Day 123 Christmas Rottweilers for Janelle. Why do I love this picture so much? Because I had so much fun drawing it over several days. Because it was a huge challenge to layout the two dogs on one page and get it balanced. Because for my practise sketch I tried a new technique for shading that worked (and I was drawing it at the waterfront Bar n Townsville over looking the water drinking G and T’s and Margaritas- see Margarita pug drawing day 122). Because I planned out my drawing, drew my plan, and it came out even better than I hoped. Because I had heaps of fun scheming with my work colleagues how to obtain photos of these two rottweilers without Janelle realising what we were up to. Because I filmed awesome time-lapse of the entire process (next to-do is to work out how to turn these into viewable reels). Because it was a ‘secret santa’ gift and I had to plot how to ensure that this gift landed with Janelle (it did and then she realised someone else didn’t have a gift and was about to give it to them...). Because Janelle has it in a frame on her desk and I get to admire it every day at work and remember how much fun the whole experience was, and this makes me smile. Every time. Day 122 So what happens when a Dog artist walks into a beachside bar for happy hour, pulls out her sketch book and draws a rottweiler (spoiler alert for next sketch release)? Well nothing happened until after the second gin and tonic and the barman spies the finished sketch. Which led to happy sketch artist drawing the barman’s (David) mum’s pug. Day 120-121 I love that I can take pencils and a sketch pad anywhere and everywhere. Valentine of course is an aspiring sketch-artists dream! That long nose. Those eyebrows! but I was flying out to Townsville shortly after I took the photo. So a quick 15 minute sketch of him lying down while I waited to board, and another of his face in the Brisbane airport lounge the next day. I was almost wishing for the flight to be delayed so I could keep drawing. Until I realised that I could also pull out my sketch book on the plane! The face sketch was deliberately more of a cartoon style. I think it captures the ‘feel’ of Valentine. Day 119 This beautiful bluey passed away much too early in life. I had been chatting to these people at the cafe about Ruby, my stumpy-tailed blue heeler and they shared their story about losing Bingo earlier in the year. I asked if they had a picture that I could try drawing. I wanted to capture his ‘look’. A bit of ‘ yeah, whatdoyawant’, or ‘Yes, I am sitting here, so what about it’. I finished the drawing after they had left the cafe, sent them the photo of the pic, and a few weeks later ran into them again and gave them the original. I am really enjoying sharing the drawings with people. Days 117-118 Playing with pastels at art class. I love ‘Sadie’. She reminds me of the sad french clown Pierrot. That was not what I intended when I drew her but that what she brings to mind. For anyone looking for a good intro to art class, I can highly recommend the 8 week Wednesday evenings course run at the Belconnen arts centre. Each evening introduces a different medium (charcoal, watercolour, ink, pastel, oil, graphite, acrylics, perspective and shading). Goes through the basics, enough for me to know I don’t like ink - too messy, and think I may give pastels a go once I’m happy with graphite. The main advantage of graphite is that I can easily take my drawing kit anywhere, and it doesn’t get messy. Very important since most my drawing is down in the cosy corner of my local cafe. I don’t think the owner would appreciate paint everywhere. River the border collie was looking very happy in her space under the table. Days 111-116 More regulars at my local cafe. Lily looking very sad waiting. Actually, that’s wrong. I think her humans were sitting beside her. she always looks slightly sad. I love the older gentleman, ‘Eyebrows’, a mixed breed rescue dog. Then there is Ash, another well-loved staffy mix. She is a honey. Louie the face is one of my favourites. The dog that never stands still (previously drawn on day 83 when he had a sore foot after a snake bite). And then there’s the ‘carpet dog’. I’m not totally comfortable working with colour yet, the dogs come out looking like cartoon figures. Days 91-96 JUST DRAW! Revisiting some of my favourites and trying fast, freehand sketching. approx 5 minutes per picture. Great for when I don't have much time in the morning to do my sketching practice. Even if I only have 15 minutes over my morning coffee, it's really important to me to maintain the drawing habit. so the quick sketches are great for that, and I don't stress about them not being perfect. The aim is JUST DRAW. The border colie and poodle cross I was trialling using graphite sticks for sketching. I had tried charcoal sticks but soooo messy and I feel very uncomfortable with the lack of precision. The sticks are a good compromise. I noticed that I instantly felt more comfortable drawing larger pictures, and I had to in order to fit in the detail I wanted. I like the shading in the poodle cross. Day 85 I took a road trip to Adaminaby and spent a nice afternoon outside the pub having a drink and sketching the mixed breed cattle dog, waiting oh so patiently for her human to finish his beer/s. I haven’t been to Adaminaby for ages. Highly recommend it for a day trip. Came back via Tumut, overnight in Young, and stopped for coffee in Boorowa and challenged myself with this sausage dog sitting outside the main street cafe. I have really struggled drawing the proportions of little long dogs (I’m always having to fight my inner urge to make every dog look like a border collie 🙂). This guy turned out ok. Day 83 Snakebit foot Snakebite. Luckily his human was literally driving past the Vet when Louie started being sick. He must have been bitten about 30 minutes earlier when playing in the wetlands. Brown snake bites are usually deadly for dogs. There is a very small window of time to get vet treatment. Louie was at the vet for days, and it was touch and go for a while. But here he is. Day 74 Practising fast lines. Mostly I draw while having an espresso at my local café before work. This has been great for building the drawing habit – tie the new habit with an existing habit. But, it does mean that other than the weekends I have only an hour to finish my drawing, and sometimes less. As