I wrote about surfing in Galveston for @texashighways. "At 49, I’ve never surfed, but I’m surfing-curious — a dangerous thing for me. Surfing is man vs. nature distilled to its essence, even if that man happens to be a woman. The first time the writer Jack London spotted a human on a surfboard, in the aquamarine waves of Waikiki, Hawaii, he was taken by the elegant mastery. 'Where but the moment before was only the wide desolation and invincible roar, is now a man, erect, full-statured,' he wrote in a story called 'Surfing: A Royal Sport' that would kick-start the American love affair with finding the perfect wave. This was 1911, and the idea of riding the water on a slender slice of wood was inconceivable to London, a swashbuckler who worked the Klondike Gold Rush and sailed the globe during an era when most Americans still toiled on farms. One More for the Road Pinto Canyon Road (Ranch Road 2810) winds and curves and rises and dips and rises and falls from Marfa to the tiny Mexican border town of Ruidosa fifty-two miles away. Once its two-lane blacktop eventually gives way to a rugged stretch of gravel, you’ll pass through terrain that could make you wonder if LAND OF THE LOST is actually fiction. I highly recommend tackling the rough patch of PCR in a high-ground-clearance vehicle (with a full tank of gas). The road is so lightly traveled, you may not encounter another human soul on the trip to the border, so be sure to take more water than you think you’ll need, and I highly recommend carrying some sort of satellite communication device (newer iPhones may include this feature). Marfa - Elizabeth Taylor Roadside attraction, murals honoring the 1956 movie, Giant, filmed in and around Marfa, can be found about 7 miles outside of Marfa, Texas. It seems a little silly to make the effort for a few billboards, but then again I also visited a fake Prada store located even further. Don’t overthink it, go and take a look, make a selfie, check a box, or just give it a smile. Why not? Remember you can only do something a first time, once. A few days ago, someone asked me what inspires my photography. The truth? I have no idea. I just see something I like, then visualize the best way to capture it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The real question is what inspires me to hit the open road and search for these places. The answer is I'm an introverted extrovert, or more to the point - an introvert who can convincingly mimic an extrovert for limited periods of time. God has blessed me with an awesome family and some incredible friends, but unlike a true extrovert, I can only turn it on for the crowd for just so long before I need to recharge. And my recharge time is alone time on the open road. I completely relate to the sentiment expressed by this lonely, abandoned gas station in the ghost town of Lobo, Texas. At the waterfall Behind the scenes and then one of the long exposure images. A short Reel of the waterfall I had set up for a RAV4 image. The keen eyed will see the road and low water crossing. Recent rains turned a rock ledge into a shallow pool that worked perfectly for a shot. I believe these are a type of Cumulonimbus clouds. If you know clouds and my identification is in error, I don't mind being educated. I was out in the Texas Hill Country making photographs for one of the books I'm working on. According to two weather apps, it was supposed to be a cloudless afternoon and evening, and it was, for the most part. Driving down this back country county road, the sunset was starting to set at my 2 o'clock. A huge bank of great looking clouds had developed to my left. Of course, since I was on a two lane country road, there was no place to pull over with an unobstructed view of the sky. I hit 281 and drove about 20 miles before I found this spot to stop.
