A favourite of Roman soldiers and horse girls alike, Epona is the only Celtic deity that the Romans had adopted into their own state calendar of worship. Originating in Eastern and Central Gaul, with her epicentre seeming to be modern day Burgundy, this horse goddess galloped into the spiritual life of most parts of the Roman Empire. She was worshipped from the British Isles to Dacia, largely being adopted by the cavalry. Epona was even given a feast day by the Romans, December 18. There is only one such calendrical mention of her but I believe it’s safe to assume that a formal feast day in her honour would have been more widespread given her importance. Epona’s image is found more times than any other Celtic deity within the Empire. She appears most often either as a mare and foal or as a human in association with a horse in some way. Oftentimes, Epona is also seen carrying freshly harvested foods and little cakes. This, combined with the foals commonly seen with her makes her ties to fertility and motherhood quite obvious. At the same time, her innate equestrian aspect made the Roman cavalry adopt her as their patroness, with her image adorning stables all over the Empire. She was worshipped by individuals too, such as Marcus Cocceius Firmus, a centurion stationed at Auchendavy, a fort in Scotland. Hers was a long-lived cult with a wide distribution across the Roman Empire. Epona was a goddess worthy of attention then and now. I’m sure many fellow pagan equestrians have engaged in her worship before. I can attest that she has answered my own prayers with incredible speed. Mark your calendars for December 18, bless your equine companions, adorn your altars and barns with roses, and offer her incense and salted flour. #epona #eponagoddess #celticpaganism #gaulishpolytheism #religioromana #romanpaganism #horsegoddess #celticpolytheism #romanpolytheism #goddessepona #romanpagan #gaulishpagan

Are we Physically Affected When we Visit Ancient Sacred Places? In a previous post I discussed some folklore accounts of people encountering fairy beings and supernatural presences at places considered magical and a conduit to the Otherworld. I mentioned the work of Professor Éva Pócs who has studied Eastern European folklore and has written about how a person may be punished by fairies or spirits if they do not answer the call to do their bidding. In Balkan culture the person is considered to now be a fairy themselves. We also looked at how there are similar traditions in Asian shamanism. But is it possible that an ancient place can in itself also speak to us, or change us, so fundamentally that our whole life then sets out on a new path? While this might seem strange to some, I have listened to many accounts from those who have had just such an experience. These people have told me that they were somehow ‘changed’ following a visit to an ancient sacred site, and often very unexpectedly. Some of the encounters I have been fortunate enough to hear about have occurred to someone who has been alone hiking, whereas others have taken place when a person was part of a group. Here is the twist regarding that, though; people often feel that everyone else vanishes from their consciousness, and, perhaps, in a more literal sense! FULL POST ON FACEBOOK.

#belenos #belisama #paganismegaulois #pantheongaulois #gaulishpantheon #gaulishpolytheism #gaulishpaganism #celticpolytheism #celticpaganism

One of the more impressive examples of Iron Age silversmithing, the Gundestrup Cauldron gives us an important insight into the Celtic polytheism of the time. Plate A shows the iconic cross-legged antlered/horned man holding a torc and a snake. Many have interpreted him to be Cernunnos, a particularly ancient proto-Celtic deity. This rustic god is associated with the wilds, virility, and animals like stags and serpents. He remains a god that is popular with modern day pagans, and many Wiccans take a particular interest in him as the archetypal Horned God. The cauldron itself ties back to being an important object in daily and spiritual life. The Coire ansic is one of the “four treasures of the Tuatha Dé Danann,” and it’s a cauldron which never runs dry. Its owner is the Dagda, the father god and chief of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Other cauldrons such as the Pair Dadeni which could resurrect the dead and the Cauldron of Dyrnwch which could tell cowards from the brave also feature roles of varying significance in Celtic folklore. The Gundestrup Cauldron is the most famous example of an item that continues to be of practical and spiritual value. Many polytheists and magic practitioners still use cauldrons for spiritual purposes such as a vessel for burnt offerings. Whether the Gundestrup Cauldron had any spiritual significance beyond its motifs is unclear, but it is one of many that ties into ancestral and living paganism to this day. 📷Marie-Lan Nguyen, Wikimedia Commons #celticpaganism #gaulishpolytheism #gundestrupcauldron #celticpolytheism #ironage

Colonization presents itself as a multifaceted, pervasive entity. Sometimes it might be prominent in popular culture, such as the notion of ‘St Patrick’s Day’ who helped to sow the seeds that led to the decline of the ancient Celtic civilization. When we take a moment to actually understand what we claim to celebrate, we should all be disgusted at how prevalent whiteness is within our societies. I do not celebrate today as a holiday, instead I see it as a day of mourning what could have been. How many other cultures have we lost to cultural genocide? We saw this in ancient times with the polytheists of Canaan slowly being shunned from their homelands as the religions of Abraham sprouted, and we see this again in Occupied Palestine as the seaside cultures that flourished there are now being destroyed by the apartheid, occupying entity. How much longer are we going to endorse cultural genocide until there is nothing left to return to? I hope whoever reads this feels compelled to learn something about their history, their land, or themself today.

