. I am still wallowing in the memories of our last trip. Especially the precious time spent with my dear brother and the whole family. As I looked at the photos, I remembered another one from the last time we were all together. That was six years ago when they visited us in Switzerland. I’m calling this one a HALF Disappearing 9 Patch because by cutting your #9patch in half only once, you get 3 solid squares and 3 rectangle/half squares for a fun look! A used a mix of charm packs and scrappy fabric, some from @swansonsfabrics to make this as colorful and old timey looking as possible. I alternated the direction my sets were so it was more of a puzzle than a straight repeat. It came together very quickly. After sewing the blocks together, I sewed 5 inch strip scraps together into strip rolls (2nd photo). I love a #scrappyquilt look and can’t wait to use these strips into another project. A couple months after finishing this half #disappearing9patch #quilt I added a tan flannel border around it. I’ll try to find a photo of that. Nachdem der "Tag der Arbeit" bei bestem Wetter um kurz nach 6 Uhr mit Kaffee in Reichweite an der Nähmaschine gestartet ist, ging es gut voran. Vorm Frühstück waren bereits die gestern angefangenen Tops für 10 Tischläufer und 4 Deckchen fertig. Nach dem Frühstück hab ich dann 6 Varianten der Oh my stars Läufer ausgelegt und die in Reihe weggenäht. Die Tops waren dann bis zum Abendessen fertig. Danach hab ich vier weitere Varianten - diesmal in schwarz/weiß - ausgelegt. Diese hab ich aktuell schon in Reihen genäht, aber da geht's dann morgen mit weiter. Nach insgesamt 240 Sternspitzen reicht es dann auch für heute. . While vacationing in California at my brother's house I have the pleasure to reunite with this quilt I made for my sister-in-law almost ten years ago. It is such a pleasure to have it in our guest room on our bed. Thank you, Sarah, for this lovely surprise. This is Cathe, 190 x 145 cm, 2015 This is the very first quilt that started my tradition of making each familiy member a quilt for a round birthday. Always a disappearing nine patch, always different. It's the first time I'm seeing Cathe again and I'm happy to say I'd make it exactly so again. We are having a wonderful vacation. First ten days in Texas with solar eclipse and meeting friends again after 15 years. Now in California with staying with my brother, spending time with him, my sister-in-law, my three nephews and girlfriends. So many precious moments, so many feelings and emotions. I've shared a lot in the stories about our outings and I think I will also add a few posts to the feed once back home next week. Madeline & I entered our local quilt show last month and both brought home ribbons!! I got a 2nd place for the guild challenge blocks (had a piece of fabric we had to use to create any 12" block!) I used In a snap polaroid fpp block by @kitschempire Madeline took 3rd place in the youth quilt division with a quilt she made during our guild's youth quilting camp last summer. She made this beautiful #disappearingninepatch as a gift for her beastie! My #riverglenquilt by @seams_sew_me took 3rd place in the small machine quilted division. I pieced it, but the GORGEOUS quilting was done by @the.quilting.alchemist - credit where credit is due - she made it shine!!! 💕

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you find time to do something lovely today. Yesterday was a #binding day. I finally finished the hand quilting on a single quilt I've been making and yesterday I had a few peaceful hours to sit and hand sew the binding. The sun was shining through the window, everyone in the house was busy doing their thing and I got to sit and sew! A seriously rare moment. The result was that I got much further than I expected. I finished the final 6 inches this morning and I have a finished quilt! It's now having its cold wash to remove any chalk marks and then I will share some photos. All pieced together before bed time! Sorry about the filter… it’s much nicer colours in real life! I love the unplanned patterns - and very glad there isn’t an unplanned swastika emerging from the blocks. My first 9-square used 4 squares of the pretty Viyella with a red leaf and 4 big plaid squaresl around a central dark blue square. Then you cut that sewn up 9-square into quarters. I realised the overall design would be too regular if I kept to that patterning - and that I’d run out of the Viyella too fast. I chose textiles with a similar colour and pattern because I wanted an overall unity rather than a super bright screechy colour and pattern fight going on. Keeping the central square of each nine-patch dark blue was really key to the overall pattern. I can’t believe how tiny they ended up! The size of the original nine-patch squares was 15cm and I used a 1cm seam. The big random border really helps calm the central pattern and add some extra Viyella red leaf pattern across the whole thing. I realised how much maths and decision-making goes into a traditional quilt and how important it is not to start piecing until you have all the elements laid out. #disappearingninepatch

