Not a bad way to spend a weekend... The Palm Event weekend had us going up to Palm Beach for two events, Friday night's Welcome Party at the Flagler Museum and the Main event at Mar-a-lago on Sunday. My date for the weekend? This elegant 1930 Pierce-Arrow Model B Dual-cowl Sport Phaeton. Driving this 94 year old car up & down A1A & through Palm Beach was amazing, a portal to a time long gone. Not everyone knows what a Pierce-Arrow is, but everyone who saw it knew it was something special. It grabbed attention all weekend on the road, at the Friday night party and on the show field. Even when cruising behind a Jaguar XJ220 or placed next to a SWB Deusenberg Model J, the old Pierce seemed to get the majority of the smiles, waves and admiration. She was so loved that we took home The Palm Event's "Most Elegant" award as proof. The term "hot-rod" doesn't really come to mind when you think about a Ferrari, but I think the term fits this car perfectly... 1968 was the last year of production for the 330-series cars. For GTC they made a few subtle visual changes and then just swapped the 4.0L Colombo V-12 and replaced with the new 365-series 4.4L Colombo unit. Only 168 examples of the 365 GTC were made from 1968 to 1970. Basically the same car with a bigger motor swapped in? Sounds like the hot-rod formula to me. I got to take this example on its first proper drive yesterday and it was GLORIOUS! I really like a 330GTC, I LOVE this car. 70-miles round trip, mostly highway, and not a single hiccup other than a weak charge from the alternator at idle when the cooling fan runs. Not only was the drive spectacular, but we had a great day at the @ferrariclubofamerica_palmbeach Concourso Palm Beach too. We took home 3 Platinum Awards and a "Best of" to top it all off. Another great weekend for the @atlasmotorcarsllc team! I just wish we had more footage of the drive up/back... In the world of vintage Ferraris, you can't just replace every part that fails... This is where experience, passion, and patience allow you to see through the problems to find/create solutions. Parts for low production, 55 year old Ferraris can't be found at your local parts store or dealer, and many aren't available at all. So, when I disassembled the column switch assembly on this 365 GTC and found excessive wear of hard parts and evidence of prior attempts at repair; I had to take a step back and look at the situation from new angles. After bouncing ideas off a coworker (with even more experience than myself), we came up with an elegant and relatively simple solution that saved the original switch assembly. I was able to return full electrical function and original feel to the assembly and stalks with no major modifications. Next up was the repair and restoration of the failing orignal wiper motor and the seized air horn pump... Timing belt service, water pump rebuild/repair, attend to a few minor leaks, light cleaning of engine/engine bay, clutch/flywheel inspection and 2 rebuilt axles.
