I was gifted a "Century Tree" a few years ago. From the TAMU website: "Texas A&M University's renowned Century Tree has become the stuff of legend over the last 100 years, believed by many Aggies to bring good luck to couples who pass under it. The Century Tree, located near the Academic Building, holds a special place in the hearts of many Aggies. Well over 100 years old, the tree was one of the first planted on Texas A&M's massive 5,200-acre campus." The Aggie Century Tree Project began in 2010 as a fundraiser for a $100,000 President's Endowed Scholarship for Texas A&M University. Century Tree seedlings were grown from acorns harvested from the Century Tree. These live oak seedlings were available for purchase to fund the scholarship. The project has since ended with the passing of its founder Andy Duffie '78. It's my understanding, this tree planted in Gallatin, TN is the northern-most Century Tree. We found a Texas A&M birdhouse while on vacation in the Smokies last week. Going Out of The Forest Day Three: The last day inside the forest. Woke up at the Lake Venado camp site with a 5Β°C temperature. Mt. Apo was hiding in the thick fog surrounding the camp site. We were treated with a sumptuous breakfast before we started the trek at 9am. The trek going out of the forest is more of descent, which was made more challenging because of the rain., but at the same time exciting because we were able to pass by the century tree. The Almasiga tree or the Agathis Philipininsis. At my phase, I was able to go out of the forest by 6pm. Tired, thirsty and drenchedβ¦but SAFE! It stands in the middle of rice and coffee plantations at the OISCA farm and would take 42 grown men (other sites state 38 π€) to encircle its trunk with their hands outstretched. The tree serves as an ecosystem in itself for bats, lizards and insects. Philippine folklore often tag balete trees as mysterious and enchanted by spirit dwellers, and this one is no exception.