Let's talk about Irish history. The British Empire colonized Ireland, taking Irish land and giving it to English settlers. They forbade the Irish from speaking their native language (Gaelic), banning it in schools and government and forcing them to learn English instead. They were fined heavily if they spoke Gaelic in public. The 1367 Statutes of Kilkenny also banned the settlers from engaging in Irish language and culture, because England feared the settlers were becoming too Irish. English Christians also tried to snuff out the Irish Celtic Paganism religion by spreading Christianity around the island. St. Patrick was one of the colonizers who set out to rid them of their native religion. The Irish were deemed inferior and uncivilized, and when the Irish resisted this subjugation, the British responded with brute force, imprisoning, torturing, and killing those who fought for freedom. The potato famine was a way to starve the Irish into submission and killed 1 million people and left 1-2 million more fleeing Ireland as refugees. It was a calculated effort to take all of the food grown in Ireland and export it to England, leaving only potatoes, even when those potatoes became diseased. Starvation is often used as a tool of subjugation. The subjugation of the Irish has spread out over a long period of time. Perhaps St. Patrick's Day should be rebranded as Irish Culture Day. After all, why are we celebrating a British man who colonized Ireland to get rid of a piece of Irish culture?

Abnoba is a Celtic Goddess who was worshipped mainly in the Black Forest area of modern Germany. Tacitus claims that Abnoba was also the name of the hill from where the source of the River Danube flows. Her name may originate from the Indo-European words for 'river' and 'to be damp'. The Romans equated her with Diana in some inscriptions. Many see her as a river, moon, hunting, and wilderness Goddess. A protectress and guide of wild animals, sovereign of the forests, and preservation of the environment. Of course, these are but some of the elements Abnoba evokes, and I do not claim to speak for all Abnoba devotees. I am working on a series of eight watercolour paintings featuring Abnoba through the seasons, with animals from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. While she originated from one area in ancient times, today we can all connect with her energy and guidance no matter where we live. I hope my devotional pieces to her will convey that. . . . 🐿🦌🐗 . . . #watercolour #celtic #celticart #abnoba #diana #gaul # #gaulishpolytheism #celticpolytheism #pagan #celticgoddess #celticpagan #nature #spring #forest #wilderness #goddess #wildgoddess

Kayna, sometimes called Cain, is a Celtic goddess who had the power to foretell the death of kings. She is the daughter of Branwen, and it seemed appropriate to place them next to each other. October 8 is Kayna's feast day. She is the patron saint of Glasgow, Scotland, and is another goddess of the principle of sovereignty. She is depicted dressed in gray with long tresses reaching to her knees. She has also been mythically linked to the goddess Ceridwen. Her name comes from cain, which means "beautiful" in Old Welsh, and it is cognate to that of the later Saint Keyne, pronounced the same. Kayna was born in Wales, and a famous holy well in Cornwall is named after her. In surviving folk tradition, the first of a married couple to drink from the well will rule the marriage. In an amusing anecdote about relationships, a new husband rushed from the church to be first at the well, only to learn later that his new bride had brought a bottle of the well water to the church. It pays to plan ahead. Source: Goddesses For Every Day by Julie Loar #Kayna #Cain #CelticGoddess #CelticSpirituality #CelticPaganism #CelticPolytheism #Glasgow #Scotland #Goddesses #GoddessStudies

Day 31 of the 31 days to the Morrígan challenge. This day's prompt was "Let's see how this plays out" and similarly to this theme, I started with a different idea and then let it play out when I noticed that the painting wanted to become something else. As other old deities, the Morrígan and her sisters are frequently misunderstood and misrepresented, and I depicted one of these weird interpretations: a goth-looking, black-haired, well-endowed woman wearing a corset dress and a pentagram, tattooed with a triple moon, awen symbol, and crescent moon and making a heart gesture. #art #artist #watercolour #watercolor #watercolorart #traditionalart #painting #instaart #instaartist #goddess #goddessart #irish #witch #wicca #druid #druidry #obod #pagan #celticpolytheism #irishmythology #morrigan #themorrigan #anmorrigan #31daysmorrigan #31daysofmorrigan #31daysofthemorrigan #inktober #inktober23 #sketchbook #sketch

Day 22 of the 31 days to the Morrígan challenge. This day's prompt was "Nemain" and I chose a pale screaming woman with lots of bloody flecks around her to represent her fierce scream that kills hundreds of warriors on the spot. #art #artist #watercolour #watercolor #watercolorart #traditionalart #painting #instaart #instaartist #goddess #goddessart #irish #witch #wicca #druid #druidry #obod #pagan #celticpolytheism #irishmythology #morrigan #themorrigan #anmorrigan #31daysmorrigan #31daysofmorrigan #31daysofthemorrigan #inktober #inktober23 #sketchbook #sketch

Day 21 of the 31 days to the Morrígan challenge. This day's prompt was "Infuse your work with purpose and clarity" and I created an Ogham sigil for this task which I surrounded with fitting colours. #art #artist #watercolour #watercolor #watercolorart #traditionalart #painting #instaart #instaartist #goddess #goddessart #irish #witch #wicca #druid #druidry #obod #pagan #celticpolytheism #irishmythology #morrigan #themorrigan #anmorrigan #31daysmorrigan #31daysofmorrigan #31daysofthemorrigan #inktober #inktober23 #sketchbook #sketch

Day 20 of the 31 days to the Morrígan challenge. This day's prompt was "Celtic mythology" and I chose Erynn Rowan Laurie's circle of stones prayer beads to represent this. These beads represent important elements of Irish mythological tradition: the trinity, the three cauldrons, the double spiral of life and death, summer (sun) and winter (moon), the four treasures of the Tuatha, the airts, and land, sea, and sky. #art #artist #watercolour #watercolor #watercolorart #traditionalart #painting #instaart #instaartist #goddess #goddessart #irish #witch #wicca #druid #druidry #obod #pagan #celticpolytheism #irishmythology #morrigan #themorrigan #anmorrigan #31daysmorrigan #31daysofmorrigan #31daysofthemorrigan #inktober #inktober23 #sketchbook #sketch
