks of our County Town 💚 So we thought..... what could be more picturesque than having our start line at the foot of Enniskillen Castle, along the banks of the River Erne? 🏰 As Ireland's only Island town Enniskillen Castle is placed exactly on the heart of the Lough, where the upper river joins the lower, on the body of water that spans the length of County Fermanagh ☘️ From the seat of Enniskillen Castle, the route runs through part of the town and then through the scenic grounds of our local National Trust property at Castlecoole. Surrounded by stunning landscape on the outskirts of the town, participants can enjoy a run past the majestic 18th century home of the Earls of Belmore. Unquestionably the most sumptuous room in Castle Coole, County Fermanagh is the oval Saloon, its walls decorated with grey scagliola pilasters with Corinthian capitals. Extraordinary trouble was taken with the decoration here, not least the mahogany doors, slightly curved due to the room’s shape, inlaid with satinwood and with panels thought to have been painted by Italian artist Biagio Rebecca. Reached via an Imperial staircase, the first floor of Castle Coole, County Fermanagh is centred on a double-height lobby, above which hovers an oval skylight; an iron balustrade interspersed with Doric columns painted to look like marble runs around the upper level. As with the entrance hall below, furnishings here have been kept to a minimum, with just a number of semi-elliptical side tables designed by James Wyatt, and a set of four ebonised chairs. Inside the niches are what appear to be four giant pedestals for sculpture. James Wyatt’s neo-classical masterpiece, Castle Coole, County Fermanagh, was designed in the early 1790s for Armar Lowry-Corry, first Earl of Belmore. The house’s spare aesthetic is established by the entrance hall, divided into two parts by a screen of porphry-coloured scagliola columns with Doric capitals. Matching Carrara marble chimneypieces face each other across a floor of Portland stone.
