Contagion: 📀📀📀📀📀📀📀 (7/10 discs) The film is like the disease it shows, fast moving, shocking, and taking names. The first ten minutes shakes you to your core. A pre covid movie that makes you feel right back in the pandemic. ‘Contagion’ is slick, stylish, and at its core, shows we don’t have it all together in fiction that eerily matches some moment is fact that happened after the release of this movie. Obviously a slightly silly take but ironically this was ahead of its time in the guesses with internet and blogging that causes hysteria without facts. I can’t even begin to start listing the cast but it’s an understatement to say it’s loaded with people you know. Directed by Steven Soderberg and written by Scott Burns, this tandem made several films together in a short period of time. I think this one highlights both of their best attributes. Telling one story from multiple different prospective without losing its main idea. To many, remakes are a sign of laziness on the part of studios, opting to lean-in on what audiences know or have a relationship with rather than taking a chance on something new. Every now and then, however, magic happens and the newer version is able to sit right next to the original as its own thing. This describes director Steven Soderbergh (“Out of Sight”) and writer Ted Griffin’s (“Matchstick Men”) “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), a remake/adaptation of the 1960 version featuring the Rat Pack. The 2001 version not only captured the essence and energy of the prior film, it stole audience’s hearts with its cleverness and charm. 영화 우리가 꿈꾸는 기적 : 인빅터스(Invictus) - 위대한 영혼, 넬슨 만델라의 향기에 흠뻑 취해 며칠을 보냈다. 통찰력과 인품을 겸비한 불굴의 리더쉽이 이루어낸 엄청난 성취에 취해.. 지난주 목요일 코펜하겐을 출발, 헬싱키를 거쳐 금요일 귀국했다. 기약 없이 계속되는 러시아 - 우크라이나 전쟁으로 비행기가 러시아 상공을 통과할 수 없어 헬싱키 - 인천 구간 비행시간은 무려 12시간에 육박한다. 잠자는 시간 외에는 아무래도 주로 영화를 보게 된다. 한 편만 보고 쉴까 하다가 하나 더 보자 해서 큰 기대는 없이 선택했던 게 INVICTUS(우리가 꿈꾸는 기적 : 인빅터스)였다. ’넬슨 만델라가 남아프리카공화국 럭비팀 주장과 힘을 합친 방법‘이라는 소개 문구로 보아 실화 소재의 영화겠지 정도로만 생각했다. 그런데 영화가 시작되고 불과 10여분이 지났을 무렵부터 나는 앉은 자세를 바로 잡고 몰입되어 갔다. 모건 프리먼(Morgan Freeman)이 연기하는 넬슨 만델라라는 인물의 캐릭터에 깊이 매료되기 시작했던 것이다. ’야아.. 만델라가 이 정도로 매혹적인 인품의 인물이었어??‘하는 생각에 영화 시작 20여분이 지나서는 일시정지 버튼을 누르고 휴대폰을 집어 들었다. 잦은 비행 덕분에 나는 인터넷 무료 접속이 언제든 가능해 바로 검색이 가능했기에.. 넬슨 만델라, 럭비, 그리고 Invictus 등을 키워드로 검색해 보니 이 영화는 만델라가 대통령에 당선된 1994년부터 1995년까지의 약 일년 사이에 일어난 실제의 역사적 사실을 거의 그대로 재현한 것이라고 했다. 당시 자타공인 최약체의 남아공 럭비대표팀이 95년 럭비 월드컵에서 우승할 수 있다고, 그리고 그 우승이라는 목표를 이루어 가는 과정을 통해 극심했던 남아공의 흑백갈등을 해소할 수 있다고 생각이라도 해본 사람은 만델라를 제외하고는 단 한 사람도 없었다. 그런데 그는 시대의 흐름을 꿰뚫어 보는 탁월한 통찰력과 때론 부드럽게, 때론 매우 사려 깊게 그리고 때론 아주 단호하게 행동하며 보여준 놀라운 리더쉽으로 그 상상조차 할 수 없었던 일을 이루어 냈던 것이다. 귀국하고 나서도 나는 며칠을 틈틈이 이런저런 자료들을 구해 읽으며 만델라에 푹 빠져 지냈다. 인터넷에서 다시 구매해서 이 영화를 두 번이나 더 봤는데도 처음 봤을 때와 똑같은 감동을 느끼는 신기한 경험도 했다. 물론 그 또한 사람이니 어찌 완벽할 수야 있었겠으며 보는 사람의 입장에 따라 다른 평가는 얼마든지 가능하겠지만 그에 상관 없이 깊이 존경해 마지 않을 이유를 나로서는 찾지 못하겠다. 아쉽게도 이 영화는 개봉후 국내에서는 10만명 남짓 만이 관람한 것으로 나오지만 OTT를 통해서는 제법 많은 사람들이 본 모양이다. 인빅터스(Invictus)는 ’굴하지 않는‘이라는 뜻의 라틴어라는데 왜 영화의 제목이 그렇게 정해졌는지는 영화를 보다 보면 자연스럽게 확인할 수 있다. 주인공 만델라도 그렇지만 제작자이자 감독인 클린트 이스트우드가 넬슨을 직접 만나 영화에 대한 조언을 구했을 때 주인공을 맡을 사람은 지구상에 딱 한 사람 모건 프리먼 밖에 없다고 했다는 재미난 일화도 전해진다. 실제로 프리먼의 만델라 연기는 너무나도 완벽해 프리먼의 비서조차 그를 종종 만델라로 착각했을 정도였다고 ㅎㅎ 맷 데이먼의 연기 또한 일품이었다. 위대한 영혼으로부터의 선한 영향에 감동을 받고 영감과 에너지를 얻어 낙관적 삶의 자세를 되찾고 싶은 모든 분들께 강추하고 싶은 영화다. #노르딕파크 #nordicpark #인빅터스 #영화인빅터스 #우리가꿈꾸는기적인비터스 #만델라 #넬슨만델라 #모건프리먼 #맷데이먼 #클린트이스트우드 #럭비월드컵 #남아공럭비월드컵 #1995럭비월드컵 #1995럭비월드컵남아프리카공화국 #1995남아공럭비월드컵 #윌리엄어니스트헨리 #프랑수아피나르 #Invictus #Mandela #NelsonMandela #MorganFreeman #MattDamon #ClintEeastwood #WilliamEenestHenley #1995RugbyWorldcup #FrancoisPienaar #PlayingtheEnemy #JohnCarlin #Movieinvictus #ClintEastwoodInvictus

