Bobbi Humphrey – Satin Doll (1974), Blue Note Records This week's theme: Youngbloods 👉Swipe for a sample! Another classic Mizell Brothers production: the 4th solo album by Miss Humphrey for Blue Note Records. Probably the coolest female flute player around! Another showcase of catchy Jazz-Funk, from the mid 70s Blue Note catalog. The list of session players is insane, to give you the image: Jerry Peters, Chuck Rainey, Harvey Mason, Melvin ‘Wah Wah’ Ragin, King Errison, and Don Preston. Most of them are far from Jazz musicians (like Bobbi Humphrey’s background). This is exactly why this world's bland so beautifully and groovy together, Humphrey is all over and obviously the star of the show. The biggest problem was the release date, only 6 months after her masterpiece ‘Black and Blues’. How strong ‘Satin Doll’ might be, it could'nt compete with its predecessor. At least as a whole, because the bangers here are top notch Jazz-Funk (I don’t like the label Fusion somehow…). ‘New York times’, ‘Ladies day’ and especially my favourite ‘Funhouse’ should all be on ‘best of's' of this genre for sure! Those tracks are instant catchy, but with a more layered and sinister undertone full of interesting plot twists and solo’s. The same with mid tempo tracks ‘My little girl’ and the title track. But other moments are too soft and smooth for my taste. Especially the dreadful cover of ‘You are the sunshine of my life’, to be honest I don’t like the original, but this is even worse. How good this record may be, somehow it’s a inbetween record in her discography. It fills the gap between the rougher ‘Black and Blues’ into the more laid back funk of ‘Funky Dancer’. Station 1 has the best bins out there, and I love taking advantage of unknown delights, I will admit, I knew nothing about this record, and while I’ve got drummer Peter Erskine on loads of releases, I knew nothing of the other two members of this combo. What I got was a really top notch album of post-bop including a cover of Monk’s Little Rootie Tootie. Bassist Buell Neidlinger and Marty Krystall, who plays tenor sax and bass clarinet are the deemed leaders of Krystall Klear and the Buells. The album also features organist Jerry Peters and Gene Cipriano on tenor and bass oboe. In addition to the Monk, the group work out a double tenor tribute to Ben Webster on Krystall’s "Ben's Addiction”. Summer vibes don’t get more summery than Bobbi Humphrey and the Mizells, which makes them sound like a 50s vocal group. Absolutely perfect album that I could happily flip over and over all day if I didn’t have a birthday party to take my son to. So many great things about this record. Dorothy Ashby is hidden away in here, blink and you’d miss her but there she is making a good track sound better. Julian Priester also turns up popping out of the ensemble for solos at the end of a couple of numbers which is something I’ve got plenty of time for. Just noticed for the first time that Roger Glenn who plays that badass flute on ‘Street lady’ is here on vibes and marimba, fair to say she didn’t need anyone else to play flute. Thanks to @jazzbasementlouis for knowing whenever any bargains are listed on eBay and throwing the tip my way. I’ve wanted this ever since grabbing a best of Byrd with the banging title track on it…take a bow Roger Glenn for the wickedly funky flute solo on that one which just pops out the speakers at you. Yeah the cover could tell a few stories but to me some records suit a bit of wear and this is one of them.
