Inferring from a few stone artifacts we found in an archaeological survey, about 10,500 years ago some people left from the middle Tennessee Valley in present day north Alabama, carrying at least one preform, a small spearpoint, and other stones for tools. They stopped on a plateau in north central Alabama, worked on their stone tools, and left behind the spearpoint which was worn down from resharpening. They apparently moved on since we only found a few of these stones left behind. Thanks to generations of work by archaeologists matching form with function and time, and matching tool stone with geologic sources, we can begin to put together these small moments in the deep past @cedarsconsultingllc #archaeology #archaeological #alabamaarchaeology #crmarchaeology #artifact #arrowhead #nativeamerican #deeppast #historicalpreservation

Do you know the difference between a coin and a token?  🪙 Coins are minted by governments as official currency, while tokens are privately issued stand-ins during coin shortages. For today's #FindsFriday, check out this 1852 Quebec Bank Token, uncovered from an excavation site here in Ontario. 🪙 Before the establishment of the Royal Canadian Mint in 1908, Canada's coinage primarily consisted of British and foreign coins, alongside private tokens issued by merchants and tokens from Upper and Lower Canada to meet the demand for small change. 💡 Did You Know? Due to a critical shortage of small coins in Lower Canada, four banks were authorized to issue penny and half penny tokens like this one to keep the local economy afloat. This particular token was minted by Ralph Heaton & Co. after the Quebec Bank made repeated requests to ease the coin shortage. 🔄 On the Reverse: Seen here, the token showcases a richly detailed scene featuring a seated figure of Commerce with a cornucopia, set against a cliff, fort, and flag backdrop. Note the beehive and beaver, symbols of industry and perseverance, alongside a sailing ship that hints at the era’s burgeoning trade. 🔍 On the Obverse: A Canadian Habitant, not shown here, dressed in traditional winter attire. These tokens were affectionately known as ‘Papineaus’ after Louis-Joseph Papineau, the leader of the 1837 Rebellion, adding a layer of historical significance to this piece. 🌟 This token not only represents a utilitarian solution during a period of economic adaptation but also serves as a snapshot of Canadian heritage and ingenuity. #archaeology #OntarioArchaeology #crmarchaeology #historicalarchaeology #archaeologist #archaeologists #archaeologylife #archaeologylove #archaeologyadventures #artifact #historicartifacts #HistoryInYourHand #Numismatics #CanadianHistory

Recently, our senior archaeologist Ben Mortimer spent an exciting day examining Middle Woodland (400 B.C. to A.D. 1000) pottery fragments. 🏺🏺 These pieces came from a colleague's excavation, where Ben lent his expertise in identifying their intricate decoration techniques. Among the methods used on these vessels are dentate, pseudo-scallop shell, and cord-wrap-stick stamp decorations. 🔹Pseudo-scallop shell impression features a distinct wavy pattern at different angles. 🔹Dentate stamping creates square impressions, likely made with a comb-like tool, applied either individually or in a rocking motion. 🔹Cord-wrap-stick technique involves impressions produced by the application of a cord-wound stick or twig, adding a unique texture to the pottery. These styles are typically found on the exterior, often covering the entire body with various patterns and orientations. FUN FACT: if you google "dentate stamps middle woodland pottery" Ben’s thesis is one of the first things that comes up! Check it out! - 'Whose Pot Is This? Ever wonder how archaeologists decide where to dig? 🕵️‍♂️🌍 It all starts with some detective work! After initial research, field surveys identify archaeological resources. Test pitting is one of the methods used by archaeologists to determine the presence or absence of archaeological remains in a specific area. By digging small pits across an area, we sample the soil, searching for artifacts or other evidence of past human activity. The findings from test pitting can help archaeologists decide whether further, more detailed excavation is warranted or if the area can be cleared for development. #archaeology #OntarioArchaeology #crmarchaeology #crm #archaeologyfieldwork #fieldwork #archaeologist #archaeologists #archaeologylife #archaeologylove #archaeologyadventures #womeninarchaeology #digginghistory

🌍✨ Happy #EarthDay from Matrix Heritage! ✨🌍 Today, and every day, we celebrate the incredible planet we call home. As archaeologists, we are privileged to work outdoors, constantly reminded of Earth's beauty and the historical footprint of humanity upon it. Archaeology isn't just about unearthing the past; it's about understanding how past peoples interacted with their environment and have affected it over many thousands of years. On Earth Day, and every day, we need to appreciate, protect, and improve the environment for future generations. We're proud to adopt sustainable practices like going paperless with digital documentation. In fact, finding a pen in our office is now as challenging as unearthing a hidden artifact—almost a relic of the past! This Earth Day, we recommit to appreciating, protecting, and enhancing the environment, ensuring that both our history and our planet can be shared with future generations. #archaeology #archaeologyfieldwork #fieldwork #archaeologist #archaeologists #archaeologylife #archaeologylove #archaeologyadventures #canadianarchaeology #OntarioArchaeology #crmarchaeology

11 boxes may not seem like a lot to you, but curating in South Carolina is no easy task these days. Luckily the @charlestonmuseum is a discerning institution and knows an important Lowcountry site when they see one. These boxes contain artifacts from the Laurel Hill Plantation site, which I contend is a Settlement Indian site from say ca. 1810-1830s. I’m excited these artifacts are now housed in the Museum and can’t wait to see what they do with them. Pretty good way to kick the weekend off, so make it a good one folks! #curationblues #crmarch #crmarchaeology

#OnThisDay 35 years ago, archaeologists from R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates were excavating at an archaeological site within Tioga County at @usacebaltimore. It was a very cold January and the crew built a structure around the excavation unit and used a stove to keep the ground from freezing (though it was not completely successful, as seen in the notes). Field notes not only assist archaeologists in writing their final report, it also provides a glimpse into what people find important to note….like when they take their coffee breaks! -- #otd #archaeology #archives #fieldwork #crmarchaeology #veteranscurationprogram Photo 1: Field crew from R.