The third and final photo shows Damon and Affleck on set discussing the script with director Doug Liman.Though Matt Damon is better known for collaborations with his brother Ben, The Instigators marks the latest onscreen team-up between Damon and Casey Affleck, who first starred together in the Boston-set Good Will Hunting in 1997. Over the years, the two have also starred together in Gerry, the Ocean’s trilogy, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer. The upcoming crime thriller does not only bring the two Bostonians back together, but it also reunites Damon with director Doug Liman for the first time since The Bourne Identity in 2002.Casey Affleck, who co-wrote the film, says The Instigators is a buddy action comedy inspired by the likes of Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. According to the official synopsis, the film follows a distressed father, Rory, who reluctantly joins forces with a former convict, Cobby, to rob a corrupt politician. As expected, the heist goes horribly wrong and the mismatched duo finds themselves in a frenzy of disorder, pursued not only by the police, but backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. During their chaotic escape, they somehow persuade Rory’s therapist to join them.

DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS After the release of The Tragedy of Macbeth, everyone was curious to see what the other Coen brother had up his sleeve when he decided to come back to making movies with his first ever solo project, and the generally mixed reception of this film wasn’t quite enough to keep me from wanting to check it out. What’s so baffling about Drive-Away Dolls is just how amateurish everything about it feels, as Ethan Coen’s attempt at recreating the feel of his tried-&-true regional crime comedies with some influences from Russ Meyer and Doris Wishman for good measure ended up falling flat due to the script being littered with underdeveloped characters, juvenile comedy, overwritten dialogue, and a general lack of focus. Ethan Coen’s directing somehow felt more like the work of a first-timer rather than someone who’s been in the industry for over 40 years, with the flat lighting, bad compositions, and straight-to-video digital textures making every single shot in Drive-Away Dolls look like a production still, and the iMovie-grade scene transitions managed to make them even worse. Along with the messy and predictable screenplay and bewilderingly clumsy filmmaking, one of the most jarring elements of Drive-Away Dolls would be its inclusion of psychedelic dream sequences, and not only did they look cheap and feel completely at odds with the rest of the movie, but having them only vaguely pay off towards the end made me wonder what the point was for even having them in the first place. Aside from me appreciate how unapologetically sapphic this movie was, the only element of Drive-Away Dolls that I genuinely enjoyed was Margaret Qualley’s performance as the free-spirited Texan Jamie, because while the rest of the cast ranges from being serviceable to underwhelming (including some especially contrived cameos), she was at least somewhat entertaining in her role. Other than that, though, I was really disappointed by Drive-Away Dolls on practically every level, and I’m just glad that the Coen Brothers are reportedly working together again after this. OVERALL RATING: 3/10
