Completed series! — 🚨Final overall thoughts are in the comments to avoid spoilers in the caption!!🚨 • At 23 volumes this gorgeous shojo manga has finally come to an end and I’ll be incredibly sad to see it go, it has definitely become one of my favourite series! 😭💕 I read the final 3 volumes in one sitting and I’m glad I did! I loved finally seeing what the real antagonist was all about and their reason for being. It’s so easy to just have a ‘so-and-so wants to bring about the end of the world’ antagonist but getting a reader to understand the whys for this is usually missed or skipped but here, it worked really well! Some of the magical mechanics for what happened in the past and how it relates to Chakuro now did kiiiinda feel tacked on at the end but, overall, I think it worked. Another thing I really loved was seeing Ouni’s character development. He was one of my favourites from the very beginning and I loved seeing him change over the course of the series and in these final volumes in particular (he got his character arc hurray! Over the course of the series, I did find some of CotW’s world building a little difficult to grasp, what with it’s Nous’ and Dimonas’ etc but all too often I’ve found that fantasy series shy away from making their worlds unique and truly fantastical and CotW was nothing but imaginative until the very end! I adore this world Abi Umeda has created and I’m excited to see what they produce next The final volume did feel a little drawn out however. It felt like, when we had arrived at the end, something else came about and would threaten the happy ending everyone was promised. Honestly, the series felt like it ended about 3 times before we reached that final page 😅 Despite this, grief and death is something that hangs over all of the characters of CotW - everyone in this series has lost someone. It was nice to see all the character’s we’ve lost over the course of the series have one last hurrah and that these characters deaths have an effect on all of the still living characters motivation for that final push to the end. (I low key completely forgot how brutal and bloody this story was when I read these last three volumes 😳)

Ormai ho perso il conto delle cose valide che ho visto e letto e che purtroppo, per non si sa bene quale ragione, si ritrovano molto più lontane dai riflettori di quanto meriterebbero. È questo il caso di Children of the Whales, un manga che mi ha conquistato fin da subito e che una volta finito mi ha fatto esclamare "cavolo ma è bellissimo, non capisco proprio perché non ne parli quasi nessuno!". Ragazzi, questo manga ha letteralmente tutto, ottimi disegni, un setting originale, personaggi scritti come si deve e mai accantonati in corso d'opera, un power system basato sulla magia che è dettagliato ma mai confusionario, sviluppi sensati e sempre coerenti e un finale giusto e ragionato, per questo motivo mi viene strano pensare che una serie del genere sia passata così in secondo piano qui da noi. La sua poca notorietà è forse dovuta alle mancanze di chi si professa "grande divulgatore" del settore e poi dimostra invece una conoscenza superficiale del media? Può darsi, ma non sono qui per puntare il dito contro nessuno, tento piuttosto di rimediare a questo errore commesso da altri portandovi qualcuna delle magnifiche illustrazioni di questo manga (cosa che, già da sola, mi aveva convinto a iniziarlo) e lasciandovi il consiglio di dargli una letta perché è una serie che a mio avviso merita davvero tanto.

[1/4]Children of the whales di Abi Umeda "Memoria" Questa volta darò un piccolo incipit di trama per ingolosirvi, visto che a mio parere è veramente interessante e mi ha convinto ad iniziare quest'opera praticamente a scatola chiusa visto che è stata colpevolmente abbandonata dalla memoria collettiva e non ne parla nessuno, iniziamo! In un mondo per qualche motivo completamente ricoperto da un enorme mare di sabbia senza praticamente anima viva in giro a causa dell'ipotetica estinzione della civiltà che prima lo abitava gli abitanti di questa storia, isolati dal mondo, vivono sopra una grande balena di fango immobile, essi si dividono tra marchiati e non marchiati, i primi sono in grado di usare la Thymia, un potere telecinetico influenzato fortemente dalle emozioni, molto potente e con vari utilizzi bellici che però accorcia drasticamente la loro vita e sono la maggior parte degli abitanti, viceversa i non marchiati non hanno poteri ma vivono più a lungo e per questo ricoprono le cariche più importanti a livello politico. Questi abitanti però saranno effettivamente soli? Non c'è nessuna certezza e per questo vengono spesso fatte ricognizioni in altre isole galleggianti nella sabbia, che però non hanno mai portato a niente di fatto fino al momento in cui inizia la nostra storia, una ragazza su una di queste isole interrompe la striscia di fallimenti. In questo contesto vive Chakuro, il protagonista, il ragazzo è un archivista marchiato e soffre di ipegrafia, ossia l'impulso irrefrenabile di scrivere e per questo registra sul suo diario tutte le memorie dell'epoca in cui sta vivendo in modo da poter trasmettere la sapienza del suo popolo ai posteri, in questo modo leggiamo l'opera come se fosse effettivamente il suo resoconto lasciato a noi lettori ma ritrovato dalla stessa autrice come ci riferisce lei, che ha deciso di raccontarci questa storia, un topos metanarrativo non certo nuovo ma che comunque ho apprezzato tanto.

