Suzy Parker models Givenchy, 1952, photographed by Henry Clarke. Suzy Parker was born October 28th, 1932 as Cecilia Ann Renee Parker in Long Island City, New York and died in Montecito, California on May 3rd, 2003. Suzy's original names came from her mother's three best friends. Her father disliked the name Cecilia and called her Susie, the name Parker answered to for the rest of her life, although a French Vogue photographer later changed the spelling to "Suzy". Her career lasted from 1947 to 1970, gracing magazine covers and appearing in film and television. Veronica Howell, in her obituary tribute to Parker in the Guardian newspaper, wrote: ‘Liking mystery, she often rewrote her early life’. (Inadvertently, Howell proved her own point by reporting Parker’s birth year as 1933.) The story that is always told - with some stating Parker was 14 and others 15 - is that Parker’s older sister by 15 years, who had changed her name to Dorian Leigh, telephoned the Eileen and Jerry Ford at their top New York modeling agency and told them that she would sign with them if they also took her kid sister, sight unseen. The pale, dark-haired, 5’ 5” Dorian Leigh was such a successful model that they agreed. They were shocked when they met Suzy Parker, who was big-boned, sporting carrot red hair, pale-green eyes, and freckles. She would become more famous than Dorian. Eileen Ford, later said of Parker: "She was the most beautiful creature you can imagine; she was everybody's everything." While still in high school in Jacksonville, Florida and the Garden Day School in New York, Parker modeled for the photographer, Milton H. Greene, who proclaimed that she “redefined elegance”. At the age of 15, Parker's photo appeared in Life magazine and she landed her first print advertisements for DeRosa Jewelry. She graced the cover of about 70 magazines across her long career. In addition, to Vogue and Life, she was the “cover girl” of Elle, Paris Match, McCall’s, Redbook, and Look and Redbook, to name just a few. Willy Rizzo was an Italian-born, Paris-residing photographer and furniture designer, most well-known for his photos of Marilyn Monroe and Winston Churchill. (Suzy and Dorian’s relationship seems to have ended in the spring of 1957 when a few days after the Marquis of Portago (Alfonso de Portago) died in a horrific crash racing in the final Mille Miglia, Suzy, while shooting a film with Cary Grant, told a gossip columnist that Dorian had had an illegitimate son in France, Kim, with de Portago.
