🪔Happy Diwali 🪔 We are a few days late in posting but that doesn’t mean we didn’t celebrate! Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights. The Festival of Lights celebrates the Hindu New Year. It is a celebration of the victory of light over darkness and the triumph of good over evil. There are lots of ways to celebrate including decorating the home with bright colours, flowers, lights and Rangoli patterns. Children get small gifts and sweets and it’s a time to spend with family. I love Diwali and used to teach my nursery children about it every year. Caleb chose the colours for our rice and both wildlings coloured the rice with paint. 🪔Diwali Play!🪔 A quick sensory rice #tufftrayplay this afternoon after nap! Alfie scooped, poured, filled the egg cups, wiggled the pipe cleaners and swept the rice. He loved picking it up and hearing it fall on the tray! 👌🏻rice play is a great base for fine motor skills and sensory experiences. ⬇️if you have a younger baby and don’t want to use rice, coloured oats would work as a taste-safe option for this one.

🪔 Diwali 🪔 I love the colours and patterns of Diwali so set up this play tray so that we could create our own rangoli patterns. My son went straight for the jewels and started picking out his favourite colour (purple) and lining them up. We counted how many there were and he then decided to get another colour and line those up too. He ended up with an amazing pattern, all of his own creation! He also enjoyed using his magnetic tiles to create shapes and patterns - this proved a great problem solving activity as some shapes fitted better together than others. The jewels ended up on top too! I let my son lead with this one and he came up with some great play ideas. 🪔 I wasn’t planning on setting up a sensory play idea for Diwali but decided to do one totally last minute! I used leftover orange rice from Halloween, added some cardamom in the shape of a diva as it smells like the spices we use in our food, some steel utensils as we traditionally use these in our cooking and a flower. I’ll be honest and say I’m not ready to let A explore traditional rangoli powders as I’m finding with two little ones, mess can be quite triggering for me and I’m choosing my sanity over a pretty Instagram pic. So on the other side I simply placed some cupcake holders with colourful pom poms. I’m not quite sure how A will explore this but I’m excited to find out! During Diwali we traditionally wear and decorate with bright loud colours to symbolize the victory of light over darkness. I can’t wait to tell my children some of our traditional stories tonight and we are so lucky my mother in law has flown out last night to celebrate Diwali with us this year. DIY DIYA WREATH. Sharing another short sweet Diwali themed activity. 🪔 Gave Missy kitchen towel. 🪔 Next mixed food colours (chosen ofcourse by Missy) with water. 🪔 Gave Missy a dropper. Rest was nothing but lots of fun and independent play for Missy. She was happy mixing colours and creating abstract art 😁. We revised our concepts of 👍CAPILLARY ACTION 👍Water being colourless and taking colour of things DISSOLVED in it. 🪔 Then I cut circles out of the paper towel. 🪔 Missy and I folded them and pasted the glittery flame. 🪔 We put them on our wreath with my favorite "tack its". FIZZY FIRECRACKERS 🧨 AND SENSORY SALT TRAY. 🪔 So here i made a firecracker 🧨(Anaar) for Missy on and from old cardboard. 🪔First Missy had to practice small letter writing in the 🔺️ of the fire cracker which had salt. 🪔 Next was super fun and messy play with soda, vinegar and loads of glitters 🤪😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁. 🪔 In the spirit of Diwali we did loads of fun and learning🙂👍 Missy's dad was guest of honor to witness the 🧨 🧨 🧨 🧨 🧨 🧨 😁. Must say the messy play too had its own hidden advantages with lots of emphasis on honing fine motor skills. Diwali is here and the decorations are going up! Rangoli is a type of patterned art without which Diwali is pretty much incomplete and so I decided to give Little Nim an opportunity to make his very own (almost mess free) Rangoli. I cut out some squares on contact paper, my new found friend, and stuck them on the window with the sticky side out. Nim was then handed over little bits of coloured tissue paper which he stuck onto the squares after observing me do it a few times. Rangolis are often made using a variety of geometric figures but we decided to stick to one shape to make it simpler and so that we could focus on one shape name. Other than being lovely for fine motor skills, this activity is a great opportunity to introduce shapes and colours. Diwali Is round the corner and you guys know that I have planned some activities to do with Shraddhu. And here goes the first Diya Painting 🪔 It’s not an activity for Shraddhu but a Bonding time for Mummy & Baby. Sharing something which I did. 👉I placed newspapers to avoid any paint on floor 👉 I kept the Color’s, brush, Diya’s all ready on the paper before inviting Shraddhu. I kept only limited Color’s for her to choose from. 👉I offered her choice to choose Colors 👉I offered her different brushes to paint with 👉I hold the Diya for sometime so gets a hold on the brush 👉I didn’t give jerk reactions when she put her fingers on the paint What I observed : 👉She liked Yellow and then liked Black more - she even asked for a black pyjama when we were reading a book 👉She wanted to try different brushes and ezperiment with the strokes 👉She even picked up a play stick and used that for painting 👉She wanted to touch black Color and started finger painting 👉When I reminded her to see her hands she saw that her hands have paint stains and wanted to immediately wash off her hands ✅We planned this activity to be the first thing in the morning right after breakfast so she can go to bath once the activity is done. ✅I joined her during the activity so both of us were involved. It was Rangoli time today for little S.... While didi was in school. This was a very quick n simple idea to engage her in #diwaliplay I gathered whatever was in my pantry. To make this #playdoh #rangoli set up for her. -Rajma -Sabudana -Spaghetti -Chana Daal -Pistachio shells I showed her once how to make rangoli out of these and then she quickly picked up, all she kept asking was ”Mumma help, where to make flower”😆 She meant to ask about the centre of the circular playdoh base I gave her. After about 6-7 rangoliz she took it to the whole new level by putting the spaghetti pieces vertical!!! Making it a 3D rangoli. . . Diwali play ideas 🎇 diya painting. Diya lamps are traditionally used to light up homes at diwali. They are made out of clay and are lit with a cotton wick dipped in ghee or oil. We brought our diyas from a Indian shop in Southall. You can purchase these from @ebay_uk and @amazon. Just search for clay diyas. We painted ours using normal poster paint and glitter. Fireworks artwork- Diwali play ideas🎇 Using a salad spinner, we got ours from @ikeauk for £4.50 cut some paper into circles so it fits the bottom of the salad spinner. Add a few blobs of paint on to the paper, close the lid and spin!! So much fun and the boys loved it!!! Diwali play ideas 🎇 edible sparklers A great, simple activity to do on a Rainy Saturday afternoon. All you need is chocolate fingers, some hot water and sprinkles. Dip the chocolate fingers into some hot water and then dip it into the sprinkles. You can leave them to set, if the little people let you!