Le Cnuio letture di Gennaio 2024 💟 Children of the Whales - Abi Umeda Le disavventure degli abitanti della balena di fango mi hanno saputo emozionare, facendomi affezionare ai protagonisti della storia. Mi è dispiaciuto doverli salutare. Uno shojo drammatico molto bello e con dei disegni spettacolari, potrei farci un post a parte volendo Mio marito dorme nel freezer Mi è piaciuta soprattutto la prima parte. Riesce a catturare molto bene l'interesse del lettore che non vede l'ora di scoprire il mistero dietro al ritorno in vita del marito. Non mi è piaciuto invece come sono stati usati alla fine i personaggi della madre, della vicina e del collega. Suburban Hell - Taro Kanaburo La delusione del mese. Avevo grandi aspettative visto che era stato presentato come un manga che raccontava in maniera estrema gli orrori della società giapponese. Peccato che di metà dei racconti si capisca poco nulla. L'unica storia bella è quella del tizio che ricorda la propria infanzia 🧸 Il club della ricerca sulla fellatio - Zonda Una insegnante e alcune studentesse riaprono un club molto particolare.. e per farlo ovviamente serve l'aiuto di un povero ragazzo costretto a subire molteplici suonate di piffero 😔 Un volume bellissimo e fortunatamente privo di censure! Andiamo al Karaoke! - Yama Wayama Cosa avranno mai in comune uno studente e uno yakuza? Ma ovviamente la passione per il karaoke! Anche se i motivi per cui lo yakuza vuole migliorare le sue abilità canore sono alquanto discutibili 🤣 Volume simpatico e divertente, amo questa autrice! Pinkie suona sempre due volte - Shun Umezawa Le storie che vedono protagonista Pinkie l'acido, uno yakuza nano, sanno regalare molteplici spunti di riflessione. Pinkie poi, cinico e spietato ma anche terribilmente onesto e leale, ha un fascino incredibile! Il Corvo - James O' Barr Capolavoro Di una potenza visiva, narrativa ed emotiva con pochi eguali. Nel 2017 usciva il primo volume di una serie onirica che entra nelle profondità dell’animo umano. Sto parlando di Children of the whales di Abi Umeda. Dopo 6 anni è giunta al termine con il ventitreesimo numero. Voglio parlarvene anche se sarà difficile perché io stessa non penso di averla compresa pienamente e sicuramente ne farò una rilettura tutta di fila per entrare più a fondo dentro il messaggio di questa bellissima storia! L’autrice crea una trama basandosi sul ritrovamento di alcuni diari trovati per caso in una piccola libreria. Altro non sono che le cronache di Chakuro, un abitante della Balena di fango, una grandissima nave fatta di fango su cui vivono felicemente centinaia di persone. Questa nave viaggia autonomamente in un mare di sabbia in cui non si può scendere, e da cui non si torna. La popolazione della Balena di fango è divisa tra marchiati e non marchiati, cioè tra chi riesce a usare una forza spirituale chiamata Timia per muovere gli oggetti e chi invece non ce l’ha. Tutto scorre tranquillamente fino al giorno in cui il loro mondo viene stravolto dopo il ritrovamento di Lykos, una ragazza che è un’Apatheia, cioè priva di sentimenti. Poco dopo la nave viene attaccata da un esercito mascherato, da quel momento la vita per gli abitanti della Balena di fango non sarà più la stessa. Questo è solo un assaggio della storia racchiusa in questi 23 volumi. I disegni sono fantastici, perfetti per il tipo di narrazione, rendono pienamente il mondo di sabbia e fango in cui sono immersi i personaggi. La storia è carica di sentimenti: da quelli forti e inarrestabili, alla privazione totale di ogni forma di emozione. Personaggi ricchi di pathos si incontrano con bambole prive di emozioni in una continua lotta alla sopravvivenza e guerra contro le ingiustizie. È una storia molto bella, resa anche più bella dall’idea che possa essere un vero resoconto di una popolazione esistita tanti anni fa o che forse esisterà tra molti secoli, di avvenimenti successi in un passato remoto o che succederanno in un futuro lontanato. Qualunque sia la verità questo manga insegna la bontà d’animo e la necessità di aiutarsi gli uni con gli altri. Una lettura consigliata!

Estos últimos tomos han sido ciertamente dramáticos porque se mascaba la tragedia de forma inminente. Yyyyy ha sido un final que no me esperaba, la verdad, pero en realidad bastante acorde a la historia. Ha sido una historia bonita, triste, dramática y con mucha carga social de la de hacerte pensar. Können die Schlammwal-Bewohner Skía besiegen und die Sandreinigung aufhalten? Schafft es der Schutztrupp die Evakuierten zu retten? Und was passiert mit Chakuro? Quando tutto sembra perduto a causa del Kataclysmos attivato da Liontari che si è fuso con Skia, ecco che a sorpresa anche i non marchiati possono rendersi utili: il canto che intonano va in soccorso a Chakuro, Lykos e Ouni che stanno lottando strenuamente per la loro sopravvivenza e quella della gente dell'isola.