I am posting on Instagram some months after having started drawing (it wasn’t until 2-3 months after I started that people began asking if I had an artist page. And then it took me another two months to learn how to use Instagram….) I realise that this was a blessing in disguise as it forced me to finish a drawing even if it wasn’t ‘perfect’ and not to stuff around too long on fiddly details. Day 71 - again Good dog, woeful human Omg, once again I’ve made the human face look like a toad. Not even a good toad. I suck at drawing people, the arm is way to long, the legs are weird. Il y a quelques mois j'avais demandé qui serait partant pour être mon cobaye afin que je m'entraîne à faire des sceaux, et ma merveilleuse amie @gronde_lorage (aussi connue pour être une artiste de talent sous le nom d' @alliance_dessences) à accepté. . Alors j'ai eu l'idée, en voyant ses storys, de dessiner un petit quelque chose qui, je pense, pourrait lui faire plaisir. Day 71 3 dogs and 1 croissant. What could go wrong? Well nothing. They all waited patiently for their piece of ham or cheese. I love this picture. It captures the essence of a Sunday morning at the local café. Happy dogs, friends with each other and their regular humans. This is Karen, Willow (orange kelpi-coolie cross), Duke (Tan border collie) and Ruby (Stumpy tail blue-heeler). Karen regularly shares her ham and cheese croissant with the canines. So she is a popular human amongst the dogs (and also people 😊). The drawing was a fast, and drawn entirely freehand without a ruler or grid. Day 66 Oh give me the Blues! I couldn’t leave this lovely blue heeler alone. I had to keep drawing him. So much character. He was howling when ignored. I laughed so much. Had to sketch that moment, as well as his characteristic side tilt look. One of my drawing aims is to be able do quick caricatures of dogs. This is one of my early attempts, happy with the outcome, but a ways to go being quick, and creating the cartoon caricature look. Day 63 First time using a drawing grid to help layout proportions. Um can anyone help out with what breed of dog this is? After 62 days of deliberately not using a grid measure, or tracing to help me draw, this feels like ‘cheating’. But OMG Amazing- I can draw a sausage dog without it looking like a noodle moosh. Yep an instant fan of the grid method. This little guy was so funny. Here he was hypnotising a café patron into sharing his bacon burger. Committed to the cause! Dedicated, committed, and wagging tail all at the same time. Note the tongue licking lips. For the grid I ruled up an A4 page with a 1cm x 1cm grid with thick enough lines that I could see through the sketchbook paper. I used an app called ‘gridpainter‘ that can overlay a grid on a photo. While it sounds easy, using the grid, there are definitely tips and tricks to making it work. And pitfalls – as I discovered the next day….. On the plus side, being confident with my proportions, I can settle in and focus on shading, and capturing beautiful doggy features. Day 65 and 66 I initially rode past these two cattle dogs, but I couldn’t get them out of my head, turned around, rode back, and asked if I could take their picture. Banjo (16 year old Bluey) and Nischke were moving their head in unison as their humans chatted. They’d just been for a beach swim and looked pretty damn happy. Such characters. As were their humans. They were all best friends🙂 I passed a happy evening drawing these guys. For the outline I used the 1 cm grid, there was just too much detail to spend time freehanding and risking getting key proportions wrong. I focused on the change in hair direction, and capturing their upturned faces. Day 64 Epic drawing fail Pearl the Merle at the ice-cream shop I saw Pearl outside my favourite Townsville ice-cream shop, Juliettes. She was eyeing off my double cone. No way was I giving up any ice-cream. I was struck by her eye colour, and wondered if I could capture that with my basic pencils. First of all, I sketched out Pearl with the grid. And made a classic beginner mistake. Drawing from both the top and bottom grid lines, my drawing didn’t meet in the middle. I had incorrectly counted the vertical grid boxes. Doh! So, start over, lesson learned – even though I mark out the edge corners of my grid, work from either the top or bottom only in case I have made a counting mistake. Day 62 Zorro - my first giveaway Each drawing becomes part of my story and the thought of ripping the page out and giving the sketch away is painful. Like losing a memory. But, for Zorro I made an exception. This lovely old fella is a regular walker past the run down ‘renovators delight’ house I was renovating in Townsville. He has seen it go from abandoned crack house to lovely old lady that people love to live in. His human I correctly guessed did not have a mobile phone, so sending him a photo of the drawing (my usual) was not an option. I made the decision to sketch knowing I was going to give away the drawing, kinda like being a surrogate mother (noting as a mother that childbearing is way more complex). I love Zorro’s wise old face. So many dog stories shine through. And the devotion to his devoted human. Walks at least twice a day. A happy couple indeed. Day 61 Mumu at Cotters Market in Townsville I just love drawing older dogs. A life story of love and dedication in their face, sometimes with a touch of sadness. I wonder, do they know their time is nearing? Or do they find themselves, as I am from time to time, just tired of life. Tired of how unkind people can be to other people, or dogs, or other animals, or even themselves. Dogs seem to have an almost indefatigable tolerance for bad behaviour whilst still staying devoted to their chosen humans. I was chatting to Mumu’s human’s. Beautiful people, also on the aging side of life. Mumu is one of the lucky dogs. Actually, to be fair, all the dogs I meet at outings are lucky dogs. Their devoted humans are including them in whatever human activities they can. And so often I can capture faces of joy. Oh, I just had a fleeting thought of poor dogs in a Dog Pound. I don’t think I could draw those faces without crying. On a technical note (when feeling too emotional always return to the technical- or pat a dog) I drew this largely freehand, only using rough pencil length measures. And I completed it before Mumu and her humans finished their breakfast.
