My father-in-law passed away in the early hours of Sunday... he was the best father figure any daughter-in-law could ask for. May Allah have mercy on him. When my own father passed away, I sent him a message along the lines of ‘Now you’re the only person left for me to call Abba.’ He truly was the other Abba in my life. Always smiling and putting a positive spin on situations. My father-in-law had a calm and quiet manner. We used to have long and deep conversations about all sorts of topics. He was always active in the family Whatsapp group, sharing wisdom and pictures of flowers. He taught me how to play Scrabble and laughed when I beat him for the first time. And he would tell me off with a laugh about not calling more often. On one occasion, in the midst of being told off, I asked him to forgive me. He laughed and said he wouldn’t. Call more often he said. Even if it’s for a few minutes. The last time I spoke to him was Saturday - half a day before he returned to Allah. And for some reason I had the urge to take screenshots of him talking to each grandson. As if Allah inspired me to capture the last time Rayyan and Ridhwan would say Salaam to their Dhadha. Alhamdulillah I am so grateful that Allah helped us talk that day. Otherwise the anguish would have been greater. But I have to live with the fact that he wanted me to call more often. A hard lesson learnt. Our elders may not say it, but they appreciate being thought of regularly. And some may even be sitting and waiting for that call or message. To anyone reading this who hasn’t spoken to their parents or other elders. Pick up the phone today. To Allah we belong and to Allah we return. Let us return in a manner that pleases Him by fulfilling the rights and wishes of our elders. Please remember my father and father-in-law in your duas.
