Feeling pretty honored and elated. My dear friend @tori.marsh and I traveled together to the Maine Art Education Conference in Orono where we presented each other and received these awards. Thank you so much to all of the people who have loved me, mentored me, encouraged me…Constant Albertson and Laurie Hicks, Stephanie Leonard…thank you to @mehasian and @taramorin for nominating me. ALIX GILLIAN MARTIN Alix has held a deep love of creating since she was a little girl. She thrived whenever she was able to explore what she was curious about and when she could settle into the cozy space of play and art. When she was a teenager she began working at an arts camp that she attended as a child. She has had the opportunity to work with many students in a variety of settings. She began creating art for community events at the Farnsworth Art Museum and teaching at the CMCA. With two little boys in tow, she would carry a drawing book everywhere and seek out ways to be creative while making rock sculptures on the beach, painting her couches, and sometimes ferociously drawing in her sketchbook whenever possible. She has lived on islands and she has lived on the mainland and she has taught and facilitated art whenever possible. Perhaps one of the most special things about receiving this award, is that Alix didn’t do very well in school. She always wanted to know what was behind the worksheet, she wanted to know the love stories that preceded the facts. She is so grateful to have had the opportunity to live a creative life and to surround herself with children who are willing to approach the world with their heart first. She now lives on North Haven Island where she teaches art, makes art and lives with her husband and two boys who are now 9 and 11. (The little blurb I wrote about myself to share at the award ceremony). Today at the studio we made COMICS! We Started off by creating a fun animal character (a classic staple for #comics and #cartoons alike!) giving them a little back story that we then turned into a comic ‘Dog with a job!’ What’s his job, what’s the deal? Ho in particolare il privilegio di lavorare con i bambini: curiosità pura, intuizioni illuminati, divertimento autentico e creatività esplosiva. •••> È uno spettacolo prezioso osservarli, condividere con loro momenti di apprendimento gioioso, ed è con questo spirito cari genitori che, ringraziandovi per la fiducia, vi chiedo di restare con noi. <••• Quanta bellezza abbiamo condiviso e quanto abbiamo imparato per i nostri piccoli e insieme a loro. Perché no, magari anche in pomeriggio in cui hanno giocato con i colori, ascoltato storie, aperto il loro cuoricino a nuove forme espressive mostrandoci il loro mondo. Il procedimento in sé è già conoscenza: avere cura di qualcosa dal principio alla fine per utilizzarlo poi con rispetto, sapendo che è un dono prezioso, creare da soli uno strumento che cambia e si trasforma in base alla fantasia, ad un progetto in cui si è liberi di scegliere, certi che tutto sarà accolto con un sorriso. Ho sempre pensato che grazie all’arte si potessero scoprire cose eccezionali. Da un po’ di anni sperimento sull’argomento, in prima persona e con allievi di tutte le età. Ho in particolare il privilegio di lavorare con i bambini: curiosità pura, intuizioni illuminati, divertimento autentico e creatività esplosiva. •••> È uno spettacolo prezioso osservarli, condividere con loro momenti di apprendimento gioioso, ed è con questo spirito cari genitori che, ringraziandovi per la fiducia, vi chiedo di restare con noi. <••• Quanta bellezza abbiamo condiviso e quanto abbiamo imparato per i nostri piccoli e insieme a loro. Perché no, magari anche in pomeriggio in cui hanno giocato con i colori, ascoltato storie, aperto il loro cuoricino a nuove forme espressive mostrandoci il loro mondo. Questa volta vorrei dedicarvi un’esperienza decisamente controcorrente rispetto ai nostri tempi veloci e fagocitanti. Come nelle botteghe di un tempo, tra profumi e mussole e pestelli, i bambini saranno protagonisti del procedimento di estrazione e lavorazione del colore. Il procedimento in sé è già conoscenza: avere cura di qualcosa dal principio alla fine per utilizzarlo poi con rispetto, sapendo che è un dono prezioso, creare da soli uno strumento che cambia e si trasforma in base alla fantasia, ad un progetto in cui si è liberi di scegliere, certi che tutto sarà accolto con un sorriso. Golden Eyes FrankenCorps Earthenware Cone 6 Glazed Gilded I tried out some gold over glaze to see if it would work in class. I entered it into the NiHAA May Member exhibit Lush. They are so ridiculously Kitschy and nothing I ever thought I'd enjoy making but I do so I will. I think I like either black, red or white glaze. Stains, white, red, blue ... maybe add yellow and green.
