Cossi Anatz - Jazz Afro-Occitan, released on Disques Vendémiaire (via Palm!) label founded in 1977 by Jean-Pierre Graziani. One of my fav french spiritual jazz / free jazz from late 70. Michel Marre (Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra, spotted with François Tusques on various Le Temps des Cerises drops) drives this deep and soulful session, ruff and rugged blend of oriental, Moroccan and coltranian fog. Happy Birthday Blossom Dearie! Blossom Dearie - Blossom Dearie (Verve Records, 1957 First US Mono Pressing) & (Verve Records, 2018 VMP Pressing) . Today, the 28th April, would have been the birthday of the legendary jazz singer and pianist Blossom Dearie. Although I don’t listen to a substantial amount of vocal jazz, I have found that I gravitate to this debut album at least once each year, usually on this date. In fact, over the past few years I have started to warm up to certain vocal jazz albums in addition to the obvious ones from the “big” names such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, etc, and in part this is down to Blossom Dearie. I have acquired a few of her albums over the years, including a signed album I found at a carboot sale for 50p, but my favourite by far is her 1957 self titled “Blossom Dearie”. The album was recorded over 2 dates on the 11th and 12th September, 1956, and was an accumulation of years of immersion soaking up the New York jazz scene. Dearie would frequent both clubs and rehearsal spaces, gaining as much experience of the music as possible, including being in Gil Evans’ basement whilst he and Miles Davis were workshopping ‘The Birth of the Cool’. Davis later referred to her as being “The only white woman who ever had soul”. What really sets “Blossom Dearie” apart, other than her unique vocal style, is her ability to sing in both English and French. It certainly adds a refreshing edge to the 14 tracks which range from ballads to more up-tempo humorous tracks. MILES DAVIS - Four & More / Recorded Live In Concert (1966/??? Columbia Records) When this was recorded live at the Philharmonic Hall of NY's Lincoln Center in 1964, MILES' band was in a transitional phase. He had assembled TONY WILLIAMS, RON CARTER and HERBIE HANCOCK to his band - just WAYNE SHORTER was yet missing to what would soon become one of the greatest groups in jazz history and in retrospect called "The Second Great Quintet". 💫 On tenor here is GEORGE COLEMAN who did a great job - their versions of Miles classics like "So What" or "Walkin" are highly energetic and played a whole lot faster then the originals. Everything seems in place here but change and a desire to create something new and more forward thinking was already on the horizon and in the minds of the four so COLEMAN's stint remained quite brief. HIDDEN GEM 💎 ! 🔮 T R I A N G L E 🔮 One of the earliest French progressive rock bands is Triangle. Although he left after a few singles and explored his more experimental tendencies, most notably with Richard Pinhas and Heldon, they were led at one point by the diminutive Alain Renaud on guitar. Their presentation is a reliably fantastic collection, that blends French and English verses, with a hard hallucinogenic chomp in the guitar work. "Left With My Sorrow" is probably the album's most approachable track. This is a fantastic track that combines the sounds of bands like the Small Faces, early Humble Pie, and early Spooky Tooth with Procol Harum guitar lines from the Robin Trower era. Now, when I say accessible, I do not mean bad or boring. This album, along with perhaps the first two Martin Circus albums, are a good place to start if you're new to French progressive rock. Be aware that, like Martin Circus's later work, it is completely shoddy. So for this week’s #superfriendssunday host @lbshel asked us to share an unplayed album from our collection. This copy of U2’s Songs of Innocence is a special Record Store Day release that I originally didn’t buy, kept seeing in my shop at the time and eventually missed out on (this is back when some limited releases would actually linger for a while). I eventually decided to be an RSD U2 completist and tracked down a sealed copy for a really good price. It came packed among layers of stiffeners and bubble wrap. At that point, I just decided to leave it sealed as I still had my regular copy. Maybe one day I’ll crack it open.