Good Friday… I spent the day piecing together this #disappearingninepatch quilt made with some of my mum’s textiles and some of my own. I’ve been wanting to do this for ages… it’s my first attempt at a ‘big’ quilt… but I’m not sure if it’s big enough! It’s just under a meter wide by 110cm tall and I think maybe I need to make it bigger with a wide border. Any suggestions? I’m feeling a bit deflated at the moment… like “why did I waste my day doing this?” I’d really appreciate some positive vibes!

Knappe Kiste, sag‘ ich Euch 😅! Erinnert Ihr Euch an den Improv Disappearing Nine Patch von letzter Woche? Alles Upcyclingstoffe und mit dabei eine neonfarbene Bluse. Die Rückseite dieser Bluse hat genau für 6,80 Meter Binding gereicht. 6,50 Meter brauche ich. Um Material zu sparen, habe ich schmalere Streifen als beim klassischen Binding zugeschnitten und mit dem Schrägbandformer von Prym in Form gebügelt. Passt 👍! Dann habe ich auch noch bei @smartthread das passende Garn zum Quilten gefunden. Ja, da braucht man direkt eine Sonnenbrille, so sehr leuchtet das alles 😎. My new machine gave me the kick I needed to pull this top from sometime last year out of storage and finish it up at a retreat this weekend. The inspo came from the Dr Seuss fabric I grabbed from a free table. I used it as the foundation of disappearing nine patch blocks. The rest of the fabrics were from stash; the two different yellows are due to limited yardage more than a design decision. The back used the rest of the Dr Seuss fabric as a whole (it was a bit off-grain…), and was pieced using whatever chunks I had left from the front. Looks like I didn’t baste it very squarely (we won’t talk about the back@puckers, either. Whoops.). I also added my label upside down from the print direction 🤷‍♀️. I quilted it with a loose meander, mixing in a few stars (upon thars) here and there. The top thread is variegated shades of yellow, but that is barely noticeable. The bobbin is a solid light yellow. It finished at 62” square so plenty large for cuddling under by whoever I end up gifting/donating it to. #kidquilt #throwquilt #disappearingninepatch #drseuss #littlerebelsewingmachine #whatraemade

#igquiltfest2024day2 First Quilt! This is actually the second (person sized) quilt I made, but the first that I kept. Also the first where I designed my own pattern…. And failed on the corner math 🤣 I started with the ever lovely @carolynfriedlander fabrics, added a few solids, quilted it super quickly and got it done in time for the @bostonmqg show in 2013. So many firsts with this one, and a few “only” too. Straight line quilting, solids, blenders, Kona Snow (gasp!). Not at all what I gravitate to now, but still pretty me. Meet my first quilt (and wonderful model, Lyra, my cat)! My first foray into quilting was a Queen sized Disappearing Nine Patch quilt - apparently I don’t do anything by halves! It’s definitely not perfect (whose first quilt ever is) and I could point out the wobbly lines, mismatched points and “adventurous” stitch length, or I could focus on remembering lounging on it during lakeside picnics in the woods on glorious summer days, or hearing Lyra’s purrs echoing through the house as she kneads it. In case you missed it, On January 9 the guild had mini demos about disappearing blocks from three of our own—Cheryl Moore, June Silberman, and Bronwyn Mohlke. For the uninitiated, a disappearing block is a way to make new block designs from simple and traditional blocks such as the pinwheel, four- or nine-patches, or the hourglass.
