À la fin des années 70, Philippe Guédon, responsable de la branche automobile de Matra, part en voyage d'affaires chez Chrysler. En discutant avec son homologue américain, il tombe sous le charme des vans américains et, de retour en France, il décide de lancer les études d'un van adapté à la France. Matra n'a pas les ressources nécessaires pour concevoir ce projet seul et décide de se tourner vers Peugeot. Pour rappel, en 1969, Matra signe un contrat avec Simca qui s'engage à fournir les moteurs des prochains modèles en plus de bénéficier de son réseau de distribution. Ainsi, les Bagheera, Rancho et Murena recevront les moteurs de la firme de Poissy. En 1978, Peugeot rachète Simca qui deviendra Talbot ; voilà ce qui lie Matra et Peugeot. Les premiers prototypes de l'Espace emprunteront donc des éléments provenant de la banque de pièces PSA. Malheureusement, le groupe est en difficulté et ne peut pas se permettre un tel coup de poker. Matra se tourne donc vers Renault, en meilleure santé financière, et Bernard Hanon, le PDG, croit au projet ! En 1984, le Renault Espace est présenté et le premier mois seulement 9 exemplaires sont vendus ! Il ne faut pas oublier que l'Espace est un véhicule assez onéreux, coûtant 96 000F (31 435€) pour la version GTS et 105 000F (34 382€) pour le haut de gamme TSE. Après 6 mois de production seulement, 2 703 exemplaires ont trouvé preneurs. Chez Renault, on panique et on envisage même de transformer l'Espace en utilitaire. Mais très vite, les Français succombent au charme du monospace : "L'essayer, c'est l'adopter !" Les versions se multiplient, avec les motorisations turbo-diesel et même 4 roues motrices avec le système Quadra. Jusqu'en 1991, 191 694 exemplaires de l'Espace 1 verront le jour. 1992 Renault 25 TXE Executive Automatic On the other end of the spectrum from that Corsa was this absolutely mint and incredibly late registered R25. It was the star of the show personally(I (unfortunately) own one so I'm (unfortunately) biased), and it's perfect. Sure it's an auto, though by this point I'm fairly certain Renault had sorted the explodey gearbox issues. Not only does this example have dealer plates and dealer stickers, but, in what is a first for me, it also has DEALER MUD FLAPS! The coolest things I've ever seen. A credit to the owner in the condition it's in and its only covered a mere 47k miles too. I don't usually post spots from meets or shows but how could I not showcase this one... Two quirky features that immediately identify the Renault 4 as a French car: 1. The longitudinal, "reversed" drivetrain configuration, with the gearbox located in front of the engine. This does improve interior space as it completely removes the intrusion of the gearbox; on the other hand, it requires the gear lever connection to the actual gears to somehow go around the engine (or above), leading to the rather odd-looking gear knob protruding from the dashboard in these. I guess this also bears some penalty in terms of weight distribution, but, as a plus, it still allows for hand-cranking when the battery is down, as the crankshaft is directly accessible from outside. This configuration was born (as THE way to front wheel drive) with the Traction Avant in the 1930s and remained for quite long the French way to front wheel drive. 2. The different wheelbase depending on the side of the car. R4 has a nice front double-wishbone suspension coupled with longitudinally mounted torsion bars, a scheme shared for example with Alfa 75; on the rear axle, it has longitudinal trailing arms. This implies that the wheel moves vertically and horizontally describing a semi-circle when observing the car from one side. This, kinematically, couples really well with transversely mounted torsion bars: the issue is, however, that in order to achieve a lower stiffness and allow for the soft, plush ride you'd expect from a French car, you have to increase the length of the bar, up to a point where you cannot fit two of them over the width of the car. But this is no issue if you just offset them horizontally, leading to a small packaging masterpiece (nothing, in the rear suspension, interferes with the trunk space, which is perfectly planar) at the cost of a 35-40mm asymmetry in longitudinal wheel center position. The average 60s-80s European buyer showed he didn't care much about response symmetry, but he did about usable cargo space.
