I thought I would do another British car post to begin #bluemondaymatchbox today. #matchbox have debuted the MB1424 '77 Jaguar XJ6C in blue in the 2024 basic range. So, I thought I should bring in another blue Jag. In this case, it is the MB332 Jaguar XK8 Convertible. This particular one was the 2000 Euro Sports 5-pack release. It was a fun one to collect. For starters, it looked like the one in picture 2. Notice the 5-star wheels. Then, it saw a change. In picture 4, they updated the wheels to the flower ones in later assortments, as it was still in production as 2001 rolled around, & they were updating wheels. Then, right at the end, there was another small change. You might notice that the one on the right in picture 6 has no window edging. Mini. One of the most iconic of British vehicles. The original ran from August 1959 until October 2000. A little over 41 years. Technically, there were 7 generations during that time, with an average life of close to 6 years per generation. Well, my latest #matchbox blog article is due to arrive tomorrow (hopefully, fingers crossed for no glitches) over on the @wheelcollectors website, along with a @lamleygroup link. This article is about the 2nd Walmart exclusive (if you live in the USA, certain other countries stock it in other stores, although not in Britain, because that wouldn't make sense) batch of the year. The #matchbox MB765 '64 Austin Mini Cooper 1275S sees a lovely olive green look in this series, as it continues with new designs in its 16th year of model production. Way longer than Amy generation of the real Mini. But, here's a daft fact. You know I mentioned that with 7 generations & 41 (+ a bit) years, that would work out as an average of almost 6 years per generation. Well, during the Lesney era, we saw 2 Mini castings. Neither were a standard issue. The MB29-B Racing Mini was, as it says, a racy version. It ran from 1970 through 1975 worldwide. Or 6 years. Yes, it was added to twin packs after, but I was talking about worldwide basics here. The 14-B Mini Ha-Ha was added to the range in 1975 & ran until 1980 worldwide. Or 6 years. Yes, the ROW market continued a year, but again, worldwide basics. & the new Mini is part of a set of 6. Coincidence? Yes, completely. I'm just pointing out there are a lot of 6s. I'm a nerd. MB Construction or Matchbox Construction? Which is better? Back in 1991, #matchbox released the MB186 Dodge Dakota in an Action Pack in an MB Construction theme. However, that theme never took off. Who knew that all they needed to do was pad out the name & recolour it to make the theme take off. Ha ha! Sunday shelves and this week I continue with three more shelves from my Collectibles themed display cabinet. Starting on the top shelf in the centre, you'll see three Emerald Green cars released in 2007 and they all have the 55th Anniversary logo on them... Austin Mini Van, Lexus GS430 and '72 Ford Bronco. To the right of these you'll see a Boeing 747 which also has a 55th Anniversary livery. All the other models on this shelf are from the Lesney Edition series which was a division of the Superfast Series in 2010 & 2011. Each model is detailed on all sides and is fully diecast including the base. The middle shelf celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Matchbox in 2013. You’ll see two different versions of the double decker Routemaster Buses on the left. The chrome red version at the front was a Chase model and to the best of my knowledge, was the first time Matchbox created a chase. I still remember the day I found mine at Target Forest Hill back in the day. The bottom shelf commemorates the 65th Anniversary of Matchbox and also the first few models from Mix 1 of the Superfast 50th Anniversary series. Now, the light blue gem coloured cars which are in a line next to black BMW Police car, were released in 2018 for the 65th Anniversary. They were exclusive to Target USA, with the exception of the Jaguar E-Type Coupe from the Coffee Cruisers 5 Pack. They had different artwork on the packaging with the 65th logo and were considered Sapphire Chases. #matchbox is going Bronco crazy at the moment. Until 2020, there had been a grand total of 2 Bronco castings. A Bronco II & a '72 4x4. But then, Ford brought out a new Bronco & with it a 2, or 4-door version. Matchbox created both. The larger in basics (MB1247 debuting in 2021) & the smaller in Moving Parts (MB1317 debuting in 2022). Both have seen some harder to find expensive releases. The larger was a 2022 Super Chase in white. The smaller was a 2022 Mattel Creations in silver & black. In the last 6 months, they have greatly enhanced their Bronco tooling as a Sport arrived & 2 classics are now appearing. I wonder if & when they might see premium outings? Particularly the classics. Ford Pickups have been around for a very long time. The Ford Model TT saw 3 units sold in 1917. The F-series has become the biggest seller in the USA. Sold since 1948, now in its 14th generation, they have added an electric version to the mix. The Ford F-150 Lightning, which #matchbox makes as MB1295. After a few grey outings, the 2024 MBX Electric Drivers 5-pack sees a lovely dark red look for the model. A similar look adorned the MB300 2nd generation F-series, as the '56 Ford Pickup was released in a slightly darker shade in the USA 2005 Superfast series. The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the River Porciúncula. Sound familiar? Perhaps in its original Spanish. El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Ángeles del Río Porciúncula. What a mouthful. It is so much easier being called Los Angeles. LA became the 2nd largest city in the USA in the 1970s, when it overtook Chicago. It's still not as big as NYC. It has about half the population, but about the same area of land. Every now & again, we see an LA themed #matchbox model, with the latest being the MB1190 Nissan NV Van. It was a part of the 2024 basic range, although I do believe the livery is a Matchbox original design. It looks cool. Plus, you may notice that the 2 sides are different. I do love a surprise. Like back in 2007 when the MB662 City Bus surprised us with all 3 LA looks in 1 go. Stacked up in picture 2 are the basic range releases for orange Local & red Rapid routes. Whereas the blue Express appeared in a 10-pack. Of course, these were not the first LA themed models. If you go back to late 1981, you will find 2x Mercury Park Lane models. Released as a part of a promotional Code Red series in the USA, an early licence, this was a tie-in to a new TV series there, which didn't take off. But it lives on with the models. In 1982, when they created the MAN system, they randomly assigned the police car as MB112 & fire Chief as MB114. Considering all other releases of this model we're assigned as MB859, rolled over into the MAN system from the 1977 twin pack numbering system for non-basics. The latest release of the #matchbox MB1179 '16 Ford Interceptor Utility from the 2023 basic range (& 2024 carry forward 5-pack) meets up with an older police utility vehicle. The MB512 Robot Truck. Quite an unusual vehicle, but it has good play value, plus something in common with the Interceptor. A tow hook. Being white, I went with the 2001 debut of the Robot Truck, where it arrived, exclusively in the US range, as MB51. The fun part with this was that the radar on the top would lift up (see pictures 3 & 4), then the side door would open to reveal said Robot (see pictures 5 & 6). Considering all the 2000-2004 Matchbox originals castings that debuted, this was 1 of my favourites. I thought it was a fun & unique vehicle. It saw action until 2007 (the last issue was actually a re-issue of a 2004 Haunted House with updated logo & Thai base) before retirement. Taxi! It's Friday night (well, it is here in the UK), which means taxis are a little more common on the road. So, this seems the right time to do a little #matchbox taxi post. Do you know what the connection between these 2 taxis are? Both were originally created as civilian cars, then altered later into taxis. In both cases, the modification meant the original civilian car was never used again. They are the only 2 models to have that distinction. Many civilian cars have had taxi liveries. No modification. A few police cars have been modified into taxis & used alongside the police version. But, these are the only 2 to see a proper transition. The latest MB1025 Toyota Prius Taxi appeared in the 2023 9-packs as an exclusive. This has seen a few looks. Sadly, the MB056 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL Taxi only saw the 1 look in 1981/82 before being modified again into a police car. I'm now wondering if this Prius will ever see a further modification into a police car?
