This morning, I saw a picture of Kate Moss posing with an elephant and instantly thought of the legendary Richard Avedon photos of Dovima, a ‘50s supermodel, with elephants. In Avedon’s image the elephants, aping Dovima’s pose, lift their lumbering legs and flick their trunks up in an attempt at elegance. They, like us, want to mimic the beautiful lady, want to be her. Her slender grace is emphasised by their gargantuan glory. The smooth porcelain of her skin gleams against the wrinkled pachyderms. These jumbos could crush her if the shoot went wrong, but they don’t; Dovima has dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. It seems wrong now to use elephants for a fashion shoot, but these elephants were already circus performers, used to exploitation. While circus animals are a thing of the past, fashion still exploits animals, using their precious skins, pelts, feathers, and scales to create sumptuous fur coats, python Birkins, and so on. In Arthur Elgort’s photos of Kate Moss, she appears more at one with the elephant, more in touch with nature, a Wild Waif-Woman Archetype with bare feet and a bare face. Kate is famously short for a runway model, and she looks tiny atop the elephant, unlike Dovima, who somehow still looks statuesque before the beasts. Kate’s elephant seems demure, soothed by her presence in the photo where she’s holding the trunk. The photos are from a impossibly glamorous location shoot in Nepal for Vogue, but the styling of the effortless garments and simplicity of the composition present the fantasy of Kate as a wild child, a supermodel Mowgli. Avedon’s and Elgort’s images are incredible, though ethically dubious (like much great art). Richard Avedon, one of the 20th century’s leading fashion and portrait photographers, took these photos of Prince in 1982 + 1995. I’ve always loved the ’95 call back to the original ’82 photo. Together, it’s as if Prince, with his hands, wanted to physically embody his original love symbol (male + female gender symbols combined, no trumpet-y portion yet). In this small, lovely, lichen colonized dolostone from the Manitoulin shore of Lake Huron’s North Channel there happened to vibrate the essence of something feminine. In my painterly exploration, I remembered a photo from an old, musty-second-hand-book I had acquired that I was sure had an image that resonated with the shape and feel of this little rock. The book is a collection of photographs by Richard Avedon. The image of model and fashion maven, China Machado is what the old paleolithic dolostone rock was calling forth - as such things happen in my studio. Both Richard Avedon and China Machado made imprints on the human world during their lives - and here in my world (and now yours) also. Honoring friend, colleague, and brilliant photographer Sergio Goes who left us far far too early. Curated exhibitions of his work at the long-shuttered Sisu Gallery on Nuuanu Avenue in downtown Honolulu, and elsewhere. We moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn around the same time when I was accepted to the Whitney ISP Curatorial Fellowship and he worked briefly for renowned photographer Richard Avedon.
