Take a break and come and learn something completely different in the wonderful new Make Space gallery studio in Hitchin. In this two and a half hour workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn about one of the oldest building materials that humans have ever used. Known for its strength and versatility, concrete has been used in construction for thousands of years and was first found to be used in buildings dating back to 7000 BCE. Still used now as one of the strongest and most versatile materials in the construction industry and because of that versatility, it is a fantastic material for crafting. Our workshop will take place in the wonderful new Make Space gallery studio in Hitchin, on Saturday 8th June at 1pm. You will learn how to work with concrete to cast a unique mini vessel in a silicone mould of your choice. You will have the chance to experiment with concrete pigments to create a one-of-a-kind piece to take home. After casting your vessel, we will break for a cuppa while the concrete sets. Once it’s ready, we will cut cork bases for our vessels before water-sealing them to take home. All materials and equipment will be provided, and no prior casting experience is necessary. Some more completed works at 22 old bond st. Firstly, existing trusses were removed and the steels were sand blasted to remove the rust and treated with a galvanic paint. Casting of trusses, a silcone mould with a fibre glass shell was created using an existing truss. Then, a high performance concrete was poured to create the truss. Pretty happy with how these first castings came out. Had some trouble with air bubbles in the epoxy but generally things went pretty 'smoothly'.. The concrete cast is my favorite but tricky to do due to thickness of the mix. The casting polyurethane is incredible, easy to pour and so fast to cure. Every time Fine Art students do the experimental concrete casting workshop in the Edward James Studios @westdeancollege, led by regular tutor @george.charman and Subject Leader Dr. David Stent, it is always great fun to see such different approaches to materials, processes, forms and aesthetics. Last week, as well as conducting sand casting experiments inspired by Costantino Nivola, it was great to see Graduate Diploma and MFA students getting to grips with: waste moulds constructed from skip detritus; cardboard formworks bolstered by bandages like broken arms; eggbox columns (via H. R. Giger); pristine cubes made crumpled and burnished; psychedelic foldings in cement; Cocteau reliefs smothered with powdered pigment; tarpaulin volumes suspended in painting stretchers; wooden braces for concrete rings... Fresh! I like the vibrant green, however, I am strongly considering adding some darker accents. What's neat about this stain is it will age as the "secret ingredients" suspended in the acid continue to dissolve and oxidize . In other words, I may not be able to replicate the color and effect it produces, which also the mix design of the concrete plays a role in how the stain will react. The possibilities are truly unlimited and the study of concrete is as well, all the way to the PhD level in several aspects, there is even a concrete countertop institute. I didn't think these were going to set up (harden) because I ran the max amount of plasticizer and water. It's a Very fluid mix unlike what I have been making, which is more like clay.
