Diana Ross- Love Hangover Motown staff producer Hal Davis was in need of a hit. He had become one of the producers of the Jackson 5 recordings, but the brothers left the company that made them superstars signing with Epic Records. Hearing the demo of the tune, Davis contacted the composers, Pam Sawyer and Marilyn McCleod asking for permission to record the song. Once granted, Davis headed straight to the studio. But the musicians hired wasn’t too fond of the two-tempo tune. “I had to fight, they didn’t want to up-tempo it,” Davis tells Billboard magazine. Even the singer who lends her voice to the project didn’t feel the vibe. It took some convincing from the President, Berry Gordy to suggest that Diana record the tune. “She didn’t want to do it, she didn’t like disco,” Davis recalled. So we got her a little taste of vodka, she’s a vodka drinker-and she sat back, took her shoes off and said, ‘Well I’ll go out and give it a try!” Earlier before the 2 a.m. session took place, Davis had instructed the engineer to install a disco ball to create the mood. As the lights flashed, the vodka was tasting good, Ross became more comfortable with the material; she hummed, sang bit parts, laughed, danced around and some said that she even Channeled Billie Holiday. “You would have thought it was a party going on,” Davis Recalled. Hearing a demo of this tune, Davis got in touch with co-writer Marilyn McLeod about permission to record the song. Once granted, he went straight to the studio. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Davis recalled that the musicians weren’t fond of the two-tempo tune because of the disco vibe. Davis was convincing, but the singer who was to lend her vocals wasn’t feeling it either. As with a lot of singers at the time, disco left sour tastes, but a shot of Vodka did the trick. “She had just given birth, very moody, showed little interest. Knowing of her taste for Vodka, we got her a shot of Vodka, she sat back, kicked off her shoes and said Well I’ll go out and give it a try”.
