Last day in Fort Kochi before flying home and I thought I'd spend an hour in the Dutch Palace in Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, a very popular visitor destination run by the government with entry a very reasonable 5 rupees, so affordable to all. It hadn't changed much in the ten years since I last visited...I think the way the artifacts are displayed has had an upgrade. More information as well about the way of life and dress especially of members of the Royal House of Cochin. Fascinating how the two piece set saree developed from the mundu and top that ladies of the court adopted in the 19thC in response to British Victorian prudishness surrounding the long mundu that was the only garment worn by court ladies, worn wrapped around the body from the chest to the floor. prior to the British presence in Kerala. I loved the royal men's headgear displayed in one room from the 18thC...gave a real idea of what it must have looked like on a member of the royal court of the time. It's a lovely building from the 17thC, built by the Portuguese for the Rajah of Cochin as a gift for allowing them full trading rights in Cochin and as an ally against the enemy of Cochin, the Zamorin of Calicut, another royal house, further up the coast... It's crowning glory are wonderful Kerala style murals on the interior walls, very faded, from the 17thC of the Hindu epics. No photography allowed... The first photo is a modern Kerala style wall mural depicting the meeting of Vasco to Gama possibly, or another Portuguese trading expedition leader, meeting the the Rajah of Cochin in the 17thC to discuss trading in the spices that Kerala had in abundance and which the Portuguese had travelled so far to trade in. The eastern portion was known as the "The Cherry of Mathan" - Mattanchery and the western was Fort Cochi. The church at Mattanchery dedicated to Our Lady of Life was used by the Catholics other Christians build a separate church. In spite of this scandous events that followed later on, the majority of St. Thomas Christians who joined the Catholic Church, remained faithful in their obedience to the Roman Pontiff. The Church of Our Lady of Life and Coonan Cross always remained with the Latin Christians. As the priest of these former St. Thomas Christians did not have any proper training in Catholic Doctrine and Latin liturgy. The Portuguese started in Cochin and Crangannore. The Mattancherry Palace or Dutch Palace Kochi. . Vascodagama landed in Kerala in 1498. The Cochin rulers welcome the Portuguese. They started their trade and building factories. However they continued with their tricks and attack and plundered nearby villages and temples. In order to soothe the Cochin rulers, the Portuguese constructed a palace in 1545. The Cochin rulers built a temple in their own premises defying sensibilities of the Portuguese and provided patronage near their palace to Jewish community. So while being vassals they tried to defy them. The travancore ruler Marthanda Verma defeated the Dutch in 1741. The English then defeated French in South near Madras & in 1757 defeated the Nawab of Bengal establishing their hold over all important coastal cities of India. Mumbai, Calcutta, Madras. I had joked of Marthanda Verma had not defeated the Dutch we all would be speaking Dutch and not English 😄. The palace its self is combination of Kerala and European architecture. The building itself is Kerala, but the windows are sort of European. Inside our murals from Ramayana somewhat like Ajanta, but from 17th century and clicking them is not allowed.
