Here is Grade 4 is practicing the technique of pointillism using tempera paint and pencil erasers! Because French painter Seurat (1859-1891) used a basic sketch on canvas before he began dabbing on his paint, the tigerartists used simple line coloring sheets, outlining Seurat's 1884 Bathers at Asnières, to guide them as they worked. Seurat's large picture (6' 7" x 9' 10") was his first major composition, painted when he had not yet turned 25. He intended it to be a grand statement showing several men and boys relaxing in the sun on the banks of the Seine. Although Seurat was often drawn to similar sites and subjects as the Impressionists and employed the same color theories, his treatment was radically different. This picture was much larger than most Impressionist paintings and it was executed in one or two sessions in the studio rather than outdoors in just one.
